AbstractScientific information on the impact of the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) on the health of pregnant women, fetuses and newborns is considered of limited confidence, lacking good-quality evidence, and drawing biased conclusions. As a matter of fact, the initial impressions that the evolution of COVID-19 was no different between pregnant and non-pregnant women, and that SARS-CoV-2 was not vertically transmitted, are confronted by the documentation of worsening of the disease during pregnancy, poor obstetric outcomes, and the possibility of vertical transmission. The present article aims to compile the data available on the association of COVID-19 and reproductive events, from conception to birth.

There are now a number of reports in the literature that transposed letter (TL) priming effects emerge when two consonants are transposed (e.g., caniso-CASINO) but not when two vowels are transposed (e.g., cinaso-CASINO). In the present article, four masked priming lexical decision experiments, two in Italian and two in English, are reported in which TL priming effects involving the transposition of two adjacent consonants (e.g., atnenna-ANTENNA) were contrasted with those involving the transposition of a vowel and an adjacent consonant (e.g., anetnna-ANTENNA), a contrast not directly examined in the previous literature. In none of the experiments was there any indication that the priming effects were different sizes for the two types of transpositions, including Experiment 4 in which a sandwich priming paradigm was used. These results support the assumption of most orthographic coding models that the consonant–vowel status of the letters is not relevant to the nature of the orthographic code. The question of how to reconcile these results with other TL manipulations investigating vowel versus consonant transpositions is discussed.

The Pew Internet and American Life Project (Pew/Internet; Lenhart, Horrigan, Rainie et al., 2003) reports 42 percent of Americans say they do not use the Internet, with 24 percent being truly off-line with no direct or indirect experience with the Internet. However, these percentages represent averages and don’t pertain uniformly across all subpopulations. Pew/Internet (Fox, 2005) reports Americans age 65 and older, African-Americans, and those with less education lag behind others in Internet usage. The present article examines the impact of these differences on social equity in terms of receiving fair, just, and equitable treatment by the political system regarding public policies and services.

Innovative technologies are being increasingly used on the insurance market, as well. However, while analyzing and assessing their impact on the market what must be taken into account are not only distributors of insurance services, but also institutions performing regulatory and supervisory tasks, and perhaps above all, customers and consumers. The present article seeks to analyze the conditions, benefits and barriers associated with the application of innovative technologies with special regard to big data analytics, artificial intelligence and the possibility of absorption of innovative products and services by their customers. It has been emphasized that while evaluating the suitability of innovative technologies for the insurance market it is vital to confront product offers provided by insurance undertakings and intermediaries with the expectations, needs and skills of the purchasers of these products.

205 Background: We have systematically been incorporating several safety initiatives (based on process-engineering and Lean methodologies) into our academic radiation oncology clinic. We herein quantify the impact of these initiatives on prospectively collected, clinically meaningful metrics. Methods: The data from five quality improvement initiatives are presented. For each, data was collected prospectively: operational metrics recorded before and after implementation of the initiative were compared using descriptive statistics and unpaired student t-test. Each initiative focused on a specific safety/process concern in our clinic. Results: 1) Workload levels for nurses assisting with brachytherapy were too high (NASA task load index scores >55-60, suggesting, “overwork”). Changes in work flow and procedure room layout reduced workload scores to more acceptable limits (<55). 2) The rate of treatment therapists being interrupted was reduced from a mean of 4 (range 1-11) times per patient treatment to a mean < 1 (range 0-3, p<0.001) after implementing standards for electronic communication and placement of monitors informing patients and staff of the treatment machine status (e.g., delayed, on time). 3) The rates of replans by dosimetrists was reduced from 11% in 2010 to 6% in 2011 though a more systematic pre-treatment peer review process. 4) Standardizing nursing/resident functions reduced patient wait times by ≈ 45% (14 min). 5) Standardizing pre-simulation instructions from the physician within the EMR reduced the number of patients experiencing delays on the simulator (from approximatley >50% to <10%). Conclusions: Process engineering and Lean methodologies can be successfully applied in an academic radiation oncology department to yield measurable improvements in operations likely improving quality/safety.

Pantetheinase is an ubiquitous enzyme which hydrolyses D-pantetheine into cysteamine and pantothenate (vitamin B5) on the dissimilative pathway of CoA. Pantetheinase isoforms are encoded by the Vnn (vanin) genes and Vnn1 is the predominant tissue isoform in mice and humans. In the present article, we review the results showing the regulation of Vnn1 expression during developmental, repair and inflammatory situations and the impact of a Vnn1 deficiency in mouse models of pathologies. We document the involvement of the Vnn1 pantetheinase in situations of increased tissue needs and propose that Vnn1 through recycling of pantothenate and release of cysteamine in tissues participates in the adaptive response of the tissue to stress.

Since Hamas won the Palestinian legislative elections in January 2006, its political positions as presented in the Western media hark back to its 1988 charter, with almost no reference to its considerable evolution under the impact of political developments. The present article analyzes (with long verbatim extracts) three recent key Hamas documents: its fall 2005 electoral platform, its draft program for a coalition government, and its cabinet platform as presented on 27 March 2006. Analysis of the documents reveals not only a strong programmatic and, indeed, state building emphasis, but also considerable nuance in its positions with regard to resistance and a two-state solution. The article pays particular attention to the sectarian content of the documents, finding a progressive de-emphasis on religion in the three.

ABSTRACT Probiotics are live micro-organisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer health benefits upon the host. Although a lot of work has been done regarding the effects of probiotic applications on systemic health particularly gastro-intestinal, the impact of probiotics on oral health is relatively new with lots of research going on; the area of probiotics and periodontal disease is still in its infancy. The present article summarizes the role of probiotics in periodontal health and disease and its effectiveness in periodontal therapy.

The article is devoted to the reconstruction of the biography of Isai Pavlovich Schmidt, a Professor of History, propagandist and the head of the flight on the route Moscow – Beijing (1925). The life and work of I. P. Schmidt (1896–1975) have already been the object of studies in modern historiography. However, the complex of new sources, which were available to the authors of the present article, made it possible to revisit some facts of the professor's biography, introducing the necessary additions and clarifications. The purpose of the study is the reconstruction of the biography of I. P. Schmidt in the context of the Soviet history with a focus on the impact of the anti-cosmopolitan campaign in the USSR on the professional career and further life of the professor. As a result of the analysis, the authors identified the main stages of the biography of I. P. Schmidt and noted the peculiar features of his worldview. The obtained results of the study led the authors to the conclusion that events of the anti-cosmopolitan campaign had resulted in the beginning of a new stage in the I. P. Schmidt’s biography – his research and pedagogical activities in Uzbekistan and Siberia. The study determines peculiarities of the activities and life of the “cosmopolitan” historian in the country’s periphery. This article is intended for teachers and university students, researchers as well as local historians.

Early childhood autism, or autism spectrum disorders, is an extremely heterogeneous group of conditions that share similar symptoms of dysontogenesis. The most significant comorbidity in patients with autism is epilepsy, which is still associated with a variety of controversies. The present article covers the most controversial aspects of comorbidity between autism and epilepsy, including the impact of psychopharmacotherapy on the risk of epilepsy, clinical significance of epileptiform activity on the electroencephalogram in patients without epilepsy, and criteria for and prevalence of autistic epileptiform regression syndrome. We found that there is still a lack of reliable evidence for the majority of issues related to the combination of autism and epilepsy. We emphasize the need for further studies. We also provide a detailed description of the history, criteria, prevalence, and clinical examples of autistic epileptiform regression syndrome.
