Background:Electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) is frequently viewed negatively, even among health professionals. Such a view might have adverse consequences. Objective: To explore how nursing students and nursing staff view ECT. Methodology: This is a semi-qualitative attitudinal study and the views were compared between nursing .student. and .staff. groups. A questionnaire prepared to assess views about different aspects of ECT was distributed among nursing students and staff of a tertiary-care hospital with a psychiatric service, after an explanation. The questionnaire focused mainly on effectiveness, safety, use, acceptance and some local issues. Results: A total of 108 subjects included 54 nursing staff and students each. Average student age was 21 and staff 29 years. Nearly one-third of students were interested in psychiatry for career versus only 13% staff. The majority of students had seen ECT being given, compared with 40% of staff. Depression was stated as an indication by 62% students versus 40% of staff. More staff thought ECT was more expensive than drugs. More staff indicated adverse effects as a main obstacle while using ECT than students. More students thought it .very effective. versus staff. Regarding safety, both had comparable views, but more staff viewed it as dangerous. More students than staff felt it should be promoted and public awareness should be raised. More students expressed readiness to use ECT if needed for themselves or relatives. Conclusion: Nursing students had more favorable views towards ECT than nursing staff. Background and Objective: Maintaining privacy and ensuring confidentiality with patients is paramount to developing an effective patient-provider relationship. This is often challenging in over-crowded Emergency Departments (EDs). This survey was designed to explore patients’ perceptions on maintenance of privacy and confidentiality and their subsequent interactions with providers in a busy tertiary care hospital in Karachi. Methods: Trained nursing staff conducted structured interviews with 571 patients who presented to The Indus Hospital (TIH) ED from January to December 2020. All patients were 14 years of age or older, could speak and understand Urdu, and provide informed consent. Patients were asked about their perceptions of privacy and confidentiality in the ED and whether this affected their interactions with providers. Results: Respondents were primarily men (64%) under the age of 45 (62%) presenting for the first time (49%). The majority of patients felt that privacy and confidentiality were maintained, however 10% of patients reported that they had rejected examination due to privacy concerns and 15% of patients reported that they had changed or omitted information provided to a provider due to confidentiality concerns. There was correlation between privacy and confidentiality concerns and patient-provider interactions (p<0.0001). Conclusions: Despite the often over-crowded and busy environment of the ED, patients generally felt that privacy and confidentiality were maintained. ObjectiveTo identify the different perceptions on informed surgical consent in a group of Sri Lankan patients.MethodsA qualitative study was conducted in a single surgical unit at a tertiary care hospital from January to May 2018. The protocol conformed to the Declaration of Helsinki. Patients undergoing elective major surgeries were recruited using initial purposive and later theoretical sampling. In-depth interviews were conducted in their native language based on the grounded theory. Initial codes were generated after analysing the transcripts. Constant comparative method was employed during intermediate and advanced coding. Data collection and analyses were conducted simultaneously, until the saturation of the themes. Finally, advanced coding was used for theoretical integrations.ResultsThirty patients (male:female=12:18) were assessed. The mean age was 41±9 years. Sinhalese predominated (50.0%, n=15). Majority underwent thyroidectomy (36.7%, n=11). The generated theory categorises the process of obtaining informed consent in four phases: initial interaction phase, reasoning phase, convincing phase and decision-making phase. Giving consent for surgery was a dependent role between patient, family members and the surgeon, as opposed to an individual decision by the patient. Some patients abstained from asking questions from doctors since doctors were ‘busy’, ‘short-tempered’ or ‘stressed out’. Some found nurses to be more approachable than doctors. Patients admitted that having a bystander while obtaining consent would relieve their stress. They needed doctors to emphasise more on postoperative lifestyle changes and preprocedure counselling at the clinic level. To educate patients about their procedure, some suggested leaflets or booklets to be distributed at the clinic before ward admission. The majority disliked watching educational videos because they were ‘scared’ to look at surgical dissections and blood.ConclusionThe informed consent process should include key elements that are non-culture specific along with elements or practices that consider the cultural norms of the society.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of stigma for mental disorders among nursing staff in a tertiary care hospital, and the secondary objective of the study was to assess the correlation of stigma with the socio-demographic profile and previous experience with mentally ill patients. Methods This cross-sectional study was performed among the 210 nurses working in a tertiary care multispecialty teaching public sector hospital in north India. They were evaluated on community attitudes toward the mentally ill (CAMI) scale. Results About two-thirds of the participants (67.1%) were females and had done graduation (64.2%) in nursing. Nearly 50% of the study participants had an experience of working with mentally ill patients. Female had a more significant positive attitude on the domain of social restrictiveness. Authoritarianism had a significant positive correlation with benevolence and social restrictiveness domains. The benevolence domain had a significant correlation with all other domains. Social restrictiveness domain also had a significant correlation with other domains. Conclusion Nurses have a positive attitude toward mentally ill patients.

Background: Early detection of adverse drug reaction is one step towards the prevention of ADRs. Foundation of Pharmacovigilance is spontaneous reporting which is minimal in India. Among the all health care professionals, nurses are caregivers at bedside. Improvement in knowledge and practice of adverse drug reaction reporting among nurses will definitely increases spontaneous reporting. In this study, knowledge, attitude and practice of nursing staff about pharmacovigilance was evaluated.Methods: It was prospective, cross-sectional, observational, questionnaire-based study among the nurses of the tertiary care hospital Solapur. A questionnaire evaluating knowledge, attitude and practice was distributed among nursing staff and filled questionnaire were collected back and analyzed by microsoft excel 2013.Results: Response rate of our study was 44.88%.  38.61% doctors were knowing meaning of pharmacovigilance while 61.38% participants knew that all drugs available in market are not safe. Taking proper medication history before prescribing drugs was considered important by 92.57% participants. 79.70% participants were aware about Pharmacovigilance program of India. 64.35% doctors answered correctly to elements which are mandatory to record. Only 24.75% participants were knowing the basis that pharmcovigilance provides for.Conclusions: Nursing staff of tertiary care hospital, Solapur had very appreciable and positive attitude towards pharmacovigilance but there is a need for improvement in knowledge and practice of ADR reporting.
