The study used a number of different psychological perspectives relating to the teaching and learning process in school classrooms such as behaviourism and constructivism ideas to establish the basis for effective teacher practices and characteristics in relations to teaching and learning process. A cross section survey and naturalistic design method was used to investigate the influences of teacher practices in selected secondary schools. A simple random sampling and automatic inclusion was used, and the selected sample was made up of 200 secondary school teachers, 10 of whom were heads of schools. The data collection process included interviews, classroom observation and questionnaire instruments. The findings indicated that the teaching and learning process is greatly influenced by teacher practices and characteristics. Teachers demonstrated little knowledge of teaching techniques and skills to improve teaching effectiveness and pupil learning. The study concludes that teaching and learning processes can be improved by providing teacher support and improving the quality of teacher education through professional development practices to update teacher skills. The study recommends that efforts should be made to improve instructional processes in schools in order to achieve the intended educational goals through different strategies such as seminars, workshops, improved In-service teacher Education at school, District and National levels.

The pandemic that has hit the world has forced us to do learning indirectly or is often referred to as online (Daring). Online teaching and learning process requires some adjustments both on the teacher's side and the student's side. One of the adjustments is the need to seek technology and adaptation using technology. The currently widely used technology is online meeting services, such as the Zoom Meeting application, Google Meet, Video Calling via the Massager application, or other similar applications. To adapt to the technology, teachers at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Muhammadiyah 01 Pekanbaru strongly desire to deepen ownership of the Zoom application as one of the media used for online learning. This training aims to provide an understanding and hands-on practice of using Zoom Meeting technology to increase learning effectiveness.

Traditional teaching methods have been tested, examined and many have been published in a variety of disciplines. However, newer paradigms of teaching have evolved due to the availability of technology that is implemented in many educational institutions. Besides adopting technology as a means to teaching effectiveness, the ‘soft-side’ of teaching are apparent among the more educated and more knowledgeable learners. Teachers are transforming from a ‘figure-head’ to a ‘participant.’ This study discussed the newer technology to be utilized in the classrooms and proposed a ‘soft-side’ teaching model for the ‘new’ effective teacher in the 21st century. Teaching and learning outside the box are discussed.

This chapter reveals the prospect of teacher education; teacher education and technology utilization; the issues with professional development (PD); and the perspectives on teacher professional development (TPD) in the digital age. Teacher education offers teachers ways to keep their classrooms and curriculum highly educational. By providing teachers with teacher education programs, they are able to continue their own education, gain vital skills that they may not have been able to learn while taking college courses, and stay current with new technologies. TPD is an essential method of improving teaching and learning for teachers. TPD provides time, resources, and educational personnel to support teachers to improve their skills about teaching and learning. The effective teacher education and TPD programs should include technology pedagogy, the 21st century skills, and ethical perspectives toward improving preservice teacher's technological skills and enhancing both learner's educational opportunities and learning outcomes.
