Relevance. The degree of variability of the linear parameters of the morphological elements of the seeds of the anise (variety Vityaz) and cumin (variety Peresvet).Materials and methods. 1) Plants: Monarda fistulosa L. (the breeding sample №5 U.P.), Monarda citriodora Cerv. ex Lag. (Simka variety), Melissa officinalis L. (Zhemchuzhina variety). 2) secondary metabolites: flavonoid glycoside linarozid and steroid glycoside moldstim.Methods. The studies were carried out in VNIIO – a branch of the FSBSI Federal Scientific Vegetable Center. The measurement of the length of the seed and endosperm was carried out using a caliper (GOST 166-89). The embryo length was determined using a Levenhuk 670T microscope and a DCM 300 MD video eyepiece at Ч 40 magnification using Scope Photo (Image Software V. 3.1.386). The lengths of each seed, endosperm (longitudinal section) and embryo (after isolation) were sequentially analyzed. The indices IE/C, IZ/E, IZ/C were calculated as the corresponding ratios of the length of the seed, endosperm and embryo.Results. The maximum length of the seed (4.76±0.10 mm) and of the endosperm (4.08 ± 0.08 mm) and the length of the embryo (1.40±0.02 mm) were noted in cumin seeds. The average values of the coefficient of variation (V), on the contrary, were minimal for cumin seeds, varying from 7.8% for the length of the embryo to 11.5% for the length of the seed. The average values of the coefficient of variation (V) for anise varied from 9.3% for the length of the embryo to 14.7% for the length of the seed. The maximum level of variability in both cultures was noted for seed size. Correlation analysis showed that a close relationship was observed in anise (r=0.912) and cumin seeds (r=0.876) only between the length of the seed and the length of the endosperm. The value of the correlation coefficient (r) between the linear sizes of the seed and the embryo was 0.195 for anise and 0.229 for cumin seeds, and between the length of the endosperm and the length of the embryo, 0.237 and 0.214, respectively. The correlation coefficient (r) between the index IZ/E and the linear sizes of the seed, endosperm and embryo had low negative values from -0.221 to - 0.345.

The aim of this study was to examine the energy expenditure (EE) measured using indirect calorimetry (IC) during playground games and to assess the validity of heart rate (HR) and accelerometry counts as indirect indicators of EE in children´s physical activity games. 32 primary school children (9.9 ± 0.6 years old, 19.8 ± 4.9 kg · m-2 BMI and 37.6 ± 7.2 ml · kg-1 · min-1 VO2max). Indirect calorimetry (IC), accelerometry and HR data were simultaneously collected for each child during a 90 min session of 30 playground games. Thirty-eight sessions were recorded in 32 different children. Each game was recorded at least in three occasions in other three children. The intersubject coefficient of variation within a game was 27% for IC, 37% for accelerometry and 13% for HR. The overall mean EE in the games was 4.2 ± 1.4 kcals · min-1 per game, totaling to 375 ± 122 kcals/per 90 min/session. The correlation coefficient between indirect calorimetry and accelerometer counts was 0.48 (p = .026) for endurance games and 0.21 (p = .574) for strength games. The correlation coefficient between indirect calorimetry and HR was 0.71 (p = .032) for endurance games and 0.48 (p = .026) for strength games. Our data indicate that both accelerometer and HR monitors are useful devices for estimating EE during endurance games, but only HR monitors estimates are accurate for endurance games.

Abstract Purpose To evaluate robustness and repeatability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) texture features in water and tissue phantom test-retest study. Materials and methods Separate water and tissue phantoms were imaged twice with the same protocol in a test-retest experiment using a 1.5-T scanner. Protocols were acquired to favour signal-to-noise ratio and resolution. Forty-six features including first order statistics and second-order texture features were extracted, and repeatability was assessed by calculating the concordance correlation coefficient. Separately, base image noise and resolution were manipulated in an in silico experiment, and robustness of features was calculated by assessing percentage coefficient of variation and linear correlation of features with noise and resolution. These simulation data were compared with the acquired data. Features were classified by their degree (high, intermediate, or low) of robustness and repeatability. Results Eighty percent of the MRI features were repeatable (concordance correlation coefficient > 0.9) in the phantom test-retest experiment. The majority (approximately 90%) demonstrated a strong or intermediate correlation with image acquisition parameter, and 19/46 (41%) and 13/46 (28%) of features were highly robust to noise and resolution, respectively (coefficient of variation < 5%). Agreement between the acquired and simulation data varied, with the range of agreement within feature classes between 11 and 92%. Conclusion Most MRI features were repeatable in a phantom test-retest study. This phantom data may serve as a lower limit of feature MRI repeatability. Robustness of features varies with acquisition parameter, and appropriate features can be selected for clinical validation studies.

The effect of exogenous surfactant in the treatment of acute lung injury may depend on homogeneity of distribution of the material delivered. Analyses of distribution rely on sectioning the lung, determining surfactant concentration for each piece, and describing the variation in that value. Results of such analyses are influenced by how finely the lung is sectioned. We have reanalyzed data from prior experiments to determine whether the distribution of administered surfactant is fractal, that is, is independent of the scale of measurement. Lungs from animals receiving surfactant radiolabeled with [3H]dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine were cut into 108 pieces, and the normalized radioactivity in each piece was determined. Sectioning of the lungs into different numbers of pieces (n = 2, 6, 12, 18, 36, 54, or 108) was simulated, and corresponding radioactivity contents were calculated. The coefficient of variation (CV) of these normalized values was then calculated for each scale of measurement (expressed as relative piece volume), and ln(CV) was plotted as a function of the logarithm of relative piece volume. These relationships were linear (average correlation coefficient = 0.96) for all animals, consistent with CV being a fractal property. We conclude that the intrapulmonary distribution of surfactant may be fractal and is therefore a property of the lung. This study demonstrates the utility of fractal analysis in describing the pulmonary distribution of substances introduced via the airway.

A “free hand” real-time-ultrasound method is commonly applied to measure transversus abdominis. Potentially, this increases transversus abdominis measurement error due to uncontrolled variability in probe to skin force, inclination, and roll, particularly for novice examiners. This single-group repeated-measures reliability study compared the intra-rater reliability of transversus abdominis thickness and activation measurement by a novice examiner between free hand and a standardized probe force device method. The examiner captured ultrasound videos of transversus abdominis in a single session in healthy participants ( n =  33). Free hand ultrasound featured uncontrolled probe force, inclination, and roll, while probe force device method ultrasound standardized these parameters. Images of transversus abdominis at rest and contracted were measured and transversus abdominis activation calculated. Intraclass correlation coefficient, coefficient of variation, standard error of measurement, and worthwhile differences were calculated. The probe force device method resulted in greater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.75–0.96) and lower measurement error (coefficient of variation = 8.89–28.7%) compared to free hand (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.63–0.93; coefficient of variation = 6.52–29.4%). Reliability was good for all measurements except free hand TrA-C, which was moderate. TrA-C had the lowest reliability, followed by contracted thickness of the transverse abdominis, with resting thickness of the transverse abdominis being highest. Worthwhile differences were lower using a probe force device method versus free hand for resting thickness of the transverse abdominis and contracted thickness of the transverse abdominis and similar for TrA-C. Standardization using probe force device method ultrasound to measure transversus abdominis improved intra-rater reliability in a novice examiner. Use of a probe force device method is recommended to improve reliability through reduced sources of measurement error. Probe force device method intra- and inter-rater reliability in examiners of varying experience, in clinical populations, and to visualize other structures merits exploration.

Phenotypic correlations between body weight, follicle characters, and fleece characters have been investigated in a flock of 95 fine-wool non-Peppin Merino wethers, reared in the same locality under the same conditions. The results indicated that three follicle characters, follicle chord, follicle depth, and the index of follicle bending, were independent of body weight. It was found, in agreement with the results of other workers, that body weight was highly correlated with both greasy and clean wool weights (r = 0.53 and 0.51 respectively). It was also found that follicle characters were significantly correlated with most of the fleece characters which contribute to the clean fleece weight per unit area of skin. The correlation coefficient of wool weight per unit area of skin with follicle chord was 0.33, with follicle depth 0.28, and with follicle bending index –0.35. The follicle characters were also correlated with greasy and clean fleece weights. Crimp number per inch was predicted for individual animals by using as criterion the length of the follicle chord. A highly significant correlation coefficient of 0.67 was obtained between predicted and observed crimp number. The close relationship between crimp chord and follicle chord reported in previous work was confirmed. It is suggested that simultaneous selection for body weight and certain follicle characters may have an additive effect on the production of clean wool. It is also suggested that the genetic antagonism between clean wool weight and number of crimps per inch can be explained in anatomical terms.

Abstract Serum haptoglobin has been advocated as an indicator of intravascular hemolysis. We have evaluated a nephelometric determination of serum haptoglobin. The assay is sensitive and exhibits within-run precision in the range of 2.5-7.4% coefficient of variation (CV) and between-run precision of 7.0% (CV). In addition, when haptoglobin values determined with the nephelometric assay were compared with hemoglobin-binding capacity determined by electrophoresis, the correlation coefficient was 0.968. The assay is essentially independent of phenotype and free of significant interference by hemolysis. The clinical correlation of haptoglobin values obtained for 100 selected patients with the nephelometric technique correlated well, if less than 250 mg/L, with the presence of hemolytic disease.

Abstract The determination of nitrogen in Kjeldahl digests of urine and feces has been simplified by using a manual spectrophotometric method with salicylate and hypochlorite. It neither involves the hazards of the phenol-hypochlorite method, nor requires an automated analyzer. We determined the conditions which minimize the need for precise timing and neutralization of acidic digests and obtained coefficients of variation of about 0.8%. Agreement between the spectrophotometric method and the conventional micro-Kjeldahl method was excellent; a correlation coefficient of 0.9992 and a coefficient of variation of the estimate of 2.1% were obtained. This method is well suited for a laboratory with a moderate volume of samples. We could process at least 200 digests per day, in contrast with the 60 per day which we had previously done by the Kjeldahl distillation and titration.

The use of a rolling ball viscometer to estimate the cell count of milk treated with California Mastitis Reagent is described. The method compares favorably with the direct microscopic count and requires relatively simple apparatus and unskilled operators. A correlation coefficient for mean count and log viscometer time of 0.93 with a coefficient of variation of 8.1% were obtained. The repeatability of viscometer readings was 0.97.

Abstract. Measurements of equivalent black carbon (EBC) in aerosols at the high Arctic field site Villum Research Station (VRS) at Station Nord in North Greenland showed a seasonal variation in EBC concentrations with a maximum in winter and spring at ground level. Average measured concentrations were about 0.067 ± 0.071 for the winter and 0.011 ± 0.009 for the summer period. These data were obtained using a multi-angle absorption photometer (MAAP). A similar seasonal pattern was found for sulfate concentrations with a maximum level during winter and spring analyzed by ion chromatography. Here, measured average concentrations were about 0.485 ± 0.397 for the winter and 0.112 ± 0.072 for the summer period. A correlation between EBC and sulfate concentrations was observed over the years 2011 to 2013 stating a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.72. This finding gives the hint that most likely transport of primary emitted BC particles to the Arctic was accompanied by aging of the aerosols through condensational processes. BC and sulfate are known to have only partly similar sources with respect to their transport pathways when reaching the high Arctic. Aging processes may have led to the formation of secondary inorganic matter and further transport of BC particles as cloud processing and further washout of particles is less likely based on the typically observed transport patterns of air masses arriving at VRS. Additionally, concentrations of EC (elemental carbon) based on a thermo-optical method were determined and compared to EBC measurements. EBC measurements were generally higher, but a correlation between EC and EBC resulted in a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.64. Model estimates of the climate forcing due to BC in the Arctic are based on contributions of long-range transported BC during spring and summer. The measured concentrations were here compared with model results obtained by the Danish Eulerian Hemispheric Model, DEHM. Good agreement between measured and modeled concentrations of both EBC/BC and sulfate was observed. Also, the correlation between BC and sulfate concentrations was confirmed based on the model results observed over the years 2011 to 2013 stating a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.74. The dominant source is found to be combustion of fossil fuel with biomass burning as a minor, albeit significant source.
