Reports on our latest extractions of parton distribution functions of the nucleon are given. First an overview of the recent JR14 upgrade of our unpolarized PDFs, including NNLO determinations of the strong coupling constant and a discussion of the role of the input scale in parton distribution analysis. In the second part of the talk recent results on the determination of spin-dependent PDFs from the JAM collaboration are reported, including a careful treatment of hadronic and nuclear corrections, as well as reports on the impact of present and future data in our understanding of the spin of the nucleon.

Aggressive behavior in dementia often has a severe impact on the quality of life of the patient and the caregivers, and is therefore important to handle. The strategy of treatment should be broad. Nonpharmacological interventions, including environmental adjustments and supporting and training the caregivers, should always be considered. Pharmacological treatment of aggressive behavior in patients with dementia often includes the use of neuroleptics. The atypical compounds clozapine, risperidone, and olanzapine have been shown to have an effect on aggressive behavior at low dosage with limited extrapyramidal side effects. The anticonvulsants carbamazepine and sodium valproate are further alternatives. In treatment-resistant cases, buspirone or lithium may be tried, although the effect of these substances on aggressive behavior in dementia has not been well established. In the end, however, a considerable degree of aggressive behavior sometimes remains after careful treatment trials, particularly in patients with severe aggressive behavior. In addition, treatment is sometimes limited by side effects.

The article considers the works of a contemporary writer, winner of the Yasnaya Polyana 2016, N. Abgaryan in the context of the thinning borderline between mass and non-mass literature. Along with trying to make her readers laugh or shed a sympathetic tear (That Broad That’s Just Moved In [Ponaekhavshaya], 2011), Abgaryan has another agenda of showing the daily life of modern Armenia and its tragic history (People Who Are Always with Me [Lyudi, kotorie vsegda so mnoy], 2014), and insisting on a careful treatment of the single individual, of their past and future. The author argues that, after epitomizing the worst taste in the period between the 20th and the 21st centuries, mass literature has moved on to show a dramatic improvement of quality in the 2010s, as evidenced in N. Abgaryan’s works.

Implant rehabilitation is a successful treatment modality for the replacement of missing teeth, but careful treatment planning, restoratively-driven implant placement and individualized maintenance are prerequisites for success in order to control and minimize technical and biologic complications. The first part of the series focused on new patient assessment and pre-operative planning. The second part of the series will discuss the surgical and prosthodontic considerations and maintenance of implant-supported restorations. CPD/Clinical Relevance: To provide the dental practitioner with an evidence-based overview regarding treatment planning, surgical and prosthodontic considerations and maintenance of implant-supported restorations.

ABSTRACT The class of ultra-hot Jupiters comprises giant exoplanets undergoing intense irradiation from their host stars. They have proved to be a particularly interesting population for their orbital and atmospheric properties. One such planet, WASP-121b, is in a highly misaligned orbit close to its Roche limit, and its atmosphere exhibits a thermal inversion. These properties make WASP-121b an interesting target for additional atmospheric characterization. In this paper, we present analyses of archival high-resolution optical spectra obtained during transits of WASP-121b. We model the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect and the Centre-to-Limb Variation and find that they do not significantly affect the transmission spectrum in this case. However, we discuss scenarios where these effects warrant more careful treatment by modelling the WASP-121 system and varying its properties. We report a new detection of atmospheric absorption from H α in the planet with a transit depth of $1.87\pm 0.11{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. We further confirm a previous detection of the Na i doublet, and report a new detection of Fe i via cross-correlation with a model template. We attribute the H α absorption to an extended Hydrogen atmosphere, potentially undergoing escape, and the Fe i to equilibrium chemistry at the planetary photosphere. These detections help to constrain the composition and chemical processes in the atmosphere of WASP-121b.

AbstractWD+AGB star systems have been suggested as an alternative way for producing type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), known as the core-degenerate (CD) scenario. In the CD scenario, SNe Ia are produced at the final phase during the evolution of common-envelope through a merger between a carbon-oxygen (CO) WD and the CO core of an AGB secondary. However, the rates of SNe Ia from this scenario are still uncertain. In this work, I carried out a detailed investigation on the CD scenario based on a binary population synthesis approach. I found that the Galactic rates of SNe Ia from this scenario are not more than 20% of total SNe Ia due to more careful treatment of mass transfer, and that their delay times are in the range of ∼90 − 2500 Myr, mainly contributing to the observed SNe Ia with short and intermediate delay times.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to discuss the extent to which allowing for individuals to be indifferent among alternatives may alter the qualitative results that are obtained in social choice theory when domain restrictions are defined on profiles of linear orders. The general message is that indifferences require attention and careful treatment, because the translation of results from a world without indifferences to another where agents may be indifferent among some alternatives is not always a straightforward exercise. But the warning is not one-directional: sometimes indifferences complicate the statement of results, but preserve their essential message. Sometimes, they help to create domains where some rules work better than in the presence of linear orders. In other cases, however, their presence destroys the positive results that would apply in their absence. I provide examples of these three situations.

The importance of the nucleon Fermi motion in π–nucleus elastic scattering is investigated in the framework of the multiple scattering theory. Conventional factorization approximations on the π–nucleus scattering amplitude are compared with calculations that take into account the nucleon Fermi motion by using π–12C as an example. The importance of a careful treatment of the Fermi motion in low energy scattering will be stressed.

Abstract. Ensemble randomized maximum likelihood (EnRML) is an iterative (stochastic) ensemble smoother, used for large and nonlinear inverse problems, such as history matching and data assimilation. Its current formulation is overly complicated and has issues with computational costs, noise, and covariance localization, even causing some practitioners to omit crucial prior information. This paper resolves these difficulties and streamlines the algorithm, without changing its output. These simplifications are achieved through the careful treatment of the linearizations and subspaces. For example, it is shown (a) how ensemble linearizations relate to average sensitivity, and (b) that the ensemble does not loose rank during updates. The paper also draws significantly on the theory of the (deterministic) iterative ensemble Kalman smoother (IEnKS). Comparative benchmarks are obtained with the Lorenz-96 model with these two smoothers and the ensemble smoother using multiple data assimilation (ES-MDA).

Beef ageing is a technique used by meat technologists, retailers, and restaurateurs to intensify flavor and improve tenderness due to the natural enzymatic processes occurring in meat postmortem. There is a widespread consensus that meat should age to achieve desirable palatability and tenderness. However, taking into account obvious advantages and disadvantages it is questionable which technique of meat ageing is to be selected. The paper presents two techniques of beef ageing (dry and wet) and their effect on the final sensory quality of meat, weight losses, and microbiological status. On the one hand, dry ageing primarily augments the flavor of meat. On the other hand, wet ageing notably increases the meat tenderness. Unfortunately, dry ageing of unpacked beef (or beef cuts) is a process which requires specific temperatures, relative humidity, airflow, and high standards of hygienic conditions. In contrast, wet ageing of meat in a vacuum bag does not require such circumstances (with the exception of temperature). Moreover, wet ageing can further amplify the effect of dry ageing, thus creating an additional benefit. The main advantages of this combination are the constrained weight loss of beef and a substantial reduction in the risk of contamination. Although the dry beef ageing process is extremely time-consuming, requires particular attention and professional knowledge, it turns out that a narrow group of consumers is prepared to pay a premium for the properly manufactured final productthat stands out in terms of a unique taste profile. Furthermore, such a product is nutritious and completely safe from the health point of view (the lack of pathogenic microorganisms and mycotoxins as well as relatively low level of biogenic amines) when good hygienic and manufacturing practices (temperature, humidity, air-flow, careful treatment) are respected.
