This article explores communication strategies in negotiating the cultural identity of Javanese-Muslims as immigrant communities in Bali. Identity negotiation theory guides this article into the construction of intercultural communication strategies. The qualitative approach is used to analyze the negotiation process between the identity that occurs, what elements of identity are involved, as well as what identity factors have an impact on communication in a harmonious life, especially among the immigrant population (Java-Muslim) and indigenous people (Bali-Hindu) in Wanasari Hamlet, Denpasar City, Bali. The results of this study showed the opportunity for each group of residents to teach their own beliefs, as well as put forward equality over differences in the creation of harmonious community life.

Within the discipline of communication, the concept of “cultural identities” has captivated, fascinated, and received sustained attention from scholars of communication and culture over time. Like the concept of “culture,” which is varied, complex, and at times contested, the study of cultural identity has been approached from diverse lenses, whether theoretically, methodologically, or ontologically. In one sense, cultural identity can be understood as the experience, enactment, and negotiation of dynamic social identifications by group members within particular settings. As an individual identifies with—or desires acceptance into—multiple groups, people tend to experience, enact, or negotiate not just one cultural identity at a time but often multiple cultural identities at once. Further, how one experiences her/his intersecting cultural identities with others can vary from context to context depending on the setting, the issue at hand, the people involved, etc. Not surprisingly, intercultural communication scholars have contributed quite a number of theories concerning cultural identities within communication interactions: co-cultural theory, cultural contract theory, and identity negotiation theory, to name a few. In addition, intercultural communication scholars have offered rich cases that examine dynamic enactments, negotiations, or contestations of cultural identities across important contexts such as race, media, and globalization. Ultimately, the study of cultural identities offers rich understandings for both oneself and others. As the world that we inhabit is becoming increasingly diverse, the study of cultural identities will continue to gain traction within the communication discipline and beyond.

Malay identity is the most dominant cultural identity in Bangka Belitung that still holds their strength of local wisdom even though modernization, afforded by tin mining and palm oil exploration, is emerging around them.  One of the original Malay people in Bangka Belitung is the Jerieng community. This study is aimed to identify negotiations on the boundaries of the cultural identity of the Jerieng community in West Bangka Regency. This study used the theory of identity building from Manuel Castells and subculture theory. This study also employs a descriptive qualitative approach intended to describe the common symptoms associated with the distribution of Malay culture in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province, especially the Jerieng community. In this study, ten informants were interviewed, consisting of the six elders and four from the younger generation. The locations of this research were Ibul Village, Pelangas Village, and Kundi Village, West Bangka Regency, which was the Jerieng community area. The study results showed that the Jerieng community had a way of maintaining the cultural identity by maintaining the values and norms of their ancestral heritage and harmony between people, the environment, and the natural environment. Meeting with culture outside made the Jerieng community negotiate their identity to form the construction of surviving, changing, identity, and negotiating cultural identity. The Jerieng community’s identity was still maintained, including a pilgrimage to sacred tombs, mountain alms, circumcision, and language dialects, while the Jerieng community identity has changed, including village charity, traditional clothing, prayer during the Prophet’s birthday, and rituals of spells. Furthermore, the identity of the Jerieng community, including custom clothing and jewelry, language dialects, and the marriage system, is applied through the negotiation process by continuing to carry out some traditions or cultures considered still relevant to people’s lives at this time.

The research attempts to examine the crisis of Madurese cultural identity exposure in intercultural communication in Sampit (Central Borneo Province) after the 2001 ethnic conflict which involved two major ethnic groups i.e the Dayak ethnic (native community) and Madurese ethnic (migrant community). Using base descriptive qualitative approach by interviewing numerous Madurese people living in Sampit and using literature review. The research reveals that affected the formation of cultural identity among the residents of Sampit of Madurese descent. This Cultural identity experienced a crisis and change, because not in accordance with the value of local culture. In other hands, the research found that cultural identities of Madurese are strengthened. It arises because of conformity and mutual support with local cultural values. Understanding to intercultural communication is very important to create acculturation with local culture to avoid problems due to cultural differences, especially for newcomers from the Madura Island.

Pengkalan Kuras, Langgam, Kuala Kampar, and Bunut Subdistrict, Pelalawan Regency. Petalangan tribe has various cultures in the traditions of life. A good introduction to cultural heritage by the next generation can strengthen the nation's tradition in responding to the increasingly severe challenges of the future in this era of globalization. Cultural heritage in the form of moral-spiritual inheritance, one of which is obtained and known through the tradition of belief in the traditional proverb that exists in the community. The traditional adage in the Petalangan community, among others, explains the perspective on community life. This study aims to describe the style of language in the customary proverb that is related to the perspective of life in society. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis method. The data source used was the book entitled Pepatah Adat, Istilah, dan Kosa kata Masyarakat Petalangan Kabupaten Pelalawan, Riau. There are 16 traditional proverbs used as data in this study, which then obtained 3 language styles based on sentence structure and 2 language styles based on meaning. By knowing and learning the style of language in this traditional proverb, the philosophy of life and aesthetic tastes of the people of Riau can be understood. Petalangan merupakan salah satu puak asli di Provinsi Riau yang bermukim di Kecamatan Pengkalan Kuras, Langgam, Kuala Kampar, dan Bunut, Kabupaten Pelalawan. Suku Petalangan ini memiliki beraneka kebudayaan dalam kehidupan. Pengenalan yang baik terhadap warisan kebudayaan oleh generasi penerus dapat memperteguh tradisi bangsa dalam menjawab tantangan masa depan yang semakin berat dalam era globalisasi ini. Warisan kebudayaan yang berupa warisan moral-spiritual, satu di antaranya didapatkan dan diketahui keyakinan terhadap pepatah adat yang ada pada masyarakat. Pepatah adat dalam masyarakat Petalangan antara lain menjelaskan cara pandang mengenai hidup bermasyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan gaya bahasa di dalam pepatah adat yang berhubungan dengan cara pandang dalam hidup bermasyarakat. Penelitian ini menggunakanpendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis deskriptif. Sumber data yang digunakan adalah buku Pepatah Adat, Istilah, dan Kosa kata Masyarakat Petalangan Kabupaten Pelalawan, Riau. Terdapat 16 pepatah adat yang dijadikan data dalam penelitian ini, yang kemudian diperoleh 3 gaya bahasa berdasarkan struktur kalimat dan 2 gaya bahasa berdasarkan makna. Dengan mengetahui dan mempelajari gaya bahasa dalam pepatah adat ini dapat dipahami filsafat hidup dan cita rasa estetika masyarakat Riau.

Cuando estudiaba comunicación, en la compleja Cali colombiana de los noventa, Alex Gómez comenzó a documentar diferentes realidades, diferentes culturas, diferentes estilos de vida. Los trabajos que realizó con indígenas y comunidades afrocolombianas, varios de los cuales siguen siendo emitidos en la televisión de su país, lo marcaron profundamente. Luego de trabajar en producción televisiva, estudió una maestría en educación en España y desde hace algún tiempo vive en Estados Unidos, país que le ha permitido continuar con su pasión: la comunicación intercultural. Desde su empresa, dirige documentales, con la misma tónica: comunicar la diversidad, comunicar para la diversidad, comunicar para la interculturalidad. Palabras clave: comunicación intercultural, identidad cultural, educación, producción audiovisual, documentales.He is passionate about audiovisual documentaries. Alex Gómez began to record different realities, cultures and lifestyles already when he was a media scholar in the complex city of Cali during the 1990's. The research aimed to examine (1) the anxiety experienced by Pattani Students when they first mingled with Kembangarum residents, (2) the anxiety management used by Pattani Students, (3) the model of intercultural communication between Pattani students and Kembangarum residents. The type of the research used in this study is a case study. While the approach was qualitative approach. Data collection techniques used were in-depth interviews and participatory observation. The subject of the study is Pattani students and Kembangarum residents. The findings showed there was a cultural shock experienced by Pattani students when they first lived in Kembangarum. The cultural shock resulted in anxiety and uncertainty when they communicate with the locals. To overcome this anxiety, Pattani students used Gudykunst’s three anxiety management, those are the self-concept, motivation and, reaction to the locals. The communication model used by Pattani students was intercultural approaches by prioritizing dialectics and interpretation of community behavior.

The aim of the study is to examine communication strategies employed by the Polish and Czech speakers when communicating with each other in their native languages. In particular, the analysis refers to receptive intercultural communication. The material under investigation covers audio and visual recordings of semi-spontaneous dialogues. The pragmalinguistic research investigates the strategies which help achieve mutual intelligibility when using lingua receptiva. The findings prove how significant pragmatic aspects are when it comes to successful receptive intercultural communication.

CPNS lecturers in 2019 at Universitas Terbuka were placed in the head office or in various UPBJJ spreading throughout Indonesia. Some CPNS lecturers are placed in different units from their original regions so they have to make adjustments in the new environments with different cultures. Intercultural communication takes place when there is interaction between an individual with a particular cultural background and other individuals who come from different cultures. Intercultural communication is an important key in the adjustment process. This study explores the adaptation of three UT CPNS lecturers from outside the region. The theory used is Anxiety Uncertainty Management Theory. Descriptive qualitative approach is used to explore the perspective of CPNS lecturers with the local culture. Through this research, the researcher found that there were some important elements that needed to be possessed by CPNS lecturers, namely the cultural adaptation that was carried out, the culture shock that occurred, and the adjustment in the new cultural environment.
