AbstractThis research aimed to evaluate the bond strength by micro tensile strength (µTBS), elastic modulus (EM) and flexural strength (FS) by the three-point test using three types of composite resins: Charisma Diamond, Filtek Z350 and Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill; and three adhesion techniques: adhesive, silane, silane and adhesive. The combinations of each resin with the adhesive technique resulted in nine groups (n = 12). Initially, with the composites, EM and FS tests were performed. Sequentially, each fragment was repaired with the different adhesive systems. All samples were subjected to µTBS testing on a universal assay machine. Data were subjected to the normality test and the parametric ANOVA test. Charisma resin showed the highest values in EM and RF compared to the other composite resins (p <0.05). The highest µTBS value was for silane + adhesive repaired Charisma resin. The lowest µTBS values were in Bulk Fill resin, regardless of adhesive system. The EM and FS results showed that Filtek Z350 resins had the best results, while bulk fill resins had lower results. It was concluded that Charisma and Filtek Z350 resins presented better results. However, in the bulk fill group, the lowest mean values of µTBS, FS and EM were obtained, as well as the lowest value in EM.Keywords: Composite Resins. Adhesives. Flexural Strength.ResumoEsta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar a resistência de união (RU) por resistência à microtração, módulo de elasticidade (ME) e resistência à flexão (RF) pelo teste de três pontos, utilizando três tipos de resinas compostas: Charisma Diamond, Filtek Z350 e Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill; e três técnicas de adesão: adesivo, silano, silano e adesivo. As combinações de cada resina com a técnica adesiva resultaram nove grupos (n= 12). Inicialmente, com os compósitos foram realizados testes de ME e RF. Sequencialmente, cada fragmento foi reparado com os diferentes sistemas adesivos. Todas as amostras foram submetidas ao teste de RU por microtração em uma máquina de ensaio universal. Os dados foram submetidos ao teste de normalidade e ao teste paramétrico ANOVA. A resina Charisma apresentou os maiores valores no ME e RF em relação às demais resinas compostas (p <0,05). O maior valor de RU foi para a resina Charisma reparada com silano + adesivo. Os menores valores de RU foram na resina Bulk Fill, independentemente do sistema adesivo. Os resultados no ME e RF mostraram que as resinas Filtek Z350 obtiveram os melhores resultados, enquanto as resinas bulk fill obtiveram resultados inferiores. Conclui-se que as resinas Charisma e Filtek Z350 apresentaram melhores resultados. Entretanto, no grupo de bulk fill obteve se as menores médias de RU, RF e ME, bem como o menor valor no ME.Palavras-chave: Resinas Compostas. Adesivos. Resistência à Flexão.

Clinical Relevance Bulk-fill composite resins may have comparable mechanical properties to conventional composite resin. Preheating does not reduce the mechanical properties of composite resins. SUMMARY Statement of Problem: Bulk-fill composite resins are increasingly used for direct restorations. Preheating high-viscosity versions of these composites has been advocated to increase flowability and adaptability. It is not known what changes preheating may cause on the mechanical properties of these composite resins. Moreover, the mechanical properties of these composites after mastication simulation is lacking. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of fatiguing and preheating on the mechanical properties of bulk-fill composite resin in comparison to its conventional counterpart. Methods and Materials: One hundred eighty specimens of Filtek One Bulk Fill Restorative (FOBR; Bulk-Fill, 3M ESPE) and Filtek Supreme Ultra (FSU; Conventional, 3M ESPE) were prepared for each of the following tests: fracture toughness (International Organization for Standardization, ISO 6872), diametral tensile strength (No. 27 of ANSI/ADA), flexural strength, and elastic modulus (ISO Standard 4049). Specimens in the preheated group were heated to 68°C for 10 minutes and in the fatiguing group were cyclically loaded and thermocycled for 600,000 cycles and then tested. Two-/one-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey Honest Significant Difference (HSD) post hoc test was used to analyze data for statistical significance (α=0.05). Results: Preheating and fatiguing had a significant effect on the properties of both FSU and FOBR. Fracture toughness increased for FOBR specimens when preheated and decreased when fatigued (p=0.016). FOBR had higher fracture toughness value than FSU. Diametral tensile strength decreased significantly after fatiguing for FSU (p=0.0001). FOBR had a lower diametral tensile strength baseline value compared with FSU (p=0.004). Fatiguing significantly reduced the flexural strength of both FSU and FOBR (p=0.011). Preheating had no effect on the flexural strength of either FSU or FOBR. Preheating and fatiguing significantly decreased the elastic modulus of both composite resins equally (p&gt;0.05). Conclusions: Preheating and fatiguing influenced the mechanical properties of composite resins. Both composites displayed similar mechanical properties. Preheating did not yield a major negative effect on their mechanical properties; the clinical implications are yet to be determined.

This study evaluated the influence of the mode and time of solvent evaporation on the tensile strength (TS), flexural strength (FS) and elastic modulus (EM) of two adhesive systems: Scotchbond Multipurpose (SBMP) and Clearfil SE (CSEB). For this purpose, rectangular samples (2x1x7 mm) were prepared with 10 μL of primer and the solvents were evaporated with air spray at (23±1) ºC, (40±1) ºC and negative control (without spray). For each temperature, the times of 5, 20, 30, and 60 seconds were investigated. The statistical results showed that evaporation at 40±1ºC resulted in better EM for the two adhesives tested and all the evaporation times evaluated. However, there were no significant differences between the times and modes of evaporation for TS. The results of this study indicate that evaporation at a temperature of (40±1) °C could improve the elastic modulus of both adhesives tested, regardless of the evaporating time.

The formation of a hybrid layer is the main bonding mechanism of current dentin-bonding systems. This study evaluated the morphology and thickness of the resin-infiltrated dentinal layer after the application of adhesive systems. The dentin-bonding agents were evaluated on flat dentinal preparations confected on the occlusal surfaces of human teeth. The test specimens were prepared and inspected under scanning electron microscopy at a magnification of X 2,000. The adhesive systems were responsible for different hybrid layer thicknesses (p < 0.05), and the mean values were: for Scotchbond MP Plus (SM), 7.41 ± 1.24mum; for Single Bond (SB), 5.55 ± 0.82mum; for Etch & Prime 3.0 (EP), 3.86 ± 1.17mum; and for Clearfil SE Bond (CB), 1.22 ± 0.45mum. The results suggest that the conventional three-step adhesive system (SM) was responsible for the thickest hybrid layer, followed by the one-bottle adhesive (SB). The self-etching adhesives, EP and CB, produced the formation of the thinnest hybrid layers.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of four adhesive systems applied to primary dentin and enamel and verify, after SBS testing, the failure mode of the adhesive interface. Sixty extracted sound primary molars were selected and crowns were sectioned in a mesial-distal direction. Specimens were randomly assigned into two groups (adhesion to enamel and adhesion to dentin) and then subdivided into four subgroups according to the adhesive system (n=15): Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (SMP) – Single Bond (SB) – Clearfil SE Bond (and Adper Prompt LPop (APL) – SBS tests were performed and the obtained values were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey tests (p&lt;0.05). The failure mode analysis was performed with a Scanning Electron Microscope (XL-30, Philips). SBS mean values on enamel were [MPa (SD)]: SMP – 27.89 (7.49); SB – 23.92 (8.8); CSB – 24.36 (6.69); APL – 25.96 (4.08); and on dentin: SMP – 17.29 (4.25); SB – 18.2 (8.74); CSB – 16.13 (7.14); APL – 6.04 (3.35). The predominant failure mode was cohesive (primarily of the bonding agent). On enamel SBS was statistically similar for all four adhesives. On dentin SBS of APL was lower than the other tested adhesives.

SUMMARY This clinical study assessed the performance of posterior composite resins applied with the Adper™ Single Bond Plus (SB) and Adper™ Scotchbond SE (SE) adhesive systems and Filtek™ Supreme Plus composite resin, using modified US Public Health Service criteria. A total of 97 restorations were placed in posterior teeth by two calibrated operators. Application of the materials followed manufacturers' instructions. The restorations were evaluated by two examiners at baseline and after one year. Statistical analyses were conducted using the proportion test at a significance level of 5% (p&lt;0.05). All the restorations evaluated (ie, 100%) received an alpha rating for the criteria of marginal discoloration and marginal integrity at baseline. At one year, for marginal discoloration, 64.6% of SB and 61.2% of SE received an alpha rating. For marginal integrity, 72.9% of SB and 77.6% of SE received an alpha rating. The other restorations received bravo ratings for both criteria. None of the teeth that received the restorative systems presented caries lesions around the restorations. A total of eight teeth presented postoperative sensitivity one week after baseline, five with SB and three with SE; the symptom had disappeared one year later. One year later, composite resin restorations using either adhesive system showed satisfactory clinical performance.

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate hybrid layer thickness of primary molars sectioned with diamond, carbide and ultrasonic CVD burs. Study Design: The occlusal enamel surfaces of ten molars were removed and superficial dentin was exposed. Three standardized cavities were prepared at mesial, central and distal exposed dentin with diamond, carbide and ultrasonic CVD burs, respectively. A self-etching adhesive system (Adhese, Ivoclar/Vivadent) was applied to prepared cavities and composite resin Z100 (3M/ESPE) was inserted according to manufacturers’ instructions to hybridized dentin. Samples were lightcured and the crown was sectioned mesio-distally dividing the restored cavities in two halves which were observed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in order to quantitatively evaluate hybrid layer thickness (µm). Three repeated measures were performed at mesial, central and distal sites and mean values obtained were submitted to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Data (mean ± sd) obtained were (µm): 2.69 (0.44), 3.38 (1.23) and 2.72 (1.18) for diamond, carbide and CVD burs, respectively. No differences were observed among groups (p ≯ 0.05). The adhesive systems promoted mechanical retention, uniform and continuous hybrid layer and resin tags formation at all dentin sites for all instruments tested. Conclusion: The results suggest that the minimally invasive cavities prepared with diamond, carbide and CVD for ultrasound, promoted hybrid layer formation with a similar thickness regardless the bur used.

Due to many different characteristics such as irregular polygon particle with pointed edges, rough surface and larger content of stone powder, machine-made sand has ignorable effects on the properties of concrete. As the basis for the design of concrete structures, the relations among the basic mechanical properties of concrete such as compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength and elastic modulus should be clearly understood. This paper summarizes the test data from the published references, and discusses the relations among these properties by statistical analyses compared with those of ordinary concrete. The results show that the axial compressive strength and the tensile strength can be prospected by the same formulas of ordinary concrete specified in current Chinese design code, but the prospected tensile strength should multiply a reducing coefficient when the strength grade of concrete is lower than C30. The elastic modulus of concrete with machine-made sand is larger than that of ordinary concrete, which should be prospect by the formula in this paper. Meanwhile, the formula of flexural strength is suggested.

Objective: To evaluate the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of total and self- etch adhesives irradiated at different distances. Materials and Methods: Sixty cylindrical specimens of 0.78mm diameter and 10 mm length were prepared of two types of adhesive systems total etch Excite DSC (EX – Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and one-step self-etch Clearfil S3 Bond (S3, Kuraray Medical Inc., Tokyo, Japan). Specimens of each adhesive were divided into three groups according to the light irradiation distance (0, 2, 4mm) (n=10). Each specimen was attached to universal testing machine (Digital Force Gauge, IMADA CO., LTD, Japan) and loaded at cross head speed of 1mm/min until failure. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Independent Student t-test at p< 0.05. Results: Mean UTS for total etch (24.63, 18.19, 17.26 Mpa) and for self-etch (12.68, 8.53, 7.58Mpa) at (0, 2, 4mm) distances. Specimens irradiated directly show significantly the highest UTS while those irradiated at 4mm show the lowest values (p<0.05). Excite DSC total etch adhesive have higher UTS than Clearfil S3 self-etch adhesive regardless of irradiation distance (p<0.05).Conclusions: The UTS of the evaluated adhesives was light irradiation distance and adhesive system dependant.

The effect of low temperature (-35°C) on the mechanical properties of concrete with different strength grade such as compressive strength, flexural strength, splitting tensile strength and elastic modulus was studied. The results showed that all of the mechanical properties were improved at -35°C. It was also can be found from the tests, as the strength grade increased, the growth ratios at -35°C of compressive strength, flexural strength and splitting tensile strength decreased. But the growth ratio of elastic modulus increased with the increasing of strength grade.

SUMMARY The present study determined the mechanical properties and volumetric polymerization shrinkage of different categories of resin composite. Three high viscosity bulk fill resin composites were tested: Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill (TB, Ivoclar Vivadent), Filtek Bulk Fill posterior restorative (FB, 3M ESPE), and Sonic Fill (SF, Kerr Corp). Two low-shrinkage resin composites, Kalore (KL, GC Corp) and Filtek LS Posterior (LS, 3M ESPE), were used. Three conventional resin composites, Herculite Ultra (HU, Kerr Corp), Estelite ∑ Quick (EQ, Tokuyama Dental), and Filtek Supreme Ultra (SU, 3M ESPE), were used as comparison materials. Following ISO Specification 4049, six specimens for each resin composite were used to determine flexural strength, elastic modulus, and resilience. Volumetric polymerization shrinkage was determined using a water-filled dilatometer. Data were evaluated using analysis of variance followed by Tukey's honestly significant difference test (α=0.05). The flexural strength of the resin composites ranged from 115.4 to 148.1 MPa, the elastic modulus ranged from 5.6 to 13.4 GPa, and the resilience ranged from 0.70 to 1.0 MJ/m3. There were significant differences in flexural properties between the materials but no clear outliers. Volumetric changes as a function of time over a duration of 180 seconds depended on the type of resin composite. However, for all the resin composites, apart from LS, volumetric shrinkage began soon after the start of light irradiation, and a rapid decrease in volume during light irradiation followed by a slower decrease was observed. The low shrinkage resin composites KL and LS showed significantly lower volumetric shrinkage than the other tested materials at the measuring point of 180 seconds. In contrast, the three bulk fill resin composites showed higher volumetric change than the other resin composites. The findings from this study provide clinicians with valuable information regarding the mechanical properties and polymerization kinetics of these categories of current resin composite.
