Abstract Antioxidants (BHA and BHT) in different types of breakfast cereals were studied by argon ionization gas chromatography. Samples containing antioxidants were packed into the column, and antioxidants were eluted with redistilled petroleum ether. EIuates were concentrated under N2 and injected into a Barber-Colman Model 10 gas chromatograph. Recoveries ranged from about 92 to 110%. Results obtained by steam distillation-colorimetry methods were erratic. Colorimetric procedures were not free from interferences and could lead to highly erroneous results at the lower ppm levels. The gas chromatographic method is faster, simpler, and more accurate. Collaborative studies on corn and rice ready-to-eat breakfast cereals are recommended.

ABSTRACT The authors have studied the biodegradation of an Arabian Light crude oil in sterile marine water by the CUES229 marine bacteria and the BIOLEN IG30 biologic activator, both in the presence and the absence of zeolites. Two different types of zeolites, a natural one (NZ) and an artificial one (Zestek56), were used to degrade the crude in the first experiment, arising a 20% increment in the degradation in the presence of natural zeolite when compared with a similar sample without zeolites, and a 9% in the artificial zeolite. Next set of experiment were made using reactors filled with 250 g of sea water and 0.02 g of zeolite and injecting CUES 229 bacteria up to 108 cells/ml. Samples were introduced in a shaker at 110 rpm and with regulated temperature at 30-C. Time evolution of the biodegradation was deduced from gas chromatography at the time intervals 1; 7 and 15 days. Later, a similar experiment, but with BIOLEN IG30, was also made. Biodegradation of aliphatic hydrocarbons was observed –after 15 days- until the C14 fractions, using zeolites plus Biolen IG30, and until the C18 fractions, using zeolite plus CUES 229 bacteria.

The chromatographic analysis of extracts from poplar (Populus sp.) - Laying program GC-MS. The aim of the study was to develop the method of analysis by gas chromatography of the liquid obtained after extraction with cyclohexane of wood of different poplar varieties (Populus sp.). After applying an appropriate method, the application of gas chromatography with mass detector facilitates the analysis of the chemical composition of extracts from different types of lignocellulosic biomass. It is also possible to verify included compounds as well as to compare the content of individual compounds contained in the analysed sample. Moreover, this sample will make it possible to determine the significance of the influence of given substances on biofuel production processes based on lignocellulosic materials. One of the key chemical substances influencing the process of enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation are extraction substances contained in lignocellulose materials used in 2nd and 3rd generation biofuels. These compounds can inhibit the whole process of producing biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass.

Peppers are very popular as a vegetable, ornamental, and spice. They have been classified as non-climacteric fruits, but some types of hot peppers have been reported as climacteric. Comparisons of ethylene and CO2 production, binding sites and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) content between pepper types were made. Experiments in both field and greenhouse conditions were conducted. Fruits were harvested at different stages of maturity. They were placed in jars at 27 °C and ethylene and respiration rate were determined by gas chromatography. All the variables studied showed differences among pepper types. These variations were more evident in wild types than in cultivated types. Variability in the results was also higher in wild types. When the same type of pepper grown in the greenhouse and in the field were compared, significant differences were evident. Differences in maturity patterns were observed among types. These results suggest that ripening patterns, ethylene production, respiration rates and ethylene binding sites are highly dependent on the type of pepper. Differences are also dependent upon the stage of maturity and should be taken in account when harvesting and storing pepper fruits.

This study was designed to investigate the compounds in the different types of commercial aroma used to attract swiftlets in the birdhouse. Analysis of the volatile compounds is done on two types of commercial aroma, which is categorized as floor aroma (F1, F2, F3) and top aroma (T1, T2, T3) using SPME-GC-MS. As a result, F1, F2 and F3 shows the presence of major constituents like 2-heptanone (13.53%, 3.22% and 0.37% respectively) and 2-nonanone (0.83%, 2.02%, and 0.82% respectively) using DB-1ms while 2-heptanone (5.87%, 0.78% and 0.45% respectively) and methoxy-phenyl-oxime (11.50%, 11.84% and 0.20% respectively) using DB-wax. Major constituents detected using DB-1ms for T1, T2 and T3 are 1-(2-methoxy-1-methylethoxy)-2-propanol (36.49%, 16.23% and 3.06% respectively). Meanwhile, no similar compounds detected by DB-wax for sample T1, T2 and T3. The overall findings concluded that most of the formulation used in the commercial aroma contained strong odor-producing chemicals to attract swiftlets. More studies should be done on investigating the effects of the commercial aroma towards swiftlet also on aroma made from natural substances instead of chemically produced commercial aroma.

Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry was used for performing a qualitative analysis of liposoluble flour extract made of different types of small grains (bread wheat, barley and triticale). The results show that the dominant methyl-esters of fatty acids composition is same for all samples, but the percentage of their representation in various types of small grains is different. Transesterification reagent was TMSH (Trimethylsulfonium hydroxide, 0.2M in methanol). With transesterification reaction fatty acids from acilglycerol esterifyed to methyl-esters. In all extract analyzed methyl linoleate predominated, followed by methyl palmitate, methyl oleate and methyl stearate in decreasing order. The following tests cluster analysis was used for the comparison of the liposoluble flour extract different types of small grains.
