PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to offer a complete guide to a qualitative method for capturing critical moments of managerial practice that combines interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) and existential hermeneutic phenomenology (EHP).Design/methodology/approachThis article is based on the findings of extensive research and describes in detail the specific steps that must be taken for complete replication of research. The research uses methods of IPA and critically develops the EHP framework with an emphasis on the analysis of interpersonal relationships.FindingsDepending on the testing of the research method in practice, the article evaluates the IPA-EHP method as suitable for the research on critical moments of managerial lived experience, considering the causes of the crisis.Originality/valueThis article is based on demand from academics who would like to use this method to analyse managerial practice. Especially now, at a time associated with a number of challenging events, such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, qualitative research is gaining in importance, even in management science. The original interpretative framework based on the phenomenology of Fink and Patočka is appropriate in this respect.

Orientation: Workplace testing is seen as a viable method in monitoring alcohol intoxication in the workplace. This article explored lived experiences of random and scheduled alcohol breathalyser testing to gain insights into meaning and understanding of the phenomenon under study.Research purpose: Random and scheduled testing are preferred techniques of assessing intoxication in the workplace. This article set to gain insights into whether behaviour can have an influence on the effectiveness of random and scheduled testing. The information can contribute to the ongoing debate on the efficacy of workplace testing and lays groundwork for future studies.Motivation for the study: Emergent data seem to suggest that the success of workplace testing in preventing alcohol and substance use in the workplace is indecisive.Research approach/design and method: A qualitative method was employed to collect data from eight alcohol-consuming individuals who performed jobs considered safety-sensitive through semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed through the application of an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA).Main findings: Findings revealed incidents of alcohol intoxication within the workplace in spite of random and scheduled testing in place. There seems to be a disregard for rules that prohibit intoxication in the workplace. Money bribes seem to enable cheating on testing in the workplace. Behaviour undercuts the goal of an alcohol-free workplace.Practical implications: Behaviour stemming from on-site intoxication and cheating on alcohol tests hinders on the goal of attaining an alcohol-free workplace.Contribution/value-add: The analysis of behaviour could contribute to the ongoing debate regarding the efficacy of workplace testing.

Ship accidents create emergencies and affect victims, both physically and psychologically. Human error and extreme weather are still the main causes of ship accidents. The crew of the ship, especially the skipper, has an important role and responsibility in ensuring the safety and security of passengers while on the ship. This study is a phenomenology study that aimed to explore the experience of the sailboat crew in dealing with an emergency during an accident in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Data collection using in-depth interviews with six crew members who have experienced accidents with tourist passengers. The interview result was recorded and transcribed by the researcher and data were then analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) which consisted of six steps of analysis (Reading and re-reading, Initial Noting, Developing Emergent Themes, Searching for Connections Across Emergent Themes, Moving the Next Cases, and Looking for Patterns Across Cases). The results of this study indicate that the crew always tries to save passengers by utilizing the safety equipment available onboard. Although other results indicate that the crew felt that the ship accident was a disaster that occurred outside of the human will, or was not crew negligence.

AbstractThis research was a descriptive study, using a qualitative method approach. The main instrument in this study was the researcher himself and assisted by supporting instruments such as stationery, cameras and tape recorders. Data collection techniques were carried out by official data, observation, interviews and documentation. The steps data analysis were data reduction, data presentation and conclusions. The results of the research showed that, in the practicing process of talempong creation at Saandiko Studio, the trainer was very good at providing the Implementation of Talempong Creation Playing Skills at Saandiko Studio. It also proved that the trainer succeeded in providing training to studio members by using several methods, namely by applying the lecture, demonstration and drill method, so the trainer's aim to develop the skills of the studio members produced excellent talent in playing talempong creationKeyword: application, skill, talempong creations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the characteristics of posttraumatic growth arising from losing an immediate family member to suicide in Korea. We used interpretative phenomenological analysis for data collection and analysis and conducted in-depth interviews with 11 participants in Korea to evaluate the positive changes subsequent to the suicide. Participants revealed positive outcomes in response to losing an immediate family member to suicide after suffering the “most unimaginable pain” including (a) “Now I know what the most important thing in life is,” (b) “Warm and intimate relationships matter,” and (c) “Survivors of suicide’s search for meaning.” The implications of these findings and avenues for future research are discussed.

The research aimed at examining ways by which Madurese women could achieve satisfaction in early marriage. Its used a qualitative research method with an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). To understand the meaning of one’s experience by looking for themes from available data, IPA rested on three pillars, namely phenomenology, hermeneutics, and idiography. The researchers used semi-structured interviews to collect data and purposive homogeneous sampling. The participants involved were three married women under 18 years old who were living in Madura. The results of the research show that the three women are satisfied with their marriage. The satisfaction of their marriage can be seen from taking care of each other when sick, giving her enough money, and always happy with her husband, not far apart. Furthermore, Madurese women dissatisfaction in her marriage can be seen from anger if she is not given money and is not helped in doing household.

Data collection is done by direct observation techniques, with the approach of observation, interviews, recording and recording and using documentation and literature study. The preservation of Ronggeng's art now depends on the willingness, effort and efforts of local artists. It means that the life and death of Ronggeng art lies in the hands of artists. Local artists are the only people who are responsible and responsible today for the preservation of Ronggeng art. Whereas the public only wants to be a loyal audience. If the number of artists decreases and at one time all of them are no longer physically able to activate or they have died, it can be predicted Ronggeng art will be extinct in Nagari Simpang Tonang. Therefore, Ronggeng's art today is very dependent on the efforts and efforts of artists in their activitiesboth formally and informally. Keywords: Art, Music, Ronggeng, Culture

Trichotillomania (TTM) is characterised by the removal of one's hair, causing hair loss. Phenomenological research on TTM has investigated its associated behavioural and affective factors. Few studies have investigated the possible role of cognitions and beliefs, despite emerging support for cognitive therapies in treating this disorder. This study aimed to explore and describe the cognitions and beliefs that contribute to the onset and maintenance of hairpulling in TTM. Eight women with TTM participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews to explore their experience of cognitions and beliefs before, during and after typical hairpulling episodes. Interviews were analysed using the qualitative method of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Six superordinate themes of beliefs were identified as important: negative self-beliefs, control beliefs, beliefs about coping, beliefs about negative emotions, permission-giving beliefs, and perfectionism. These preliminary findings suggest that cognitions may play an important role in TTM phenomenology. Future quantitative research on the role of cognitions and beliefs in TTM in larger samples has the potential to advance cognitive-behavioural models and treatments of this poorly understood disorder.
