Tiwoho mangrove forest islocated in north coast of North Sulawesi province. This area functions as life buffer system for community and sustainability of Bunaken National Park. Due to the important and strategic roles of mangrove in protection and ecological functions, therefore, it is needed to know scientific information about mangrove population dynamics. This research aims to know the vegetation composition and structure vegetation of Tiwoho mangrove forest. Data collection used 20x20 m sample plots that were sistematically laid from the sea to the land side up to the highest tidal line. Distance between plots along 25 m. Results showed that at tree level Sonneratia alba had the highest Important Value Index (IVI) of 206,88 % and Brugueira sp of 46,06 %. Although Rhizopora apiculata value is lower than Brugueira sp. But the values of relative frequency of these species are almost similar. It means that both species are frequently found in observation plots. Rhizophora apiculata dominate at pole and sapling levels, but frequency of occurance this species is lower than Brugueira sp in pole level.

Mangrove forest ecosystems have a very important role for humans and the environment, so to prevent further damage needs to be done identification of tree species composition and structure of mangrove forest stands. For the purpose of this research is to know the composition of tree species from the level of seedling to the tree and to know the structure of its stand. Data collection methods used are Inventory of mangrove species using Indonesian mangrove determination keychain and data analysis by calculating important value index, Diversity index, relative frequency and horizontal structure analysis. The results showed that the largest tree density structure was Rhizophora mucronata of 225 trees / hectare, Avicennia marinna of 145 trees / hectare, Sonneratia alba of 65 trees / hectare and Avicennia officinalis of 65 trees / hectare and had only one crown layer namely strata A which is dominated by Rhizophora mucronata tree which has an average free height of 9 m branch with total height 12 m and diameter 29 cm. For this reason, planting efforts need to be increased to increase the number and composition for coastal protection.

Abstract. Isroni W, Islamy RA, Musa M, Wijanarko P. 2019. Short Communication: Species composition and density of mangrove forest in Kedawang Village, Pasuruan, East Java. Biodiversitas 20: 1688-1692. Mangrove is one of ecosystems located in estuary and shallow coastal waters and its existence has a significant role for life. The aim of this study was to identify species composition and density of mangrove forest in Kedawang village, Nguling Sub-district, Pasuruan District, East Java, Indonesia. Survey method using belt transects was carried at three sampling points. Results of this study showed that mangrove vegetation in Kedawang includes five species from three families, namely Avicenniaceae (Avicennia alba and Avicennia marina), Rhizophoraceae (Rhizophora apiculata and Rhizophora mucronata), and Sonneratiace (Sonneratia alba). At sampling point 1, A. alba dominated with a density of 37 individuals/ha at tree level, 380 individuals/ha at pole level and 3100 individuals/ha at stake level. At sampling point 2, the tree level was dominated by A. alba with 142 individuals/ha, while R. mucronata dominated the pole and stake level with 1300 and 1467individuals/ha, respectively. At sampling point 3, the pole and stake level was dominated by A. alba with 167 and 933 individuals/ha respectively, while A. marina dominated the sapling level with 800 individuals/ha. At all stations, the density at stake level is greater than that tree level. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out conservation efforts in the form of protection combined with restoration by enrichment planting at all study locations to increase the diversity and density of mangrove vegetation.
