The aim of this study is to identify high school student's understanding of average concept and the reasoning types they appeal to solve average problems. The case study approach was used in this study and the participants were selected by purposeful sampling. The participants consisted of five 9th grade and four 10th grade students, studying at a high school in Istanbul. In order to identify student's understanding of average, a test consisting of 5 open-ended problems were used and semi-structured interviews were held with each of the students. The data were analyzed by thematic analysis approach. For data analysis, framework proposed by Mokros and Russel (1995) was used to determine student's understanding of average and Lithner's (2008) framework was used to reveal their reasoning types. Results showed that students mostly understood average as mathematical point of balance. Creative mathematically founded reasoning and algorithmic reasoning was used the most. Creative reasoning is effective in reaching the right answer. In solutions where creative reasoning is used, students generally also have the idea of representativeness. The type of problem influences the reasoning process. Inadequacy of student's prior mathematics knowledge hinders both their understanding of the average and their reasoning skills.

This study was conducted to explore the manager’s perception towards Generation Y employees particularly in the IT industry in Selangor. A case study approach was adopted in which data was obtained through semi-structured interviews. Purposive sampling technique was used and a total of eight (8) informants participated and interviewed. The data obtained from the interview were qualitatively analyzed. Data analysis was conducted by adopting a content analysis framework in which obtained data were divided into four (4) phases including condensation, code, category and inference and summarize. The findings showed majority of the managers perceived that openness to experience, conscientious and extraversion’ are the most common personalities among Generation Y employees. Besides that, the findings also revealed that in terms of work ethics, Generation Y employees are perceived as accountable of own’s actions, respect authority, transparency and loyal. The result of this study implicates the organization in terms of attrition and turnover rate among Generation Y employees and organizational branding. The result of this study provided some recommendations to HR practitioners and organizations in managing and handling at the workplace.   Keywords: Generation Y; Managers; Personalities; Work ethics; Work values

A inclusão escolar compreende o convívio com as diferenças que contemple a subjetividade, a identidade, embora no coletivo da sala de aula. Pressupõe repensar as ações éticas nas escolas, por meio da adoção de estratégias de ensino condiz com a pluralidade educacional. Diante disso, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo principal analisar como os professores do ensino regular e do atendimento educacional especializado estão viabilizando o processo de inclusão de alunos com deficiência visual (cegueira e baixa visão) no ensino médio em São Luís-MA. Trata-se de uma pesquisa quanti-qualitativa, a partir de estudo de caso em uma escola pública de ensino ludovicense. Os participantes desta pesquisa foram dois grupos de professores: oito professores do ensino regular e dois professores do atendimento educacional especializado que trabalhavam no ensino médio na referida escola, com os quais foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas. Os dados obtidos pelas entrevistas foram analisados com base na técnica da análise de conteúdo. Os resultados dessa análise revelaram que as dificuldades e barreiras encontradas na prática cotidiana têm cerceado a garantia do direito a uma educação inclusiva plena para os alunos com deficiência visual. No entanto, importante destacar o reconhecimento da existência de esforços depreendidos pelos professores entrevistados que demonstraram avanços nas práticas de educação inclusiva.Palavras-chave: Inclusão escolar. It presupposes rethinking the ethical actions in schools, through the adoption of educational strategies that are consistent with educational plurality. Therefore, this research has as main objective to analyze how teachers of regular education and specialized educational service are enabling the process of inclusion of students with visual impairment (blindness and low vision) in high school in São Luís-Ma. This is a quantitative-qualitative research, based on a case study in a public Ludwig-of-State school. The participants of this research were two groups of teachers: eight regular teachers and two teachers of specialized educational services who worked in high school at the referred school, with whom semi-structured interviews were conducted. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed based on the technique of content analysis. The results of this analysis revealed that the difficulties and barriers encountered in everyday practice have curtailed the guarantee of the right to full inclusive education for students with visual impairment. However, it is important to highlight the recognition of the eff orts made by the teachers interviewed who demonstrated advances in inclusive education practices.Keywords: School inclusion. Sus participantes fueron dos grupos de profesores: ocho profesores de la enseñanza regular y dos profesores de atención educacional especializada que actúan en la enseñanza media del centro educativo, con quienes se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas. Los datos obtenidos a través de las entrevistas se analizaron con base en la técnica de análisis de contenido. Los resultados de ese análisis revelaron que las dificultades y las barreras encontradas en la práctica cotidiana han aminorado la garantía del derecho a una educación inclusiva plena para los alumnos con deficiencia visual. Sin embargo, es importante destacar el reconocimiento de la existencia de esfuerzos logrados por los profesores entrevistados que demostraron avances en las prácticas de educación inclusiva.Palabras clave: Inclusión escolar. Covid-19 has had a significant impact on the disruption of the global economic sector, including for startup businesses. This encourages entrepreneurs to carry out a continuous innovation process to become more ambidextrous and continue to innovate in an effort to futureproof their business. The paper aims to provide a business resilience framework by exploring capability (innovation ambidexterity, dynamic capability, and technology capability), behavior (agile leadership), and knowledge (knowledge stock) in startup businesses. This study uses a literature review synthesis to gain a greater understanding of startup resilience and its implementation. This study also uses a case study approach in building a framework by obtaining data from semi-structured interviews with three startups owners in Indonesia. This preliminary research has identified four propositions that will be used to develop questionnaires and data collection instruments. Thus, this study provides new insights on how startups can overcome contradictory pressures for business resilience in anticipating, dealing with, and emerging from business turbulence due to the Covid-19 pandemic by considering the factors proposed in this study. The implications and recommendations of this study are also discussed in detail.

PurposeThis paper aims to focus on how a public policy designed to address a social problem ultimately became the place brand.Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses a qualitative case study approach focusing on the city of Medellín, Colombia. It draws from fieldwork conducted in Medellín over 2014 and 2015, including semi-structured interviews with an array of local stakeholders.FindingsThe paper concludes that local governments should be aware that the policymaking process can become part of their branding. It also shows the importance of the continual involvement of stakeholders in the place brand process to ensure it is a sustainable brand.Originality/valueThere are limited studies which focus on how a public policy designed to address a social problem ultimately becomes the place brand. This paper shows how a public policy, social urbanism, became the branding of Medellín.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine why and how municipal managers and CEOs for municipally owned companies use the environmental performance indicators. Design/methodology/approach A case study approach as a research design was used. In total, 18 semi-structured interviews were conducted among managers for administrative departments and municipal company CEOs. Findings This study found that the environmental performance indicators are used by department managers mainly for resource allocation, control and for teaching the employees. The CEOs of the municipal companies use the environmental indicators for communicating with external stakeholders and see the indicators primarily as marketing tools. The main reason why the environmental performance indicators are used in the municipality can be the strong demand from the local politicians to push the “green agenda,” and therefore the managers have to comply. Research limitations/implications As in any case study, generalizations from the research should be made with care, but since this is only one municipality, further research is needed to find additional evidence. Practical implications The findings of this study have a number of implications for future practice, and it is worth mentioning that clear guidelines for how the information could be made more useful for managers at the managerial level in Växjö municipality (VM) are requested for both the municipal managers and the CEOs. Social implications Overall, this study strengthens the idea that environmental performance indicators could be used to a larger extent for communicating with external stakeholders both for municipal departments and companies. Originality/value The research adds to the literature by examining different patterns of using environmental performance indicators in a unique setting – in VM, which is called “the greenest city in Europe” and is one of the “pioneers” in environmental work and extensively uses performance indicators.

Environmental degradation and socioeconomic dilemma continue to affect agricultural productivity in the Niger Delta of Nigeria. Several works of literature confirm the high level of pollution and contamination of land and water as a result of over 50 years of oil production in the region. The effects of environmental pollution continue to aggravate the hardship of the local people, which generates development friction, threaten oil operation, and mutually contrive relational efforts, by so invoking mistrust between oil companies and the host communities. Sustainability programs of oil companies often provide the channel to engage and promote community relations from which projects are conceived and executed. Despite sustainability efforts of oil companies, the region continues to experience oil spills and environmental degradation.Hence, the current research explores the sustainability efforts of a multinational oil company to establish whether the company’s leadership makes environmental considerations and to identify possible corrections that could be adopted to achieve sustainable value. For this purpose, the paper employed a single case study approach using open-ended interview sessions in collecting data. Research data were gathered from a sample of 20 experienced sustainability practitioners of the oil company, partnering nonprofit organizations, and community leaders through face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Data were segmented and categorized. The data analysis process revealed several themes regarding the challenges and shortfalls of sustainability programs in the region. The evidence found suggests that implementing a transparent and inclusive sustainability management system is essential to enable a systems view in contemplating sustainability programs. In so doing, oil MNCs leaders could enable effective environmental consideration in their sustainability programs to help reinvigorate productive agriculture and ensure continuing oil operation.

Amil zaka in zaka institutions has the right as one of eight ashnaf. Their rights are usually used by zaka institutions as operational cost. However, not all of the intitutions which manage zaka take amil’s right, one of them is Yayasan Nurul Hayat. This institution does not take amil’s right and it is independent in its operational cost. To support this operational cost, Yayasan Nurul Hayat establish business unit with utilize its profit.This study aimed to discover the capability of business unit in supporting operational cost of Yayasan Nurul Hayat. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive case study method. The selections of informant are using purposive sampling method. Data collection was conducted by semi-structured interviews and documentation. This data is analyzed using descriptive method.The result of this study shows that Yayasan Nurul Hayat Employments’ Salary is taken from business unit’s profit. It is also used to give bonus for employments and grow the business unit of Yayasan Nurul Hayat up. From the result of this study, it can be concluded that the business unit which is developed has great capability to support operational cost of Yayasan Nurul Hayat.

<p>Portfolio learning has been utilised in education for many years and a natural development in today's digital environment has been the move from paper to electronic portfolios (e-portfolios). The development of e-portfolios in New Zealand has also been driven by two forces- the emerging view that e-portfolios can be an effective way to support constructivist approaches to learning and help develop students into 'lifelong learners' ; and the beliefs about today's digital environment and the way in which students should and do operate within this. In many ways, e-portfolio research is a relatively young field of study and much of the research that has been conducted has occurred in the tertiary environment and related to the perceptions of the instructor or technologist. In an attempt to add depth to current e-portfolio research, this study made use of a mixed-methods, descriptive case study approach in order to focus on the perceptions of a group of high school students and the way in which they experienced using the e-portfolio application MyPortfolio for the first time. Key findings of this study focus on the way in which students experienced using MyPortfolio and the fact that although it is often claimed that e-portfolio tools can be effective in helping developing reflective thinking in students, overall, the students in this study predominately saw MyPortfolio as a tool to organise and process knowledge rather than something that could help them to engage in 'deep learning'. The experiences and perceptions of the students in this study also challenged ideas about how much students want to use ICT within the school environment and this study suggests that increased use of ICT can lead to students missing the social interaction that usually occurs within the classroom. In a similar vein, the students in this study also challenged the idea of the 'digital native' and their experiences suggest that, as with any area of learning, students' skills with using ICT varied greatly. The way that the students in this study made use of MyPortfolio also demonstrates the fact that although e-portfolio tools such as MyPortfolio offer students the opportunity to engage in reflective learning, they do not necessarily undertake this naturally. Finally, the findings of this study highlight the role of the teacher in supporting effective use of ICT for learning.</p>

This case study describes processes in an urban high school, which contribute to excellence in urban pedagogy, and investigates teachers’ and educational leaders’ perceptions of the factors influencing their commitment to school success. Six themes related to excellence in urban pedagogy were identified. Data in the form of semi-structured interviews, observations, and document review de scribe a school in which the leadership strives to develop human capability at all levels through empowerment and shared decision-making. The study indicates that students’ achievement is a collective responsibility and strong instructional leadership is a key for success in urban schools. More studies may be needed to show how contextual experience of teachers and teacher’s self-efficacy are related.

The purpose of this research is (1) analyze student’s concept in answering the association test, (2) analyze the concept of understanding  relationship  to  answer  the test depends on the student’s school origin.The method used in this research is qualitative with case study approach. In clustering sampling technique the subject was used in this research is 6 students, shared  in  3  groups.  They  are  2  students come from public vocational school, 2 students come from public senior high school and 2 students come from private senior high school and vocational school. Data was collected through test and interview.   Data   analysis   used   in   this research refers to Milles and Huberman in Moellong’s book; they are data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The result showed that the student’s understanding is various enough in answering the  set  test.  Depending on  the first subject analysis (S1) who came from private school, he did not understand about the concept of set. The second subject analysis (S2) and the third subject analysis (S3)  who  came  from  public  school,  they had understood. But, they need to be careful and patient to avoid the mistakes. The data which  had  gained from deeply interview, showed that the subject analysis (S1), (S2) and (S3) were able to indicate the relationship of school origin with the student’s concept of understanding within answering the set test.
