The unique Traditional Islamic architecture characterizes some cities in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The purpose of the study is to highlight the significance of the Traditional Islamic house design, architectural elements, and the use of low-technology in house construction concerning sustainable architecture, in Old Fatimid Cairo and Rosetta (Rashid) cities. The study's method includes a literature review; with an overview of the history, the urban form, and the Islamic house design and architectural elements influenced by the local Islamic context (natural and cultural environments). A field survey included: the selection of eleven examples, five from Old Fatimid Cairo city and six examples from Rosetta (Rashid) city representing the most famous houses including the different architectural elements, and analyzing its components, the house design, spatial organization, building materials, house elements, courtyard, Mashrabiyah, wind catchers, and the construction system. Moreover, a comparative study for the selected Islamic houses illustrates the contexts' impact on the house design. In conclusion, the study highlighted the significance of Islamic house design and low-technology in house design and construction, which could be considered sustainable architecture and developed in the form of advanced technology in the future.

Abstract The article deals with the ecological impacts during a detached house construction and looks for the optimal way of its financing. The aim of the article is to evaluate how much the house construction costs would increase in the case of the use of materials, which production generates smaller volume of negative emissions. The issue of the environment in relation to ecological construction has been widely discussed in recent years. The construction industry burdens the environment already by the production of building materials, extraction of raw materials, energy consumption, through designing activities and construction itself, to the phase of the building use and its eventual liquidation. There are six basic requirements for building materials used in construction, which are required for the quality environmentally friendly construction: the statics and stability of buildings must be provided, noise protection, fire safety, hygienic safety and reduced environmental impact must be met, buildings must provide safe use and well-being, and last but not least energy efficiency. Already in the structure construction phase, it is necessary to consider the appropriate selection of building materials, for which it is necessary to take into account ecological criteria. Appropriate selection of building materials results in a positive effect on the environment. When optimizing the total cost of building a detached house from an ecological point of view, the procedure consists in replacing the most cost-effective items in the construction budget by alternative materials with regard to ecology. When choosing alternative materials, maintaining the standard of the brick building and the aesthetic character of the house are taken into account. When comparing the budgets of both variants, it was found out that a detached house built using alternative, more environmentally friendly materials, resulted more expensive. However, the price difference is slight. Own housing can be financed in several ways. One option is to use your resources. However, this method is currently unrealistic for most people, and therefore they often choose the option of combining their resources with external sources. The most commonly used products for housing financing are building savings loans and mortgage loans. Another possibility is to use subsidy programmes for housing to finance the house, which are often focused on supporting ecological construction and housing.

Abstract: A house is a basic need for every human’s life. It is not only a place for shelter, but also a place for a family to live, to have social interaction between them, to raise the children, and to give the values of life. Padma Residence is a modern residence which is built by PT. Surya Coco Jaya. Most of its residents make changes to their houses after they occupy it. The main purpose of this study is to observe changes toward the initial design by comparing the initial design and present condition, recording the present condition of the house when it has occupied by determine architectural elements which are changed, determining causal factors of changes, and finding out dominant causal factors toward alteration of architectural elements of the house at Padma Residence, Bantul, Yogyakarta while it is occupied. Methods used in data collecting are literature study and a field survey. A field survey includes observation, interview, and distributing questionnaires to 25 respondents who are the owners of houses in this residence. Data analysis used table which compare the initial design and nowadays condition. The result of data processing and analyzing reveals that the owners do physical changes at their houses while they occupy them, particularly at the front appearance of the house. The changes include the addition of canopies at carport and changes in the layout of the rooms, such as kitchen, dining room, and backyard. A dominant factor which has caused those changes is the function of rooms which is added to the house.Keywords: residence, physical changes, the additon of functionAbstrak : Rumah merupakan kebutuhan utama bagi kehidupan setiap manusia. Selain sebagai tempat untuk berlindung, rumah juga merupakan wadah atau tempat manusia atau sebuah keluarga melangsungkan kehidupannya. Perumahan Padma Residence merupakan sebuah hunian modern yang dibangun PT. Surya Coco Jaya dan sebagian besar penghuninya melakukan perubahan pada rumah tinggalnya saat ditempati. Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah mengetahui perubahan terhadap desain awal rumah tinggal dan kondisi rumah tinggal tersebut saat ditempati dengan mengetahui unsur-unsur arsitektural yang berubah pada desain rumah tinggal saat ditempati di Perumahan Padma Residence, Bantul, Yogyakarta. Metode penelitian dilakukan dengan studi literatur dan survei lapangan. Survei lapangan meliputi pengamatan, wawancara, dan penyebaran kuesioner kepada 25 responden yang merupakan pemilik rumah tinggal di perumahan tersebut. Hasil dari pengolahan dan analisis data menunjukkan bahwa pemilik rumah melakukan perubahan fisik pada rumah tinggalnya saat ditempati, terutama pada tampilan depan bangunan, perubahan yang dilakukan adalah menambahkan kanopi pada carport, peletakan ruang seperti dapur, ruang makan, dan taman belakang. Faktor-faktor yang menjadi penyebab perubahan tersebut adalah pertambahan fungsi ruang.Kata kunci: rumah tinggal, perubahan fisik, pertambahan fungsi

Due to unprecedented urbanization, UAE had built many new residential projects with poor choices of material and ventilation. This social phenomenon is leading UAE to Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) faster than any other countries. The Dubai Municipality regulates the indoor air quality with strict stipulation, but the detailed regulations are still insufficient. The objective of this paper is to measure the indoor air quality of new residential projects in Dubai to suggest the improvement of the regulations for indoor air quality. As a methodology, a field survey was conducted to investigate the status of indoor air pollution in residential buildings. Based on the field survey data, lab experiments for building materials were conducted and a computer simulation on radon gas was conducted. The result had shown that radon gas was mainly detected in new townhouses and labor camp houses, and its concentration was found to exceed the standard. Volatile organic solvents (VOCs) and formaldehyde (CH2O) were mainly detected in showhouses and new townhouses, and the concentration distribution was about 10 times higher than that of outdoors. It was proven that emission concentration of radon gas from various building materials were detected, and the order was red clay, gypsum board, and concrete. Volatile organic solvents (VOCs) are mainly detected in oil paints and PVC floor and the radiation amount of all pollutants increased with temperature increase. In computer simulation, it was found that a new townhouse needs a grace period from 20 days to 6 months to lower the radon gas concentration by 2 pCi/L. This study will serve as a basic data to establish more detailed regulation for the building materials and improve the IAQ standards in Dubai.

The purpose of this study is to propose a simplified environmental impact assessment method based on selection of major building materials for school buildings in Korea. To accomplish this, environmental impact of 2 school buildings constructed in Korea was assessed according to the procedure of life cycle assessment. In addition, major building materials of school buildings were selected from the perspective of 6 environmental impact categories based on the assessment result, and a method of simplified environmental impact assessment was suggested. On one hand, case analysis verified applicability of the simplified environmental impact assessment method proposed in this study by showing similar value within 10% compared to the assessment result from existing detailed assessment.

Eduard Herriot 98. 06200 Nice E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Keywords: French Riviera, Urban Fabrics, Urban Form Recognition, Geoprocessing Conference topics and scale: Tools of analysis in urban morphology     Recent metropolitan growth produces new kinds of urban fabric, revealing different logics in the organization of urban space, but coexisting with more traditional urban fabrics in central cities and older suburbs. Having an overall view of the spatial patterns of urban fabrics in a vast metropolitan area is paramount for understanding the emerging spatial organization of the contemporary metropolis. The French Riviera is a polycentric metropolitan area of more than 1200 km2 structured around the old coastal cities of Nice, Cannes, Antibes and Monaco. XIX century and early XX century urban growth is now complemented by modern developments and more recent suburban areas. A large-scale analysis of urban fabrics can only be carried out through a new geoprocessing protocol, combining indicators of spatial relations within urban fabrics, geo-statistical analysis and Bayesian data-mining. Applied to the French Riviera, nine families of urban fabrics are identified and correlated to the historical periods of their production. Central cities are thus characterized by the combination of different families of pre-modern, dense, continuous built-up fabrics, as well as by modern discontinuous forms. More interestingly, fringe-belts in Nice and Cannes, as well as the techno-park of Sophia-Antipolis, combine a spinal cord of connective artificial fabrics having sparse specialized buildings, with the already mentioned discontinuous fabrics of modern urbanism. Further forms are identified in the suburban and “rurban” spaces around central cities. The proposed geoprocessing procedure is not intended to supersede traditional expert-base analysis of urban fabric. Rather, it should be considered as a complementary tool for large urban space analysis and as an input for studying urban form relation to socioeconomic phenomena. Construction is growing rapidly nowadays. Buildings, housing, industry/business centers and highways will require natural aggregates which are natural resources that cannot be renewed. Therefore, we need replacement materials able to replace these natural aggregate. The large amount of plastic waste in fields, based on existing data, causes environmental pollution through it can be reused and useful for building and road construction. Most of communities don’t even know the plastic waste processing technology that allow their use in the construction of house construction such as floors, walls, roofs, and hinges and also road construction with not heavy road loads. The purpose of this activity is to provide the knowledge to the people of RPTRA related to technology for the use of plastic waste for building materials and also road construction in the area in the RPTRA environment considering it is not a public road and hence, with not heavy vehicle. The method used is firstly observation and interview of several houses visited. Then activities about using different types of plastic waste as construction materials. Finally, evaluation of the progress of the project by conducting a survey to people who had met the criteria of being a member of the plastic waste program. The success of this program will be the people’s understanding and a significate growing of any highvalue plastic use as construction material. The benefit of this community service is to increase the knowledge and insight of the people of RPTRA, South Meruya, and West Jakarta City, related to environmentally friendly technologies such as plastic waste processing.

This chapter aims to discuss concepts and methods to measure the landscape resilience of urban systems and test the indicators framework in the Portuguese regional context. The objective is to measure the performance and the direction of the urban changes in different phenomena, as well as to evaluate the level of urban systems preparation for a desired and undesired change adaptability. The approach to these issues is analyzed in the literature, dividing the aforementioned analysis into the resilience of the economic base, of the social structure, and of the urban form. In brief, the chapter meets three objectives: firstly, defining the framework of principles more commonly associated with urban resilience; secondly, providing a selection of indicators that embodies the different proposals of measurement; and thirdly, applying the indicator matrix to two Portuguese case studies (Caldas da Rainha and Évora urban systems).

Comparative study of Ciung Wanara traffic island in Gianyar with Satrya Gatotkaca traffic island In Tuban. Traffic island is an island in the middle of the road that serves to direct the flow of traffic and a waiting place for the user to cross the road. Traffic island of Ciung Wanara in Gianyar and Traffic island of Satrya Gatotkaca in Tuban had turned their function of being a place of recreation for the community. The purpose of this study is to invent existing condition of Ciung Wanara and Satrya Gatotkaca traffic island. This study also provides recommendations in the form of designs that can improve the function of the site. The method used in this research was field survey by conducting observation, distributing questioner and doing interview. Research showed that, users in Ciung Wanara traffic island were dominated by student while users who came to the traffic island Satrya Gatotkaca were dominated by employees. The selection of vegetation bettwen the traffic island of Ciung Wanara and traffic island of Satrya Gatotkaca very different. Vegetation in the traffic island of Ciung Wanara used more of large size vegetation that can block the view of the user of the vehicle, while the vegetation used in the traffic island of Satrya Gatotkaca use lower plants size. The recommendation given in both locations was to add access to traffic island of Ciung Wanara so as to make easier for users to find the right place to cross, while traffic island of Satrya Gatotkaca was arraged it crossing space for more convenient and secure for users to passed the crosswalk.
