The present work aims to carry out a structured and bibliographic review based on the results found regarding the terms Hippotherapy and Elderly people. For the reference search, the following keywords in English, Hippotherapy and Elderly, were used as descriptors, these keywords being always entered in databases of the same language. The computerized databases SCOPUS, WOS, SPORTDiscus were used. PubMed and Cochrane. To limit the search for documents, four inclusion criteria were introduced: i) Mention at least some of the characteristics of Hippotherapy for the elderly (minimum 20 words that mention the subject), ii) Select only scientific documents (journal articles) These articles may have an experimental design or be review articles, iii) Be accessible and be available in full text or with access to the abstract, and iiii) Be written in Spanish, English or Portuguese. The results show that the papers on Hippotherapy in the elderly address different research topics and show that equestrian therapies have beneficial therapeutic effects in the elderly population. Hippotherapy interventions improve static balance and dynamic balance, postural balance, functional mobility, flexibility, muscular strength, gait and cadence of steps. They reduce spasticity, causing a decrease in the risk of falls and an improvement in the quality of life of the elderly. In addition, they cause benefits on a psychological level, reducing levels of stress and depression, which produces an improvement in the quality of sleep and positively influences mood.

The population of Brazil and the world is aging. The great challenge is to grow old by maintaining quality of life with health, including oral health. The objective of this study was to identify the recurrent themes in Geriodontics, through a bibliometric survey, using the database of Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), conducted in 2016. Geriodontics, as a relatively new specialty, presents major challenges related to the elderly population (oral health, prostheses, periodontics, for example). In view of a historical context of aging and increased elderly population, there is a concern to deepen the studies in relation to the subject. Knowing the problems allows offering a better service with quality and adequate training of the professional.

Aim: execute a theoretical review about the use and applicability of subcutaneous therapy and to construct a guide for dilutions and compatibilities between drugs, allowing a safe and effective use by elderly or in need of palliative care patients.Source of data: The research resource used was the search for scientific data in databases such as Lilacs, Medline, Pubmed, and Scielo, to perform a narrative review on the subject, using the terms "Hipodermóclise", "Terapia subcutânea", "Hypodermoclysis" and "Subcutaneous”.Summary of findings: Considering the progressive increase in the elderly population and also in the number of people with chronic or terminal diseases, is important the development of techniques which ensure the comfort and the autonomy of these patients. The Hypodermoclysis or subcutaneous therapy has its therapeutical efficiency proved and it also can be helpful with patients who don´t have the oral way as a possibility for medication administration and hydration. It presents a safe and low-risk way to adverse effects, also acting as relief resource to symptoms such as náusea, vomiting, hard control pain, and dehydration. However, there are some disadvantages such as the impossibility of fast doses and volume adjustment, the limited and infusion speed and the small number of medicine and electrolytes that can be infused. Conclusion: Hypodermoclysis is a safe way of administration, since the clinical characteristics of each patient are considered and, in order to fit the technique, it is necessary to create a database according to the reality of each institution, considering the characteristics of each medicine and the necessary care to promote the quality of life of these patients, so that they can reach their therapeutic goals.

The elderly population has grown considerably in recent decades with a significant increase in psychic diseases, including depression, considered one of the major causes of functional decline and decreased quality of life. The purpose of this research was to understand depression in institutionalized elderly and to relate which levels of depression interfere with their functional capacity. The applied methodology consists of an integrative review based on scientific production, used as inclusion criteria, articles selected from the databases of the Virtual Health Library (VHL): LILACS, SciELO and MEDLINE, which were published between 2006 to 2016 and collected in the first half of 2017, in Portuguese and English. The results of this review are expected to contribute to the reflection on the needs of psychological support to the elderly living in the institutional context. Thus, it is important for health professionals to understand about the necessary knowledge about the symptoms of depression to serve as subsidies in the performance of humanized and integral care, with appropriate guidance for the prevention of this mental disorder and functional capacity in the elderly.

Background: Scoliosis in adults is a spinal deformity in adult patients with a Cobb angle of more than 10° in the coronal plane. Degenerative scoliosis is a term used for the presence of spinal coronal deviation in the elderly population due to segment degeneration. This case report presents a quite different management option, namely applying intraoperative vertebral correction to the subject. The operative procedure carried out on the patient has experienced success as indicated by improvement in symptoms and curve progressiveness in patients.Case: A patient suffers degenerative scoliosis at Surabaya RKZ Hospital. Data is taken from medical records, patient clinical records, home visits, and physical examination of patients.Discussion: From the results of the post op clinical examination, it was found that pain complaints improved compared to pre-op complaints. From the results of the post op radiological examination, the position of fixation was good, there was no spondylolisthesis, lumbar dextroscoliosis (+), lumbar spondylosis (+), drain tip as high as Th12-L1.Conclusion: Giving operative management can directly improve the patient's quality of life and reduce symptoms experienced in a shorter time.

Abstract Background This study focuses on the self-perception of the voice in the elderly as assessed by the Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) questionnaire. This work aimed to compare differences in the voice-related quality of life outcomes between (1) elderly with and without voice disorders, (2) female and male elderly with voice disorders, and (3) different types of voice disorders, and to explore the correlation between the V-RQOL and perceptual analysis done by the clinician. Forty-three dysphonic and 44 non-dysphonic elderly filled out the Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) protocol that analyzes the impact of dysphonia on life quality. Vocal perceptual assessment of each subject with dysphonia was made by three voice therapists, followed by a flexible nasofibrolaryngoscope. Results A significant statistical difference was found between the means of total V-RQOL scores and its subdomains for each group (dysphonic and non-dysphonic). No significant differences were found between male and female elderly with dysphonia. The statistical analysis showed a significant correlation with the vocal assessment made by the clinicians and the V-RQOL self-assessment made by the subjects. Conclusions This study provides valuable information regarding the risk factors that contribute to vocal quality in the elderly population. Our results revealed that different types of voice disorders are common among the elderly population with significant negative effects on quality of life. It was observed that the poorest score on the V-RQOL was for functional voice disorders, followed by neoplastic lesions, whereas MAPLs had the best score on the V-RQOL.

In recent decades, the world has undergone a demographic transformation with a rapid growth of the elderly population, resulting in an increased demand for funds to maintain their health and drug consumption. Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes occurring in the elderly can interfere directly in the adverse effects of drugs and increase the risk of intoxication. In addition, there are external factors interfering with the pharmacotherapy of the elderly, such as inappropriate use and the lack of access to information. Many therapeutic classes of drugs should be used with caution or avoided in the elderly population, such as anti-inflammatory and some anti-hypertensive drugs, diuretics and digitalis. If not managed carefully, these medicines can affect the safety and quality of life in the elderly. Thus, the aim of this review was to identify drugs that should be used with caution in elderly patients in order to avoid intoxication and/or adverse drug events.

Aging is characterized by a progressive decline in function and morphological aspects of biological tissues, with especial regards to cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems. In this sense, exercise has been shown to strongly counteract these aging-induced detrimental effects. Endurance exercise (EE) has been shown to reduce the rate of decline of factors related to cardiorespiratory fitness. In addition, the adoption of resistance training (RT) may also induce relevant adaptations, especially related to increased muscle strength and power levels, that have shown to positively influence functional aspects as improved balance and reduced risk of falls in the elderly population. Then, the aim of the present study is to briefly review the exercise literature regarding its mechanisms that could potentially present “antiaging” effects.
