Background: Mangrove flora possess compounds with potential medicinal values with unique bioactive components. Traditionally Rhizophora mucronata, a mangrove has been used extensively for the treatment of diabetes. Studies revealed that, the leaves of Rhizophora (Bhora) had promising anti-diabetic action in rat model.Methods: A comparative analysis of the anti-diabetic action of fresh juice and ethanolic extract of Rhizophora mucronata leaves was carried out in Streptozotocin induced diabetic model and the different biochemical parameters were evaluated.Results: Present research explored a comparative analysis of the anti-diabetic action of fresh juice and ethanolic extract of leaves of Rhizophora mucronata Lam. in Streptozotocin induced diabetic model. The ethanolic extract showed more potent effect in lowering the elevated blood sugar in the diabetic rats, 200mg/kg was the most effective dose for both the extracts. The ethanol extract was more beneficial having potent lipid lowering action along with anti-hyperglycemic property.Conclusions: This supports the scientific validation for using Rhizophora mucronata leaves in the treatment of diabetes as traditional folk medicine. Identification of the bioactive molecule is under process.

Diabetes mellitus has been treated orally with herbal remedies based on folk medicine since ancient times.Embelia ribes burm(Myrsinaceae), known commonly as vidanga, was used in Ayurveda for its anthelmintic activity. Ayurveda describes vidanga as pungent, causes increase in digestive fire, and cures flatulence and colic. A single study reported the antihyperglycemic activity of decoction ofE. ribesin glucose-induced hyperglycemic albino rabbits. In the present study, the lipid-lowering and antioxidant potential of ethanolic extract ofE. ribes burmwas investigated in streptozotocin (40 mg/kg, IV, single injection)-induced diabetes in rats. Twenty days of orally feeding the extract (200 mg/kg) to diabetic rats resulted in significant (P< 0.01) decrease in blood glucose, serum total cholesterol, and triglycerides, and increase in HDLcholesterol levels when compared to pathogenic diabetic rats. Further, the extract also lowered the liver and pancreas thiobarbituric acid–reactive substances (TBARSs) values (P< 0.01) when compared to TBARS values of liver and pancreas of pathogenic diabetic rats. The results of test drug were comparable to gliclazide (25 mg/kg, orally), a standard antihyperglycemic agent. This is the first pilot study to provide biochemical evidence of potential ofE. ribesin diabetic dyslipidemia.

Background: Diabetes an epidemic that gives rise to an increased macro vascular complication mortality rate of 1.5 million annually, increasing by 2035. Treatment of diabetes is complicated and associated with a severe side effect.</p> <p>Objective: To evaluate the antihyperglycemic property of the ethanolic extract of the back of MYCA and its toxicological effect on the hematological parameters with histopathological analysis of selected organs of induced diabetic albino rats.</p> <p>Method: The ethanoic extract (1000 mg/kg bw and 500mg/kg bw) and glibenclamide (0.5mg/kg bw) were administered to diabetic induced rats.  The effect of the extract on the hematological was studied in the diabetic induced rats. Histopathological changes were observed in the liver of induced diabetic rats after the administration of the MYCA extract.</p> <p>Results: The anti-hyperglycaemic effect was observed at two different levels, for two different doses (1000mg/kg and 500mg/kg). The results also showed significant suppression of blood glucose level in glucose fed hyperglycaemic albino rats but showed no significantly suppressed glucose level in overnight fasted normoglycemic rats.</p> <p>Conclusion: The findings revealed that the ethanolic extract of MITRAGYNA CILIATA (MYCA) possess antihyperglycemic property. Besides, the extract can prevent the various complication of diabetes and improve some hematological parameters.

Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour.) Spreng. are generally used in Chinese folk medicine for treating fever, cough, mumps, sore throats, and mosquito bite. The current study was therefore carried out to provide vital pharmacological details about the leaf. This study investigated the anti-inflammatory properties of ethanolic extract from Plectranthus amboinicus. The leaves of Plectranthus amboinicus were rinsed, air dried and then powdered using machine. The ethanol extract of the plant was used for phytochemical analysis to identify the constituents present in the plants. HPTLC analysis was carried out to investigate its secondary metabolite profile by using the solvent mixture. The anti-inflammatory effect was analysed by inhibition of protein denaturation assay. The hypotonicity induced haemolysis was observed from 100µg/ml to 500µg/ml of extract concentration. The results proved that the ethanolic leaf extract of P.amboinicus has antiinflammatory activity. The presence of flavonoid, quercetin in plant extract was confirmed by HPTLC analysis and these flavonoids may be responsible for the antiinflammatory activity. Further studies are needed to the development of potential drug that may be used for various pharmacological activities.

Background: The whole plant of Coccinia indica is very effective in different types of diseases with fewer side effects. The leaves, roots of this plant were claimed to be useful in the treatment of diabetes mellitus based on folk medicine. The purpose of this study was to examine the antihyperglycemic effect of water extract of C. indica in alloxan diabetes rats. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study is to find whether the conditions, hyperglyclemia and hyerlipidemia, are correlated and whether the application of the aqueous extract leads to abating these two conditions. Materials-Methods: The aqueous leaves extracts of C. indica (200 mg/kg) were administered orally for 14 days, in alloxan induced diabetic rats on Glucose, Lipid profile, Lipoproteins and Lipid metabolizing enzymes activity.   Result: The aqueous leaves extract of C. indica induced significant improvement in glucose, serum Lipids, lipoproteins and lipid metabolizing enzyme activity (HMG CoA reductase, LCAT). Conclusion: The present study indicates that the extract of Coccinia indica exhibits lipid lowering, maintaining lipoproteins concentration and also improves the activities of lipid metabolizing enzyme in hyperglycemic rats leading to an increase in peripheral glucose consumption.

Plants represent a major potential source of drugs for treating diabetes. The study of plants having antidiabetic activity may give a new approach in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Tragia plukenetii is traditionally claimed to be useful in the treatment of diabetes. The present study was intended to evaluate the antihyperglycemic activity of aqueous ethanolic extract on normal fasted, glucose loaded and alloxan induced diabetic rats, at an oral dose of 75, 150 and 300 mg/kg in male Wistar rats. The alcoholic extract has not produced any hypoglycemia in normal fasted rats. The ethanolic extract has displayed a significant dose dependent antihyperglycemic activity in oral glucose tolerance test and in alloxan induced diabetic rats at an oral dose of 150 and 300 mg/kg. The ethanolic extract has effectively scavenged the stable free DPPH radical in-vitro. It is concluded that Tragia plukenetii aerial parts alcoholic extract is effective in controlling blood glucose levels in diabetic rats.

AbstractRhizoma coptidis has been clinically used for a long time for the treatment of various diseases in China, such as hypertension, diabetes, and inflammation. Previous studies have shown that alkaloid components of Rhizoma coptidis extract could be extensively metabolized and the metabolites were also considered to be the therapeutic material basis. However, until now, pharmacokinetic studies of the in vivo metabolites have not been revealed yet. The aim of the present study was to characterize the pharmacokinetics and excretions of five main alkaloids (berberine, jatrorrhizine, palmatine, epiberberine, and coptisine) and their seven metabolites (berberrubine, demethyleneberberine, jatrorrhizine-3-O-β-D-glucuronide, thalifendine-10-O-β-D-glucuronide, berberrubine-9-O-β-D-glucuronide, demethyleneberberine-2-O-sulfate, and demethyleneberberine-2-O-β-D-glucuronide) in rats after oral administration of Rhizoma coptidis extract. Meanwhile, comparative pharmacokinetics and excretions of these analytes in diabetic model rats were also investigated, since Rhizoma coptidis is widely used for the treatment of diabetes. Our results showed that the in vivo existing forms of alkaloid components were phase II metabolites, highlighting the glucuronidation metabolic pathway. In diabetic model rats, the utilization of Rhizoma coptidis alkaloids was significantly increased and the biotransformation of berberine into berberrubine was significantly inhibited.

 Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the hypoglycemic activity of ethanol extract of Saurauia vulcani Korth. leaves.Methods: S. vulcani Korth. leaf powder was extracted by maceration method with ethanol 96%. Hypoglycemic activity was examined on rats which is induced with streptozotocin 40 mg/Kg body weight (BW) at dose of 50; 100; and 200 mg/Kg BW.Results: Hypoglycemic activity of the extract in diabetic rats showed a significant reduction in blood glucose levels (p<0.001) at dosage 50 mg/Kg BW.Conclusion: The results reveal that ethanol extract of S. vulcani Korth. leaves has hypoglycemic activity. Our further study is to assess mechanism action as antidiabetic.

The purpose of this study was to examine the hypoglycemic and antihyperglycemic effect of aqueous leaves extract of F. religiosa in alloxan diabetes albino rats.Aims and Objectives: Therefore, the present thesis aim is in evaluating whether the hyperglycemic condition is related with hyperlipidemia and both these conditions could be controlled by indigenous preparations.Materials and Methods: The aqueous leaves extracts of Ficus religiosa (250 mg/kg) were administered orally for 21 days, in alloxan induced diabetic rats on Glucose, Lipid profile, Lipoproteins and Lipid metabolizing enzymes.Result: The aqueous leaves extract of F. religiosa induced signifi cant improvement in glucose, serum lipids, lipoproteins concentration and lipid metabolizing enzymes activity (Lipase, HMG CoA reductase and LCAT).Conclusion: The present study indicates that the extract of Ficus religiosa exhibits lipid lowering, maintaining lipoproteins concentration and improve the activities of lipid metabolizing enzymes in hyperglycemic rats, by initiating the release of insulin. The present investigation was aimed to study the antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, andin vivoantioxidant properties of the root ofSphaeranthus indicusLinn. in streptozotocin- (STZ-) induced type 1 diabetic rats. Administration of ethanolic extract ofSphaeranthus indicusroot (EESIR) 100 and 200 mg/kg to the STZ-induced diabetic rats showed significant () reduction in blood glucose and increase in body weight compared to diabetic control rats. Both the doses of EESIR-treated diabetic rats showed significant () alteration in elevated lipid profile levels than diabetic control rats. The EESIR treatment in diabetic rats produced significant increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and decrease in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels than diabetic control rats. Administration of EESIR 200 mg/kg produced significant () higher antioxidant activity than EESIR 100 mg/kg. The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of EESIR revealed the presence of biomarkers gallic acid and quercetin. In conclusion, EESIR possess antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, andin vivoantioxidant activity in type 1 diabetic rats. Its antioxidant and lipid lowering effect will help to prevent diabetic complications, and these actions are possibly due to presence of above biomarkers.
