Associated Factors of Stunting and Thinness among Rural Adolescent Girls in Telangana, South India

Adolescent girls are the future mothers and their nutritional needs are critical for the wellbeing of a society and future generations. Stunting and thinness are widely prevalent malnutrition problems among adolescent girls and are known risk factor for obstetric complications and associated with the reduced work capacity. In this connection, an attempt is made in this study to explore the prevalence of stunting and thinness among rural adolescent girls in the newly formed Telangana state in India and their associations with socio-demographic factors. It is a cross sectional study carried out in two districts of Telangana state, India during 2012-2014. WHO guidelines were used to compute the prevalence of stunting and thinness and the data was analyzed on SPSS software. A binary logistic regression was used to identify the risk factors of stunting and thinness and the odds ratios were presented along with the 95% confidence intervals. The prevalence of stunting and thinness among adolescent girls in this study area was 33.4% and 20.4% respectively. Absolute height deficit of 6-13 cm was observed during the adolescence period. Age of the respondent, community, standard of living conditions and occupation of the household head were significantly associated with the stunting and age at menarche, literacy status of the girls was associated with the thinness. The prevalence of stunting and thinness was associated with age of the adolescent girls and standard of living, timely introduction of age-specific nutritional education and practices needed for these adolescent girls.

The onset of menarche is part of physical and sexual maturity process. Previous studies have shown that the nutritional status of an adolescenst girl have important influence on the menarche age. The study was designed to determine the age of menarche and its relation to nutritional status of adolescent girls in SMP Negeri 10 Bulukumba. This was an analytical survey with a Cross Sectional Study approach. The sample in this study consisted of 74 people (total sampling), namely all students who had experienced menarche. The result of this study indicate that of the 74 respondents studied, there were 48 respondents had a good nutritional status, 43.75% had experienced normal menarche and 56.25% had experienced abnormal menarche. There were 26 respondents had a malnutrition, 15.38% had experienced normal menarche and 84.62% had experienced abnormal menarche. The results of statistical tests showed that there was an association between the nutritional status and the age at menarche of adolescent girls in SMP Negeri 10 Bulukumba (Pv=0,020; OR= 4,28). It is concluded that nutritional status is significantly associated with the age at menarche in adolesence. A good nutritional status in adolescent girls will experience puberty normally, resulting in normal and uninterrupted menstruation.

A cross sectional study was conducted among 120 adolescent girls from rural area (of Calicut, Kerala), India. Findings showed lesser level of stress but adopted maladaptive coping strategies. Importance of mental health programme in schools and colleges targeting adolescent girls was discussed.

Background: Adolescence is a period with rapid growth drive and demands higher nutrition. Improving Nutritional status of rural adolescent girls becomes the cornerstone of community’s nutritional status and target intervention for breaking intergeneration cycle of nutritional deficiencies. The objective of the study was to determine nutritional status and study the demographic factors affecting nutritional status of rural adolescent girls in Dharwad district.Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 350 adolescent school girls studying in eight high schools in rural area of Dharwad district during July – September 2017. Demographic profile and dietary pattern was obtained. Anthropometric measurement and clinical examination was done. Statistical analysis was done using SSPS package.Results: Study found 14.9% of rural adolescent girls were under- weight for their age. Based on BMI, 25.2% of girls were under-nourished and 3.7% were over nourished. Significant relation with age, type of diet and age of menarche was found at p value <0.05.Conclusions: There is high prevalence of under nutrition among adolescent girls and is under nutrition is associated with micronutrient deficiencies like anaemia. There is need to create awareness to improve the nutritional needs of adolescent girls in rural areas.

Background: Menstruation is said to be a physiological process in women. The word ‘menstruation’ was derived from a Latin word ‘menses’. Menstrual dysfunction was found to affect 75% of adolescent girls which includes dysmenorrhoea, menorrhagia and irregular cycles. Premenstrual syndrome constitutes a group of physical and emotional symptoms which occurs one week before menstrual cycle. It was found to be a cycle disorder which appears in the luteal phase. Adolescent girls are at high risk of developing premenstrual syndrome. Because of menstrual dysfunction and premenstrual syndrome, the adolescent girls are at high risk of menstrual morbidity.Methods: After getting approval from institutional ethical committee of Madras Medical College, the study was carried out in adolescent girls. The study was carried out by giving questionnaire in nearly 505 students for the duration of 6 months. The study participants were explained about the study. The questionnaire was structured so as to obtain information regarding the age at menarche, duration of cycle, awareness about menstruation, source of information regarding menstruation, practices during menstrual cycles, regarding menstrual problems and treatment practices.Results: The average age of participants was 17 years with an SD of 1.5. of 505 participants, about 6% had 45 days frequency, 10% had 38 days frequency and 2% had 60 days frequency of menstrual cycle. It was found around 1% had 8 days duration and 3% had 9 days duration of menstrual cycle. About 13% of Participants had mild flow, 7% had severe flow and 20% had variable quantity of menstrual flow.Conclusions: From this study, it was found that menstrual dysfunction were prevalent among adolescent girls. These were found to cause menstrual morbidity among adolescent girls. Hence it is necessary to educate and create awareness about menstrual morbidity among adolescent girls.

Introduction: Biological, psychosocial, cognitive, emotional and social changes begin during puberty and continue throughout adolescence. The age at which a female reaches sexual maturity is critical in determining her future reproductive health and success. The aim of the study was to assess the average age of sexual feeling and menarche among the adolescent girls and its determinants. Methods: Three hundred fifty five respondents were selected through simple random sampling from three secondary schools (namely Sunrise Boarding School, Swaraswati Secondary School and Gyanjyoti Samudayak Bidhyalaya) in Palpa for the cross-sectional study. Structured interview schedule was used to collect information. Data was tabulated in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and analyzed with SPSS-16. Results: Most of the girls (44.8%) attained menarche at 12 years (M = 12.4, SD = 1.11). Age at menarche was more likely before 13 years of age when the age of onset of sexual feeling was earlier than 12 years of age, in students than in domestic workers and if they are living with parents than in those not living with parents. Conclusion: The average age of menarche among the adolescent girls was 12.40 years and it could be influenced by age of sexual feeling, occupation and living status of girls.

Background: Age at menarche reflects the health status of a population. This marks the beginning of sexual maturation and is affected by various factors. This study measured the menarcheal age of adolescent girls in Aligarh and explored factors that could influence the onset of menarche.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study in schools under Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh was undertaken. A total of 422 girls were taken by systematic random sampling with probability proportionate to size. Data was analysed statistically by ANOVA and post hoc Scheffe test using SPSS Version 20.Results: Majority of the study population (69.9%) had attained menarche between 12-14 years. The mean age of menarche is 12.52±1.415. On analysis of variance (ANOVA) testing, the age of menarche was significantly associated with socioeconomic class (p=0.002). On applying post hoc Scheffe test there was a significant difference in the mean age of menarche between class 1 and class 5 (p=0.01).Conclusions: In this study most of the girls attained menarche between 12-14 years. Socio economic class and birth order had influenced the age of menarche. Mothers were main source of information on attainment of menarche.
