Lactate is a product of anaerobic glycolysis, used in animal research as an indicator of muscle fatigue. Therefore, it has been used as an indicator of cattle response to long distance transportation. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship of L-lactate concentrations measured using a Lactate Scout+ analyzer and a traditional lactate assay colorimetric kit. Blood samples were collected by venipuncture from 96 steers (Black or Red Angus × Hereford/Simmental and Black or Red Angus × Charolais; 247 ± 38.2 kg BW) prior to loading (LO1) and after 36 h of transport, and prior to reloading and after an additional 4 h of road transportation, and on d 1, 2, 3, 5, 14, and 28 after transport. The Lactate Scout+ analyzer strip was dipped in blood at the time of sampling, while blood samples were collected into sodium fluoride tubes for use in the colorimetric analysis. Pearson correlations were calculated to assess the strength of the relationship between the experimental methods for the quantification of L-lactate concentrations. The magnitude and direction of the correlation, and the level of statistical significance varied over the observed time points, ranging from r = −0.03 (p = 0.75; LO1) to r = 0.75 (p < 0.0001; d 3). The correlation for the pooled data was weak but statistically significant (r = 0.33, p < 0.0001). Based on the low magnitude of the correlation due to variability across sampling time points in this study, the Lactate Scout+ analyzer is not a suitable alternative to a lab-based assay (considered the gold standard) for measuring L-lactate in transported cattle.

Abstract Blood metabolites are used to assess a variety of animal conditions for veterinary diagnosis and research. Concentration of metabolites in blood can be measured using a commercially-available lab-based assay or in real-time using a handheld device developed to be more time- and cost-effective than the lab-based method. Residency is a high-risk period for physician burnout. We aimed to determine the short-term stability of factors associated with burnout, application of these data to previous conceptual models, and the relationship of these factors over 3 months. Physician wellness questionnaire results were analyzed at 2 time points 3 months apart. Associations among variables within and across time points were analyzed. Logistic regression was used to predict burnout and compassionate care. A total of 74% of residents completed surveys. Over 3 months, burnout ( P = .005) and empathy ( P = .04) worsened. The most significant cross-sectional relationship was between stress and emotional exhaustion (time 1 r = 0.61, time 2 r = 0.68). Resilience was predictive of increased compassionate care and decreased burnout ( P < .05). Mindfulness was predictive of decreased burnout ( P < .05). Mitigating stress and fostering mindfulness and resilience longitudinally may be key areas of focus for improved wellness in pediatric residents. Larger studies are needed to better develop targeted wellness interventions.

In the present time the impact of technological progress can be felt in many aspects of life, including marriage. The progress of the development of communication technology has made it easy to communicate specifically for married couples who are undergoing long-distance marital relationships, so that the relationship is maintained and harmonious. Social media is now used as a tool for communication, for example WhatsApp, Line, Facebook, or Instagram. All of those media are used because of their speed in conveying messages, so that long-distance couples can still communicate well and quickly. In a marital relationship, of course, there are fulfillments of rights and obligations. These fulfillments can still be fulfilled through social media, but they are not as maximized as when dealing directly.

Background: The occurrence of serious problems in children's mental development, that children will become aggressive, lack of social interaction and deteriorating of communication skills, is affected by the introduction of gadgets too early and the intensity of uncontrolled use of gadgets by parents. Aim of this study is to determine the relationship between pragmatic ability and social interaction with the intensity of using gadgets in kindergarten children in Surakarta.  Methods: This research was conducted in the kindergarden TK ABA Thoyibah Surakarta, TK Sri Juwita Hanum Surakarta dan TK Negeri Pembina city of Surakarta in april until august 2020. Sample conduct using total sampling technique. Amount of sample is 115 students of kindergarden. The relationship of the variables studied, both pragmatic ability and social interaction with the intensity of using gadgets, is an Odds Ratio (OR), which is exponential from b, the statistical significance of the Odds Ratio is tested with mannova.  Results: The results of the analysis of the pragmatic ability variable showed that Exp B: 2,916, p: 0,420. The results of the social interaction variable analysis showed that Exp B: 2,977, p: 0.011.  Conclusion: Pragmatic ability and social intensity are jointly related to the intensity of using gadgest in kindergarten students in Surakarta, with the results of the analysis of the variable pragmatic ability Exp B: 2,916, p: 0,420 and the results of the analysis of social interaction variables Exp B: 2,977, p: 0.011.

AbstractThe statistical relationships of total COVID-19 Cases and Deaths per million populations in 45 countries, where 85.8% of the world’s population lives with 10 demographic, economic and social indicators were studied. Data for 28 May 2020 were used in the main calculations. The relationship of Deaths per million population and total Cases per million population is very close and reaches correlation coefficient R = 0.926. It is interesting that the close correlations were found of Cases and Deaths per 1 million with a purely economic index like GDP PPP per capita, where R = 0.687 and R = 0.660, respectively. Even more close correlations were found of Cases and Deaths per 1 million with a composite index HDI, where the correlation coefficients reach 0.724 and 0.680, respectively. The main reason for these paradoxical results is the underestimation of pandemic restrictions in the form of masks, social distance and disinfection in most of these countries. Other indicators (excluding Gini index and Population Density) also show statistically significant correlations with Cases and Deaths per 1 million with correlation coefficients from 0.432 to 0.634. The statistical significance of the found correlations determined using Student’s t-test was p <0.0001. Surprisingly, there was no statistically significant correlation between Cases and Deaths with Population Density. To check whether there is a change in the correlations with the development of the pandemic, a statistical analysis was made for four different dates – 9 April, 28 May, 7 August and 30 November 2020. It was found that the correlation coefficients of COVID-19 cases and Deaths with the rest indicators decrease during the pandemic.

AbstractThere have been long questions about the relationship of schizophrenia to other mental disorders. Lifetime DSM-III-R diagnoses of mood and anxiety disorders in twins with clinically diagnosed schizophrenia (n = 24) and their non-affected co-twins (n = 24) were compared with twins from pairs without schizophrenia (n = 3327) using a sample from the Vietnam Era Twin Registry. Schizophrenic probands had significantly elevated rates of all included disorders (bipolar disorder, major depression, dysthymia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and PTSD) compared with controls (P < 0.01). The odd ratios comparing co-twins of schizophrenic probands with controls was greater than three for every disorder, but did not attain statistical significance. A similar pattern was observed when analyses were restricted to only monozygotic twins (n = 12). Consistent with other studies, schizophrenics appeared to have higher rates of a range of mental disorders. Our results suggest that schizophrenia per se represents a risk factor for other psychiatric disorders, but the absence of significantly elevated risk among non-schizophrenic co-twins suggested that family environmental and/or genetic factors that contribute to risk of schizophrenia do not increase the risk of mood and anxiety disorders to the same extent that the risk of these other disorders is increased by the presence of schizophrenia. Rotter's hypothesis that internals show more typical shifts in expectancies (increase in expectancies following success or decrease in expectancies following failure) was tested after some refinements in his formulation of the locus of control construct were made. 100 subjects were administered Internal-External, Perceived Competence, and Origin-Pawn scales. Then, 50 subjects were given the choice to take an anagrams task (free condition), and 50 subjects were required to participate (forced condition). Using a multiple regression procedure, the findings were that internal subjects tended to show more typical changes in expectancy than external ones in the free condition, but the results did not achieve statistical significance. Contrary to Rotter's hypothesis, in the forced condition external subjects showed more typical shifts in expectancy than internal subjects. The findings, in general, did not support Rotter's theory concerning the relationship of individual differences in locus of control beliefs to typical shifts in expectancies.

To determine the effects of laminated root rot (Phellinusweirii) on Douglas-fir (Pseudotsugamenziesii (Mirb.) Franco) foliar chemistry, chlorophyll a and b, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, and foliage moisture were measured in new and old foliage from 20- to 80-year-old coastal Douglas-fir. Measurements were made in June and September of 1993 and June of 1994. Chlorophyll a and b, Ca, Fe, Mg, and Mn were higher in old foliage in both June and September, while moisture, N, and K were higher in the new foliage. The relationship of P to foliage age changed with time. Reductions in foliage moisture, chlorophyll a, and N were consistently associated with P. weirii infection in all plots, but the normal high variability in foliage chemistry made demonstration of statistical significance difficult. Within-tree variability in foliar chemistry was much higher in June than in September, especially in the new foliage.

Introduction: Chagas’ disease lacks elements to predict which carriers will evolve into cardiac form and which will remain in undetermined form. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between electrocardiographic evolution and Tpeak–Tend and QT intervals, both corrected for heart rate, in chagasic patients with normal initial electrocardiogram. Method: Chagasic patients admitted to the institution until 2002 were retrospectively evaluated, and the electrocardiogram was normal at the first consultation. The Tpeak–Tend and QT intervals were measured in milliseconds at the V2 and V5 derivations, with the mean values corrected for heart rate (Bazett). The relationship of these values with the electrocardiographic evolution of the individuals was analyzed, considering the gender, time of evolution and whether they received benznidazole or not. Results: The corrected Tpeak–Tend interval showed no statistical significance among those who maintained or not normal electrocardiogram. The corrected QT interval, the treatment with benznidazole and the time of evolution showed significance for the maintenance of normal electrocardiogram. In the multivariate evaluation, treatment with benznidazole, the QTc interval and the time of evolution were independent variables for the maintenance of normal electrocardiogram. Conclusion: The Tpeak–Tend interval showed no predictor of electrocardiographic evolution. The increased QT interval favored changes.
