The study explored Head teachers’ instructional supervisory role among public Junior High Schools in the Jirapa Municipality of the Upper West Region of Ghana. It adopted psychological and system theory of supervision propounded by Planturrroot (2006) and Bertalanffy (2015) respectively. The mixed method sequential approach was followed in the conduct of the study where both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analysed. A sample size of 200 respondents made up of 40 head teachers, 80 teachers and 80 pupils were used for the quantitative data, whilst 10 head teachers were selected for the qualitative data. The Statistical Product for Service Solutions (SPSS) version 23 was used to analyse the quantitative data while thematic approach was used for the qualitative data. The findings of the study revealed in-frequent orientation for newly engaged teachers. It further showed lower ratings in the provision of in-service training, time tabling design and setting of performance target for pupils and teachers. It was recommended that the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service (GES) should regularly organize workshops, seminars and in-service trainings on supervisory roles of head teachers and assistant head teachers to equip them with the needed knowledge and skills in the municipality. Lastly, Heads of schools and other supervisors should re-design schools` time tables to suit the use of instructional time in the lesson of teachers to enhance their monitoring.

The purpose of the study is to find out the opinions of head teachers and students on classroom factors that affect performance of students in integrated science at the Junior High Schools in Kumasi Metropolis. The study used a descriptive survey. The sampling procedure employed for the study was both random and purposive sampling. A sample of two hundred and twenty (220) subjects participated in the study. The instruments that were used in the study were questionnaire and interview schedule. It was found out that most of the students in the public schools have greater access to integrated science text books as against their private school counterparts. Supervision is regularly carried out in the private schools by the head teachers but not much can be seen at the public schools and this has the tendency of improving teaching and learning of science at the private school. It was recommended that effective supervision must be performed regularly by heads of schools during integrated science lessons.

In The study investigated the extent of teacher utilization problems in the junior high schools (JHSs) in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District. It specifically sought to find out whether there were differences in teacher utilization with respect to gender, ownership of school, number of subjects taught, teaching experience, qualification, professional status and rank in the Ghana Education Service. A sample of 192 teachers made up of 160 teachers and 32 head teachers provided data for the descriptive study. Two set of questionnaires were designed for heads and teachers with reliability coefficients of 0.78 and 0.81 respectively. The SPSS was used to analyze data collected by using statistical tools such as frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, Chi-square test, t-test and Pearson’s correlation. All the analyses were at a significance cutoff of 0.05. The study revealed that although majority (88.8%) of the teachers were under-utilized in terms of teaching load, they were over-worked in the areas of teaching-related and co-curricula activities. There was a statistically significant association between subject(s) taught and teaching load of the teachers, and both male and female teachers had comparatively equal teaching load. Also, the junior-rank teachers had greater and heavier teaching workload than their senior-rank counterparts. It is recommended that additional Mathematics, Integrated Science, ICT and English teachers should be posted to the District’s junior high schools to augment the existing teacher population.

The study sought to find out whether Junior High School teachers in the Sissala East Municipality of Ghana follow the basic prescribed principles in the construction, administration and scoring of classroom achievement tests. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The study employed multistage sampling techniques (purposive, stratified, and simple random sampling procedures) to select a sample of 248 teachers from the Sissala East Municipality. A questionnaire was used for the data collection and its reliability was 0.8. Data were analysed using frequencies, means, and standard deviation. The results showed that generally, Junior High Schools teachers in the Sissala East Municipality adhere to most principles of test construction and test administration but had little knowledge of the principles in the scoring test. It was recommended that more workshops and in-service training should be organized for teachers in Junior High Schools concerning their testing practices (i.e., construction, administration and scoring of tests).

The study investigated the effect of head teachers’ supervisory styles and teachers’ job performance in public basic schools in the Mankessim Education Circuit of the Mfantseman Municipality in the Central Region of Ghana. A descriptive survey in the form of mixed methods was used for the study. Through purposive and stratified sampling techniques, 134 respondents made up of 16 head teachers, and 118 teachers were selected and engaged in the study. Two sets of questionnaires, one each for head teachers and teachers were used to collect quantitative data. Qualitative data were obtained through a semi-structured interview guide from 10 respondents (headteacher and teachers) who were conveniently sampled. Means, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression were used to analyze the quantitative data while content analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data. The study revealed that head teachers used directive control supervisory style most frequently as compared to collaborative, directive informational, and non-directive supervisory styles. Generally, teachers’ job performance was very good. Besides, the study discovered that head teachers’ supervisory styles were good predictors of teachers’ job performance. It was concluded that supervisory styles of head teachers were essential factors that influenced teachers’ job performance in schools. Among the recommendations is that in-service training in the form of workshops and seminars should be organized for both head teachers and teachers on the need for effective supervision in public basic schools in the Circuit to achieve school and educational goals.

As the American musical has come of age and matured with continuing vitality, it has developed not just one canon but many. Various performing canons are tailored to specific cultural settings, reflecting venue, expected audiences, available performers, or other factors. There exist separate canons for high schools interested in getting lots of bodies on stage, for community theaters on a budget with a stable of local stars vying for plum roles, for church groups or junior high schools more careful with subject matter, or for college groups looking for something far enough out there to satisfy their rebellious urges. And finally, there exist a critical canon and a teaching canon, for which musicals are chosen in part according to the larger historical and social narratives they support. This chapter is paired with Micaela Baranello’s “Viennese operetta canon formation and the journey to prestige.”
