Background: Research on Collegiate Recovery Programs (CRPs) is emerging. There is a need to examine aspects of CRPs to highlight program efficacy and best practices within local settings.Aim: As distinct cycles within a larger action research study, two small inquiries within a local university setting assessed: (1) how student members of the organization "Students for Recovery" defined their needs, and (2) how student employees of the CRP described their roles and success in their work.Methods: Semi-structured interviews examined students in recovery and student CRP employees.Results: Thematic analysis for each group produced two sets of qualitative results. Members of the student organization "Students for Recovery" described their needs as social support and safety, awareness and advocacy. Student employees of the CRP described their role as outreach and one-on-one support as well as strategic program planning. Instances of success were described as the departmental support, and their unique peer perspective.Conclusions: Two queries described needs of students in recovery and role descriptions of student CRP employees within a specific setting. Robust studies are needed to understand the impact of local CRP programs and can provide context to guide informed, responsive programming and best practices.

Abstract Introduction Interventions for burn-injured children (BIC) largely focus on the child with the physical injury while consideration for family systems appears incidental. This study aimed to gain insight into the perspectives and needs of parents/caregivers of pediatric burn patients (PPBP). When considering BIC within the context of a family system, it is reasonable to expect the injury to engulf everyone. The literature emphasizes the acute and lasting physical and emotional impact of burns. Moreover, research suggests PPBP experience an emotional response to the incident that is often complicated by physical absence from their other uninjured children. Thus, this exploratory study fills a gap by engaging the unique perspective of the PPBP and posits direct implications for essential program enhancement/development. Methods PPBP attending a family program participated in semi-structured interviews (N=11) guided by the research question: What are the experiences of PPBP? Participants’ self-identified as African American (n=4), Caucasian (n=5), and Latino (n=2). Age ranged from 29 to 48 (M=38.36, SD=6.14). Interviews involved queries regarding the burn incident, from injury to present (M=7.12 years, SD=4.61), including support received, what they wish people understood about the experience, and ideas for programming. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. Data were analyzed using van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomenological approach. Results Findings supported PPBP’s unique experience coalescing into one theme—the never-ending trip from hell—conceptualized as, “I didn’t mean to get here—none of this is familiar and I can’t find anyone I know. What’s going on and when will it be over?” Mutual painful insights were parental guilt, sensory experiences related to the acute incident and aftercare, unknown prognosis and medical treatment expectations, physical/emotional health problems, family members insensitivity, managing the cruelty of others, isolation, marital strains, and sibling tensions. Families also reported positive outcomes: strength of informal support networks, empowerment through educating others, and creating new allies. PPBP emphasized the benefits associated with meeting other families who also endured a burn injury and the importance of mutual support. Conclusions Programs should address the needs of all family members, not just BIC. In order to mitigate the impact of burn trauma, the family system impact remains a critical primary consideration for research and interventions. Applicability of Research to Practice Findings can contribute to program planning with increased consideration of the family system. As a result of findings from this study, siblings are now included in a summer camp program historically serving only BIC.

Abstract Introduction When considering burn-injured children as part of a larger family unit, it is expected their injury will stress the system; yet the focus has mainly been on the injured child and treated as incidental for the family. Though research on the family is evolving, less is known from the uninjured sibling perspective. Sibling relationships have a unique impact on development. This study aimed to understand the experience of growing up with a burn-injured sibling in childhood, with attention to how identity was shaped. Acquiring knowledge from uninjured siblings will facilitate a more integrative understanding and holistic approach to aid families. Thus, this exploratory study fills a gap by engaging the uninjured sibling’s perspective with implications for program enhancement/development. Methods Narrative inquiry was utilized to explicate the narratives of adults who grew up with a burn-injured sibling in childhood via semi-structured interviews (N=7). The research questions were: 1) What are the experiences, or stories, of identified adults whose sibling experienced a burn injury? 2) What do the narratives of identified adults whose sibling experienced a burn injury reveal about how their identities were shaped? 3) What are the implications for program/service development and/or enhancement elucidated by identified adults whose sibling experienced a burn injury? A purposeful criterion sampling method was used, but challenges accessing participants resulted in sequential and emergence-driven strategies. Participants’ self-identified as Caucasian (n=7), female (n=4), and male (n=3). Age ranged from 20 to 57 (M=33.14, SD=14.32) at the time of the interview and 0 to 13 (M=5.25, SD=4.25) at the time of their siblings’ injury. Interviews queried the burn incident, family relations, communication, and support received. Riessman’s thematic approach to narrative inquiry was employed for analysis. Results Findings supported five themes: 1) separation and alternative caregiving, 2) altered interactions and ambivalent roles, 3) (r)evolving emotional pain, 4) communication concerns, and 5) identity through autobiographical reasoning. The data suggest uninjured siblings have their own unique narratives that have failed to be acknowledged in research and practice, though identity clarity and meaning-making were articulated in their reflections. Moreover, findings support consideration of many experiences as a primary trauma. Conclusions The needs of uninjured siblings—specifically related to inclusion, identity, and resource acquisition—should be addressed to mitigate the impact of burn trauma. The family system remains a critical area for research and program enhancement/development. Applicability of Research to Practice Findings can contribute to program planning for the family with increased attention to the uninjured sibling’s experience and concern for their specific needs.

Abstract Conducting construction activities in occupied environments presents a great challenge due to the additional logistical requirements and the presence of the building occupants. The aim of this research is to gather and evaluate the means and methods to successfully plan, manage, and execute construction activities in occupied spaces in an effort to provide consolidated industry tools and strategies for maintaining a schedule and minimizing the impact on the occupants. The methodology of the research utilizes an exploratory approach to gather qualitative data. The data was collected through interviews with industry professionals to identify industry best practices. The semi-structured interviews provided a platform for the documents, lessons learned, and the techniques and strategies used for occupied construction by the construction industry. The information obtained in the interview process identified six themes that are critical to achieving and maintaining quality in occupied construction. These themes of the schedule, cost, customer satisfaction, planning, fire/life safety and utilities, and contractor management are reviewed in detail, and the paper discusses how to manage each element. The analysis and extracted management techniques, procedures and strategies can be used by the construction industry for future projects by focusing on the critical aspects of occupied construction and the manner in which to succeed with it.

This paper examines the impact of community education and challenges facing Centres for Education and Community Action as a rural development strategy in Cameroon. The study was conducted in the North-West Region of Cameroon, employing field observations, semi-structured interviews with key informants using a convenient sampling technique and through elaborate review of documents. These research instruments were blended into what is termed triangulation and the data collected was analysed descriptively. The main focus of qualitative analysis is to understand the ways in which people act and the accounts that people give for their actions. This paper posits that extreme dependence on the provision of Western formal education cannot solve the problems of a rapidly changing society like Cameroon, which is facing a long-term economic crisis and persistent unemployment issues of graduates. Consequently, education should be redefined in the context of the prevailing economic crisis to make it responsive to the aspirations of rural communities. Findings showed that community education had contributed towards rural development immensely but has suffered many challenges due to neglect of the field in the policy agenda. This paper recommends the integration of community education with formal education to facilitate group and community betterment in particular and rural transformation in general.

BackgroundThere is an emerging debate that general practice in its current format is out-dated and there is a requirement to move to a federated model of provision where groups of Practices come together. The emergence of federations has developed over the past 5 years but the factors that influence how federations develop and the impact of this new model is an under researched area.AimThe study explored the rationale around why a group of independent GP practices opted to pursue an alternative business venture and the benefits that this strategy offered.MethodA single organisational case study of a federation in the North of England was conducted between 2011–2016. Mixed methods data collection included individual and group semi-structured interviews and quantitative surveys.ResultsFederations promote collaborative working, relying on strategic coherence of multiple individual GP practices through a shared vision and common purpose. Findings revealed many complexities in implementing a common strategy across multiple independent businesses. The ability of the federation to gain legitimacy was two dimensional – externally and internally. The venture had mixed successes, but their approach to quality improvement proved innovative and demonstrated outcomes on a population basis. The study identified significant pressures that practices were experiencing and the need to seek alternative ways of working but there was no shared vision or inclination to relinquish individual practice autonomy.ConclusionOrganisational development support is critical to reform General Practice. Whether central funding through the GP Five Year Forward View will achieve the scale of change required is yet to be evidenced.

Khmer Girl’s in Action is a nonprofit that successfully utilizes community-based participatory research (CBPR) with university partners to create social change for youth in Long Beach, CA. Based on semi-structured interviews and content analysis of news articles, I explore the impact and sustainability of this research work and the research partnerships. Findings highlight impacts such as youth empowerment, heightened awareness around community needs, policy change, and CBPR curriculum improvements in the field as impacts. Sustainability requires integrating research into program funding, utilizing a tailored training curriculum, building on community members prior relationships, and selecting partners that share common goals, levels of commitment, and flexibility. As funders demand more data to justify community needs, understanding more examples of such work in the Asian American community will be useful for informing future partnerships.

Aim: To understand the impact of anticancer treatment on oncology patients’ ability to use electronic solutions for completing patient-reported outcomes (ePRO). Materials & methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven individuals who had experienced a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Results: Participants reported that the following would impact the ability to interact with an ePRO solution: peripheral neuropathy of the hands (4/7), fatigue and/or concentration and memory issues (6/7), where they are in a treatment cycle (5/7). Approaches to improve usability included: larger, well-spaced buttons to deal with finger numbness, the ability to pause a survey and complete at a later point and presenting the recall period with every question to reduce reliance on memory. Conclusion: Symptoms associated with cancers and anticancer treatments can impact the use of technologies. The recommendations for optimizing the electronic implementation of patient-reported outcome instruments in this population provides the potential to improve data quality in oncology trials and places patient needs at the forefront to ensure ‘fit-for-purpose’ solutions.

SYNOPSIS Auditing standards require external auditors to inquire of client-employees regarding their knowledge of actual or suspected fraud (PCAOB 2010b; AICPA 2016). However, the extant literature provides little guidance on practical methods that auditors can employ to increase the likelihood of fraud disclosure and improve audit quality. Drawing upon best practices in the whistleblowing literature and psychological theories on self-regulation, we experimentally test the efficacy of two practical strategies that auditors can employ during the fraud inquiry process: actively promoting statutory whistleblower protections and strategically timing their fraud inquiries. Our results indicate that auditors are more likely to elicit client-employee fraud disclosures by actively promoting statutory whistleblower protections and strategically timing the fraud inquiry to take place in the afternoon, when client-employee self-regulation is more likely to be depleted. These two audit inquiry strategies should be of considerable interest to audit practitioners, audit committees, and those concerned with improving audit quality. Volunteering, the volunteer’s intercultural competence and emotional intelligence contribute to intercultural education and sustainability in various societies of today. The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of emotional intelligence and intercultural competence on work productivity of volunteers. The first part of the article substantiates theoretical associations between emotional intelligence, intercultural competence and work productivity. Based on theoretical insights, empirical research methodology was prepared, which consisted of four categories divided into sub-categories that provided the structure of the question groups. The empirical research involved seven informants working in Lithuania, who welcomed volunteers from abroad. The research was conducted using the method of semi-structured interviews. The conclusions present a systematic perspective towards the role of emotional intelligence in the intercultural competence and work productivity of volunteers. In this context, emotional intelligence works as a mediating factor. The contributing role of volunteer-receiving organisations in the development of the volunteers’ emotional intelligence is also highlighted.
