The revitalization actions carried out in recent years within the urban tissue of Oslo made it possible to generate architectural layouts of a new character known as eco-structures. They are created both in the wharf zones of the city and accompanying natural and artificially formed promontories (Fjordbyen enterprise) as well as in its very centre (Grünerløkke district). These are old closed port and post-industrial areas now transformed into new layouts with residential, service, culture-creating and recreation functions. Frequently shaped on the border of two environments, i.e. urban and water as well as urban and park ones, they create a new quality of architecture making a dialogue with the natural environment and the local ecosystem.

Waterfront areas in the city were occupied by industrial factories and freight ports in industrial age because of their convenience for transporting materials and resources by waterway. In the post-industrial era, as the role of the city gradually shifts from the ‘production centre’ to ‘consumption centre’, redeveloping waterfront industrial areas has become a global trend. In China, the city of Shanghai begins to redevelop its waterfront industrial areas since 2002. A main goal of the redevelopment in Shanghai is to ‘return the river to the public’, namely to open up the enclosed industrial compounds and transform industrial sites in the waterfront areas to public spaces. Focusing on the waterfront redevelopment and regeneration in Shanghai, this paper quantitatively assesses the publicness and quality of the newly created public spaces in three selected waterfront areas in the city. Drawing on the results of the empirical assessments, the paper argues that Shanghai has not achieved its goal of returning the river to the public yet. In response, the paper proposes some suggestions for policy-making aiming at improving the publicness and inclusiveness of public spaces in post-industrial redevelopment areas in Shanghai and other cities in the global south.

<p>The Authors deal with the problems of management of post-industrial areas affected by high unemployment leading to prevailing frustration, increasing migration of the population and other socially and economically adverse phenomena. This is accompanied by the considerable degradation of the natural environment and the deterioration in the quality of life of the local population. The aim of the studies is showing the possibilities to create a model to manage the resources in order to achieve sustainable development, particularly to manage water and energy in the post-industrial areas. The studies have been carried out for a region heavily industrialized in the recent past with present closed down mines. In particular, the work relates to examine the possibility of: improving the quality of the surface and underground waters, using the water as a source of low-temperature heat, storing energy and producing energy in local renewable sources, ensuring proper water retention, developing post-industrial tourism through managing the post-industrial facilities and making them available. Innovation of work is to create an integrated model of resources and the environment management, in particular water resources and non-conventional energy.</p><p>The proposals constitute a contribution to the implementation of the principles of sustainable development by focusing on three of its dimensions - economic, environmental and social. At the same time it would be a way for the sustainable management of the water environment in the areas of anthropopressure, in industrial and post-industrial areas, for the purpose of collecting water, improving water quality and the use of local energy sources. The possibility of energy storage, which is extremely important in the area of an intensive development of unconventional sources of energy (wind farms, solar sources, hydroelectric, etc.), the characteristics of which are irregular, referred to simply as chimeric sources, also exists.</p>

In this article, the topic of public art in an urban environment of the post-industrial city is viewed in the context of one place – Zlín. Contemporary artworks integrated into the city spaces show the city as a site, in the context of its Modernist architecture and urbanism. They reflect both the past and the present-day changes in society and the way how we see and experience the world. Public art in Zlín has become part of the transformation and regeneration of public spaces fostering the enhancement of the quality of lives of local urban residents. It is evident from the research that Zlín can be perceived as a place with great potential for new art projects and for the public’s participation and engagement.

The industrial territories of the enterprises of ferrous metallurgy located within the city are considered, their problems at the present stage and historical and cultural signifi cance are revealed. Ways of an eff ective mechanism for improving the environmental quality of stagnant industrial areas in cities of the Siberian region are analyzed and determined. Theoretical positions and practical recommendations for the formation of strategies for the renovation of industrial areas were developed. The basic principles of the formation of public ecological spaces are formulated during the renovation of the stagnant territories of metallurgical plants located in the central regions of industrial cities. The theoretical principles of this study have been tested in the development strategy of the stagnant territory of the sludge pit of the Novokuznetsk Metallurgical Combine.

Population health and air quality represents the objective of nowadays. Environmental pollution represents its deterioration and involves altering the chemical and structural characteristics of the natural and anthropogenic components of the environment, diminishing the diversity or biological productivity of natural ecosystems, affecting the natural environment with effects on quality of life, mainly caused by pollution. Environmental monitoring becomes a systematic and methodical concern, achieved through various measurement systems, in order to ensure the efficient management of all social activities. The Covid-19 pandemic has left its mark on air quality, reducing the amount of harmful compounds. Consequences of "lockdown" caused by the COVID-19 have been studied in the city Brasov, from Romania country, where the amount of suspended particles of 10 microns, respectively 25 microns.

Abstract: In recent years many new and modern buildings have emerged in Yogyakarta, on the other hand the existence of kampongs and the natural environment continues to decline, including local wisdom in managing the environment is increasingly abandoned. Kampung Gampingan as a "kampung kota" in the city of Yogyakarta, located on the riverside of the Winongo River. Kampong administrators and it’s citizen Gampingan cooperate to manage and maintain the quality of the kampong environment. For them, the aspect of environmental conservation is very important and considered because it aims to maintain harmonious relationships between humans and the natural environment. The purpose of this paper is to explore information about environmental management in kampong Gampingan, which involves citizens and consider the impact on the natural environment. The results show that community participation, partnerships with various parties (other communities, universities, government and private), and the role of facilitators are very important in the management of kampong based on local wisdom. Kampung Gampingan termasuk “kampung kota” di kota Yogyakarta, terletak di tepi Sungai Winongo. Pengurus kampung dan warga kampung Gampingan bergotong-royong mengelola dan menjaga kualitas lingkungan kampung. Bagi mereka, aspek pelestarian lingkungan sangat penting dan diperhatikan sebab bertujuan menjaga hubungan harmonis manusia dan lingkungan alam. Tujuan tulisan ini adalah menggali informasi tentang pengelolaan lingkungan di kampung Gampingan, yang melibatkan warga dan mempertimbangkan dampak terhadap lingkungan alam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa partisipasi masyarakat, kemitraan dengan berbagai pihak (komunitas lain, perguruan tinggi, pemerintah dan swasta), dan peran fasilitator sangat penting dalam pengelolaan kampung yang berbasis kearifan lokal. Peranserta masyarakat menjadi kunci keberhasilan atau kegagalan pengelolaan kampung berbasis kearifan lokal.Kata kunci: mengelola kampung, partisipasi warga, kearifan lokal

Abstract Rapid urban growth can exert negative effects on the natural environment due to the loss of naturally vegetated areas, loss of biological diversity, deforestation and soil erosion. The condition of cities is inherently linked with the natural environment which has a positive influence on health, social relations, human welfare and economic activity. Urban areas should abound in green spaces, and should also be easily accessible to the general public. The aim of this study was to determine the spatial distribution, influence and quality of urban green spaces on the example of the city of Tczew in northern Poland. The proposed methodology can be applied in cities of a similar size and urban structure to promote rational management of urban green space in line with the principles of sustainable development and spatial order. The Green-Space Record, a useful tool for inventorying urban green spaces, was developed to pursue the main research goal. The information accumulated in the Record constitutes valuable input data for further analysis, including the determination of the area, distribution, influence and quality of urban green spaces. The results of the analysis revealed that urban green spaces occupy more than 19% of Tczew’s territory, which is equivalent to 70.6 m2 per resident. Managed green spaces span the area of only 66.75 ha (11.31 m2 per resident) and are unevenly distributed in the city. More than half of these areas are found in the Stare Miasto (Old Town) district, whereas two residential districts (Gdańska, Prątnica) are completely devoid of public greens. The quality of urban green spaces is generally satisfactory in Tczew; however, not all residents have equal access to high-quality public greens.

Post-industrial areas in larger cities often cease to fulfill their role and their natural result is their transformation. They often constitute a large area directly adjacent to the city structure and are exposed to urbanization pressure, and on the other hand, they are often potential hydrological windows. The approach to the development strategy for such areas should take this potential into account. The article presents the example of Cracow (Poland) and post-industrial areas constituting the hydrological and bioretention potential in terms of the possibility of their development and the legal aspects of the development strategies of these areas.

Within the urban heat island that exists over Kyiv, the temperature distribution strongly depends on the landscape-functional structure of the city, namely on the degree of heating and radiation of the land cover, their relationships, proportion and changes over time. Using the thermal ranges of the satellite data of the Landsat mission, we have considered why, and where exactly, the land surface temperature changes (LST) occur from 1986 to 2018. The spatio-temporal analysis of LST is performed using profiles that cross industrial and post-industrial territories of Kyiv. It’s been shown that such territories have higher level of land surface temperature according to artificial covering surface density increasing. The Shulyavsk and Svyatoshinsk industrial zones that historically exists in central and west part of the city have been taken, as example. The post-industrial transformation of such, territories today unfortunately, does not meet the requirements of the revitalization in spite of their transformation and a decreasing in the production load. The most intense temperature increases are recorded on the outskirts of the city through new housing construction and destruction of natural landscapes, which significantly expanded the boundaries of the urban thermal island. Analysis of the surface temperatures by seasons showed that the thermal anomalies exist over industrial areas, but the LST oscillation amplitude reaches 15оС in summer between production and forest-park areas.
