The 2014 election results were a major victory for the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) of the Struggle after being opposed for ten years. Jokowi's 2014 victory opened big opportunities for him and his party to return to power in the 2019 election. His victory cannot be separated from the news about himself in the media. Online media is in charge of constructing the reader's mind about the ideal leader character for Indonesia. This paper aims to provide an overview of media involvement, especially online media in winning presidential candidates and the discourse/issues they build to show the advantages and cover the shortcomings of their presidential candidates. This article uses a construction analysis approach to reality with text as its object. The results of this study indicate that online media owners play an active role in constructing the presidential choice. This is because of media interests, namely the interests of political practice, ideology, and business. In addition, online news presented to the reader contained subjectivity in order to form a strong character for the presidential candidate. At the same time, this news is used to dismiss the issue/discourse that harms the candidates.

In the 2019 election, the proportion of women elected to Indonesia’s People’s Representative Assembly ( Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat, DPR) increased significantly to almost 21 per cent. In this article, we ask whether an institutional innovation – the introduction of simultaneous presidential and legislative elections – contributed to this change. We examine the election results, demonstrating that, overall, women candidates did particularly well in provinces where the presidential candidate nominated by their party won a majority of the vote. Having established quantitatively a connection between results of the presidential elections and outcomes for women legislative candidates, we turn to our qualitative findings to seek a mechanism explaining this outcome. We argue that the simultaneous elections helped women candidates by easing their access to voters who supported one of the presidential candidates, but who were undecided on the legislative election. Rather than imposing additional burdens on female candidates, simultaneous elections assisted them.

Islam has been known as a religion of Rahmatn lil’alamiin which guarantees inclusion and maintains a treatise on all humanity. However, the interpretation of universality of Islam does not meet a common understanding even though within Muslim community itself. Those diverse interpretations have resulted in how the universality of Islam has been expressed. One of those quarrels toward interpretation is the discussion of Islam Nusantara. West Sumatera is one of the regions in Indonesia which implements Islamic law as its customary law in which rejection against Islam Nusantara has been echoed across the borders. The rejection caused reactions from various parties since West Sumatera strongly stated the rejection as a way for preserving it. Those dispute has been sharpened by the online news in several Indonesian media that began to raise the phenomenon up. This research aim to find out how those medias frame the news and whether online media contribute on minimizing public tensions. This research used descriptive method with qualitative approach. The source of the data focused on Indonesian online media news on 2018 and was analyzed with framing analysis from Robert N. Entman and also using the concept of treatment recommendation as an analyzes of dispute resolution. The results discovered that media with its framing analysis technique has their own moral judgement and treatment recommendation as a form of dispute resolution towards discourses in the media. This moral judgment can show the tendency and alignment of a media regarding an issue. In addition, the media also has an important role in developing the audience’s mindset in the midst of dispute it can be analyzed from the treatment recommendation that can be used as a media based dispute resolution.

Representative democracy entails the aggregation of multiple policy issues by parties into competing bundles of policies, or “manifestos,” which are then evaluated holistically by voters in elections. This aggregation process obscures the multidimensional policy preferences underlying a voter’s single choice of party or candidate. We address this problem through a conjoint experiment based on the actual party manifestos in Japan’s 2014 House of Representatives election. By juxtaposing sets of issue positions as hypothetical manifestos and asking respondents to choose one, our study identifies the effects of specific positions on the overall assessment of manifestos, heterogeneity in preferences among subgroups of respondents, and the popularity ranking of manifestos. Our analysis uncovers important discrepancies between voter preferences and the portrayal of the election results by politicians and the media as providing a policy mandate to the Liberal Democratic Party, underscoring the potential danger of inferring public opinion from election outcomes alone.

The specific regulatory framework under which the local elections in Mostar in 2020 were held, and especially the fact that the elections in this city were held after 12 years, puts in the focus of communication research the media treatment of the relationship between citizens and political parties in local communities organized under a mortgage of war ethnic and territorial divisions. Having in mind the influence of online media, both independent and relying on traditional media productions, this paper primarily deals with reporting on the results of local elections in Mostar, questioning the focus of reports in the context of relations between citizens, as a universal political category, and political candidates competing for the management of public affairs at the local level. Also, in additional elements of the research, the paper deals with the analysis of identification of participants in political processes, on the one hand, a citizen, who in the public discourse of Bosnia and Herzegovina is often treated as a member of an ethnic group, and a political party on the other, usually treated in media reports as a representative of national categories, and not as a performer of public affairs concerning the achieved election results.

The European Union (EU) is under severe pressure, due to the multiple crises it has to manage. Among them, the refugee crisis is remarkable, since it is shaking both the individual member states and the EU as a whole. The media coverage of the refugee crisis is important because the media still are the main source of information concerning distant issues (the refugee crisis included), and as such it facilitates people’s access to social reality. Using the perspective of agenda-setting and the conceptual background of framing theory, we aim to (1) identify the most prominent frames online media employ with reference to the refugee crisis, and (2) reveal the tone of voice online media use when portraying issues related to this crisis. To achieve these two goals, we content analyzed 1493 online news articles, published between April 15, 2015 and February 29, 2016. Main findings show that online media outlets mainly refer to the refugee crisis in terms of responsibility and conflict, in this order of prominence. At the same time, online media portals prefer using a reasonably balanced viewpoint when portraying the refugees, and a slightly negative one in terms of attitudes towards the European Union.

As a distinct foreign-policy group, neoconservatives emerged in a period of social unrest and political cynicism—a time when insurgent presidential candidates can have profound effects on the outlook and conduct of foreign policy. The George McGovern insurgency is an important historical event that was accompanied by social unrest, distrust in government, and the splintering of the Democratic Party into disparate foreign-policy groups, including the neoconservatives. McGovern, and in particular his 1972 nomination as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, is key to understanding the neoconservatives’ disaffection with their own party. This research investigates the catalyzing and unifying effect that McGovern’s 1972 run for the presidency had on those intellectuals who became neoconservatives. Taking McGovern’s role into account is vital for understanding the genesis of neoconservative ideology as well as comprehending the movement’s present day legacy.
