The Pherocon Ic trap captured the greatest number of Cydia caryana (Fitch) adult males and all trap designs appeared to represent population trends equally well. Pooled data from all trap height experiments indicate that traps placed 9.14 m above the orchard floor captured significantly more adult males than those placed at 4.57 m height. Horizontal placement of traps within the tree canopy indicated a significantly greater capture in the central portion of the canopy than at other locations. Correlations between the total capture of male adults and the rate of fruit infestation were not significant.

Lactate is a product of anaerobic glycolysis, used in animal research as an indicator of muscle fatigue. Therefore, it has been used as an indicator of cattle response to long distance transportation. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship of L-lactate concentrations measured using a Lactate Scout+ analyzer and a traditional lactate assay colorimetric kit. Blood samples were collected by venipuncture from 96 steers (Black or Red Angus × Hereford/Simmental and Black or Red Angus × Charolais; 247 ± 38.2 kg BW) prior to loading (LO1) and after 36 h of transport, and prior to reloading and after an additional 4 h of road transportation, and on d 1, 2, 3, 5, 14, and 28 after transport. The Lactate Scout+ analyzer strip was dipped in blood at the time of sampling, while blood samples were collected into sodium fluoride tubes for use in the colorimetric analysis. Pearson correlations were calculated to assess the strength of the relationship between the experimental methods for the quantification of L-lactate concentrations. The magnitude and direction of the correlation, and the level of statistical significance varied over the observed time points, ranging from r = −0.03 (p = 0.75; LO1) to r = 0.75 (p < 0.0001; d 3). The correlation for the pooled data was weak but statistically significant (r = 0.33, p < 0.0001). Based on the low magnitude of the correlation due to variability across sampling time points in this study, the Lactate Scout+ analyzer is not a suitable alternative to a lab-based assay (considered the gold standard) for measuring L-lactate in transported cattle.

Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) social vocalizations (nonsong sounds) were clearly related to whale group size and surface activity. Social sounds occurred almost exclusively in groups containing three or more whales and were rarely heard near single whales, pairs, or cow–calf groups. Large groups (3 to 20 individuals) vocalized at an overall mean rate of 43.1 ± 55.52 sounds per whale/h. Group size changed frequently and a dramatic increase in vocalization rate resulted when a new whale entered a group. Large groups engaged in flurries of surface activity, such as breaching, flipper- and tail-slapping, and underwater bubbling. Aggressive encounters resulted from male–male interaction. Social sounds probably acted to demonstrate aggression or agitation as adult males competed for temporary social dominance within the group and for proximity to the female. Likewise, visual displays may have been used as threats in close quarters and were apparently produced in conjunction with sounds to convey levels of aggression. Although other studies suggested that surface activity increased with group size, I found a negative correlation between activity and group size, both in the group as a whole and per individual. In contrast, social vocalizations per group increased with group size while the vocalization rate per individual did not vary significantly with increasing group size.

A systematic examination of the effects of traditional herbal medicines including their mechanisms could allow for their effective use and provide opportunities to develop new medicines. Coix seed has been suggested to promote spontaneous regression of viral skin infection. Purified oil from coix seed has also been suggested to increase the peripheral CD4+ lymphocytes. We, herein, attempt to shed more light on the way through which coix seed affects the human systemic immune function by hypothesizing that a central role to these changes could be played through changes in the gut microbiota. To that end, healthy adult males (n = 19) were divided into two groups; 11 of them consumed cooked coix seed (160 g per day) for 7 days (intervention), while the other eight were given no intervention. One week of coix seed consumption lead to an increase of the intestinal Faecalibacterium abundance and of the abundance (as % presence of overall peripheral lymphocytes) of CD3+CD8+ cells, CD4+ cells, CD4+CD25+ cells, and naïve/memory T cell ratio. As the relationship of microbiota and skin infection has not been clarified, our findings could provide a clue to a mechanism through which coix seed could promote the spontaneous regression of viral skin infections.

Gondwanoscurus Jezek (Psychodidae: Psychodinae) is revised to include seven species. Gondwanoscurus cruciferus sp. nov. and G. ornithostylus sp. nov. from Thailand are described. Three described species are transferred from Telmatoscopus Eaton to Gondwanoscurus: G. ejundicus (Quate), G. eximius (Quate) and G. praecipuus (Quate). The adult male and female of G. ejundicus and G. mcclurei (Quate) and the adult male of G. eximius and G. praecipuus are redescribed. Keys to adult males of the seven known species and females of the four species for which they are known are provided, and the relationship of Gondwanoscurus to other Paramormiine genera is discussed.

Trees canopy as ecosystem services provided pleasantness activity for motorcycle rider broad daylight. This study was analysed of role thees canopy and drivers response at Mataram sub-district intersection. This study was carried out using the  expost pasto approach with examining the relationship of more than one free variable (extensive and criteria of threes canopy) to the comfort and level of traffic light violations at the Mataram Sub-district intersection. Results of this study indicate that tree canopies provide a pleasantness of driving and orderly traffic lights. The tree canopy at Gubernuran intersection with shady criteria, this area of the canopy covering the entire road body has a level of comfort of motorbike riders around 74.4% with a relatively small number of violations about 95.33. Whereas the Pasar Pagutan intersection has open tree canopy criteria, the motorbike driver's pleasantness response is about 62.5% the average number of violations 177. Therefore, existence of a tree canopy around the crossroads has the effect of driving comfort thereby reducing the level of violation of traffic signs.

AbstractThe relationship of pheromone trap catch to emergence and oviposition of the codling moth was defined for the two-generation climate of Michigan. Catch anticipated emergence and oviposition during spring flight when the trap displayed greatest efficiency, but lagged behind emergence and closely followed oviposition during the second generation. Trapping efficiency declined towards the end of the first generation and was generally lower during summer flight. Factors which possibly relate to this efficiency loss are discussed. First catch and the catch peaks in both generations were evaluated as reference points for the prediction of phenological events (particularly egg hatch) in both generations Of four forecasting methods, degree day and developmental unit summations, starting from first catch, for the preoviposition and incubation period were most reliable in predicting the beginning of spring brood egg hatch.
