Assessment of the condition of the alveolar bone is important for the choice of treatment methods for many types of pathology of the dentoalveolar system. The aim of the study was to identify morphofunctional disorders and changes in the optical density of bone tissue of the alveolar process of the maxilla and the alveolar part of the mandible arising from the effects of chronic odontogenic foci of infection. Material and methods. Histological examination of the edges of the alveoli of the removed teeth was carried out in 40 patients with chronic forms of periodontitis. Bony fragments were removed on medical reasons for the prevention of postextraction pain. Decalcification was carried out in Trilon B solution, microtome tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The density of bone tissue was determined on the intraoral radiovisiograms of the removed teeth and intact teeth in 80 persons of the control group. Results. It is established that with chronic forms of periodontitis under the periosteum of the alveolar processes (parts), osteoclastic resorption occurs either in the plane of the bone or with the formation of gauchepic lacunae. The channels of the osteons and the folkman channels widen, and in their circles there are also foci of resorption. Appear pycnosis of osteocytes and extensive areas with empty and dilated osseous lacunae. In the zones of osteolysis, either connective or coarse-fibrous bone tissue is formed. The optical density of bone tissue in patients is significantly less than in individuals with intact teeth. Conclusions. Toxins from chronic odontogenic foci of infection activate the processes of bone resorption of the alveolar process (part) of the jaws and inhibit reparative osteogenesis. The resulting rarefaction of bone tissue leads to a decrease in its optical density.

Introduction. Osteoporosis is a very common disorder of skeleton, which can be caused by various metabolic disturbances, malnutrition, immobilization, endocrine disorders, bone marrow diseases, connective tissue disorders, and, in some cases, by inappropriate therapy. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the relationships between the mineral content in the alveolar bone and serum osteoporosis in chosen patients. Material and methods. The study included an experimental and a control group of patients who were submitted to internal and prosthodontic therapy. The plan of therapy was to extract anticipated parodonthopathic teeth, taking samples of the alveolar bone and its analysis by spectrometry. At the same time the biochemical analyses of the blood were performed. Results. Before the therapy, due to negative remodeling, values of mineral content in decalcified bone tissue and serum were significantly lower than in the control group. After the therapy, the quality of the bone tissue was improved, with increased contents of mineral substances. Discussion and conclusion. Disorders of mineral metabolism are very important for osteoporosis. This disorder may involve entire skeleton, especially stomatoghnatic complex. Therefore osteoporosis is one of very important illnesses in dentistry, especially in prosthodontics, because of the supporting nature of bone tissue for all types of dental prostheses.

The aim of the study was to conduct a comparative assessment of the optical density of bone tissue of the alveolar process of the jaws of rats in supraocclusive relationships of individual teeth in the age aspect. Materials and methods: The study was performed on 60 white laboratory rats. Rats were divided into control (30 individuals) and experimental (30 individuals) groups. According to the age of rats each group was divided into 3 subgroups (10 animals): young, mature and senile. In the experimental group, the state of supraocclusion was modeled by increasing the height of the lower right second molars placing a seal 1 mm high. Experimental animals were removed from the experiment on the 15th day through decapitation. The lower jaws were skeletonized, jaw blocks were sawn in the molar area. Bone mineral density was determined using optical densitometry. The statistical processing defined the average (M) and its error (m). The statistical significance of the difference in two independent groups was performed according to nonparametric criteria (Mann-Whitney U-test and W-Wilcoxon test). Statistical processing was conducted with the help of integrated package of statistical program AtteStat 12.0.5 for MS Excel. Differences at p≤ 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Statistical discrepancy is present in rats of mature and senile age, as well as between the indicators of all rats of the control and experimental groups (≤0.05). No significant difference was observed in young rats, but the indicators of the experimental group were 3.82% worse than in the control group. In senile rats, the density of the alveolar process decreased by 26.6%, in adult rats by 17.5%. Conclusions: The presence of supraocclusive relationships of individual teeth causes a decrease in bone density of the alveolar process of the jaws in rats. The greatest loss of density among age groups in elderly rats.

Background: Damage to bone tissue resulting from tooth extraction will cause alveolar bone resorption. Therefore, a material for preserving alveolar sockets capable of maintaining bone is required. Hydroxyapatite Gypsum Puger (HAGP) is a bio-ceramic material that can be used as an alternative material for alveolar socket preservation. The porous and rough surface of HAGP renders it a good medium for osteoblast cells to penetrate and attach themselves to. In general, bone mass is regulated through a remodeling process consisting of two phases, namely; bone formation by osteoblasts and bone resorption by osteoclasts. Purpose: This research aims to identify the effects of HAGP scaffold application on the number of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, as well as on the width of trabecular bone area in the alveolar sockets of rats. Methods: This research used Posttest Only Control Group Design. There were three research groups, namely: a group with 2.5% HAGP scaffold, a group with 5% HAGP scaffold and a group with 10% HAGP scaffold. The number of samples in each group was six. HAGP scaffold at concentrations of 2.5%, 5% and 10% was then mixed with PEG (Polyethylene Glycol). The Wistar rats were anesthetized intra-muscularly with 100 mg/ml of ketamine and 20 mg/ml of xylazine base at a ratio of 1:1 with a dose of 0.08-0.2 ml/kgBB. Extraction of the left mandibular incisor was performed before 0.1 ml preservation of HAGP scaffold + PEG material was introduced into the extraction sockets and suturing was performed. 7 days after preparation of the rat bone tissue, an Hematoxilin Eosin staining process was conducted in order that observation under a microscope could be performed. Results: There were significant differences in both the number of osteoclasts and osteoblasts between the 2.5% HAGP group, the 5% HAGP group and the 10% HAGP group (p = 0.000). Similarly, significant differences in the width of the trabecular bone area existed between the 5% HAGP group and the 10% HAGP group, as well as between the 2.5% HAGP group and the 10% HAGP group (p=0.000). In contrast, there was no significant difference in the width of the trabecular bone area between the 2.5% HAGP group and the 5% HAGP group. Conclusion: The application of HAGP scaffold can reduce osteoclasts, increase osteoblasts and extend the trabecular area in the alveolar bone sockets of rats.

Aim. To determine the optical density of the alveolar process bone tissue in normal conditions and during various forms of periodontal pathology. Methods. With the use of clinical and radiographic methods examined were 120 patients (with a healthy periodontium, with chronic generalized catarrhal gingivitis of moderate severity, with chronic periodontitis of a mild, moderate and severe degree). On the three-dimensional computer tomograms in each group of patients determined was the optical density of the alveolar process bone tissue from the medial and distal sides of the root of the following teeth 1.6, 1.7, 2.7, 2.6, 3.6, 3.7, 4.7, 4.6, 1.1, 3.1 (the teeth numbers have been recommended by the World Health Organization in order to determine the index of treatment needs of the periodontal disease), and studied were its changes depending on the severity of periodontal disease. Statistical analysis was performed using computer programs «Microsoft Excel», «Biostatistica». Results. In periodontal disease noted was a reduction in the optical density of bone tissue of the alveolar processes of the jaws with a firm relashionship with the severity of disease. In chronic generalized catarrhal gingivitis of moderate severity the optical bone density ranged from 40.445±1.264 to 633.744±5.226 arbitrary units, in mild forms of chronic generalized periodontitis - from -119.664±1.511 to 344.972±4.019, in moderate forms of chronic generalized periodontitis - from -232.589±3.088 to 203.841±1.604, in severe chronic generalized periodontitis - from -464.080±2.398 to -53.991±1.435 arbitrary units. Conclusion. Changes in optical density of bone tissue of the alveolar process of the jaws is an objective criterion for evaluating the status of periodontal tissues, an important diagnostic feature, which also makes it possible to predict the course of the disease and monitor the effectiveness of treatment.

Several materials and techniques have been proposed to improve alveolar wound healing and decrease loss of bone height and thickness that normally follow dental extraction. The objective of this research was the histologic analysis of bone morphogenetic proteins implanted into dental alveoli of rats after extraction. A total of 45 adult male Wistar rats were divided into three groups of 15 animals each: control (no treatment), implanted with pure hydroxyapatite (HA, 3 mg) and implanted with hydroxyapatite plus bone morphogenetic proteins (HA/BMPs, 3 mg). Five animals from each group were sacrificed at 7, 21 and 42 days after extraction for the histometric analyses of the osteoconductive potential of hydroxyapatite associated or not with BMPs. After dissection, fixation, decalcification and serial microtomy of 6-µm thick sections, the samples were stained with hematoxylin-eosin for histologic and histometric analyses. Both HA and HA/BMPs caused a delay in wound healing compared to control animals, evaluated by the percentage of bone tissue in the alveoli. The treatment with HA/BMPs had the greatest delay at 21 days, even though it produced values similar to the control group at 42 days. The materials did not improve alveolar repair in the normal period of wound healing and the association of HA/BMPs did not have osteoconductive properties with granulated hydroxyapatite as the vehicle.

The study involved an analysis of optical density of the maxillary and mandibular bone tissue based on cone-beam computed tomography data. It has been shown that the structure and bone tissue density depend on the severity of diabetes mellitus and complications. The results of the study revealed a significant decrease in the bone tissue optical density at the tooth necks in people suffering from diabetes mellitus, whereas fewer changes were manifested at the middle third of the dental roots. Minor changes or even an increase in the optical density were observed at the dental root tips.

Introduction. Nowadays, it is unclear what the trigger for bone resorption under the influence of chronic alcohol consumption is. As the reactions of conversion of ethanol into acetic acid are accompanied by an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species, it can be assumed that the formation of oxidative stress with prolonged alcohol consumption occurs in bone tissue as well. Aim. Research of the effect of chronic administration of ethanol to females and males laboratory rats on indices of resorption, osteogenesis, the condition of the antioxidant-prooxidant system in bone tissue. Materials and Methods. 2-month old animals received from 5 % to 15 % of ethanol in their drinking water with gradual increase of the concentration. The lower jaws were segregated, and the degree of atrophy of the alveolar process was calculated. The activity of elastase, acidic (AcF) and alkaline phosphatase (AlF), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione reductase and malonic dialdehyde (MDA) content were determined in the bone tissue homogenates. Results. Chronic alcohol consumption contributed to an increase in alveolar bone atrophy, increased activity of biochemical markers of bone resorption (elastase by 32.2 %, AcF – by 33.6 %), decreased osteogenesis (AlF activity by 32.4 %). Alcohol intoxication led to oxidative imbalance of bone tissue: a decrease in SOD activity by an average of 16.9 %, glutathione reductase activity by 36.2 %, increase in catalase activity by 35.9 % and an increase in MDA levels by 51.8 %. Conclusion. Chronic alcohol consumption stimulates atrophy of the alveolar process of the rat jaw, induces oxidative imbalance in bone tissue, which can be a trigger pathogenetic factor in further development of resorption pro-inflammatory processes in bone tissue and inhibition of bone formation.

Background. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells capable of differentiation in the osteogenic, chondrogenic, and adipogenic directions that are widely used in the development of new cellular biomedical technologies. Aim. We investigated the effect of MSCs on osteogenesis in the congenital defect of the alveolar process of the upper jaw with the aim of improving the treatment results for children with congenital cleft palate. Materials and methods. At the department of maxillofacial surgery of the Turner Institute for Children’s Orthopedics, 46 patients with a diagnosis of congenital cleft palate were observed in 2017. Six patients with congenital cleft palate in the region of the defect of the hard palate and the alveolar process of the upper jaw underwent uranoplasty and implantation of a mixture (1 : 4) of MSCs and preosteocytes derived from them on the osteogenic membrane. The control group consisted of 40 age-matched patients who underwent the same surgery but without the use of MSCs. The distance between the cleaved portions of the alveolar process of the upper jaw ranged from 0.5–1.0 cm. The follow-up period was 6–9 months. Results. On X-ray examination 6–9 months after the operation in the bone defect area and implantation of MSCs in all patients, tissue with a density corresponding to that of bone was found. In the control group, bone tissue was not formed in the diastasis of the alveolar bone. There were no significant differences in the timing of wound healing and course of the postoperative period. Сonclusion. Tissue engineering helped in the treatment of severe congenital malformations of the maxillofacial area. There are good prospects for using MSCs in the surgical treatment of defects of the facial skeleton.

Abstract Introduction Bacterial adherence to restorative materials such as composite resin is one of the aetiology of secondary caries. This study evaluated the antibacterial efficacy of fifth generation bonding agent (BA) modified with nisin, against Streptococcus mutans based on its growth, adherence and membrane integrity. Methods Adhesive eluents of the experimental bonding agents were obtained using 250 μl Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) broth and the groups were control (BA with 0% Nisin), bonding agent with 1 wt% (NBA 1) and 5 wt% nisin (NBA 5). To this, 10 μl S. mutans culture was added and incubated at 37 °C. Bacterial growth was estimated by changes in optical density using spectrophotometer every 20 min for 2 h. The results were statistically analysed using one way ANOVA followed by Tukey Post Hoc test. For adherence and membrane integrity test, 10 μl of BHI supplemented with 1% sucrose and 50 μl of bacterial suspension were inoculated onto the cured specimens, and incubated for 4 h. After rinsing, 1 ml of Live/Dead BacLight bacterial viability stain was added and incubated in the dark for 15 min and observed under confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) for intact (green/live) and damaged (red/dead) bacterial membranes. Results Mean optical density was significantly higher in control group at all time intervals with maximum value at 2 h (0.83 ± 0.008), while there was a concentration dependant reduction in bacterial growth with the NBA groups (0.50 ± 0.007). Correspondingly, the NBA groups showed higher amount of dead than live bacteria, while live bacteria were predominant in the control group. Significance Addition of an antibacterial agent nisin in dentin bonding agent may render the resin dentin interface more resistant to bacterial penetration, and adherence of cariogenic bacteria like S. mutans.
