Who owns the student voice?

This research, undertaken by Student Fellows (a scheme managed by both the University of Winchester and Winchester Student Union), aims to evaluate students’ perceptions of student voice at the University and to raise awareness of the opportunities available. Through the mixed-method approach of concept mapping, focus groups and surveys, the hope is to target the gap in the literature of this field. Having a personal connection with this project gave us a powerful insight into the students’ mindset and therefore allowed us to address the issue directly, particularly with regard to the decrease in engagement with student activities from school to university.

This paper examines the organisational culture of a comprehensive school that converted to an academy in 2010 by utilising the cultural web model as a tool for analysing an academy’s culture. The case study employs a concurrent mixed-method approach of questionnaires for staff with no responsibility (SNR), focus groups for staff with management responsibility (SMR) and interviews with members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT). The subsequent results are then discussed in relation to three themes, extracted from the cultural web – ‘student-centric’, ‘staff constraints’ and ‘leadership issues’. The findings from this research successfully demonstrate the model’s ability to afford valuable insight into an academy by offering a depiction of its organisational culture and targets for organisational improvement. In addition, the paper presents a method for the future deployment of the cultural web which enables comparisons of an academy’s subcultures.

El artículo se propone abordar las nuevas formas de aprendizaje ubicuo con las tabletas en el ámbito universitario actual. Vincular las tabletas a la universidad con la comunidad educativa, es una de las exigencias metodológicas activas que el alumnado requiere para explorar algunos de los cambios que los nuevos contextos en la formación del estudiante universitario, así como la forma en que éstas impactan en el pensamiento y el aprendizaje, encaminadas a partir de la respuesta que brinda a las demandas y necesidades que se presentan en el ámbito académico. A través del diseño de investigación descriptivo, con un enfoque mixto, se analiza una muestra de 213 estudiantes de dos universidades, integrando las técnicas cualitativas (directivos) y cuantitativas. Para la validación de la encuesta, se utilizó la técnica de expertos, seleccionados mediante el procedimiento de «Coeficiente K». El análisis del cuestionario se hizo a través de la prueba de Cronbach, siendo significativa con 0,897 de grado de fiabilidad. Los resultados señalaron que existe un desconocimiento sobre su función pedagógica, poca valoración y preparación para emplearla en el aprendizaje y para cambiar las prácticas formativas tradicionales. Además, una oportunidad de aprovechar estos dispositivos es poder articular conocimientos académicos, científicos y tecnológicos, con las diferentes realidades que germinan en el contexto universitario. Se concluye que el uso de las tabletas es un campo de investigación y práctica educativa en auge por las tecnologías, por lo que se hace necesario conocer su potencial en la apropiación del conocimiento en la educación y el aprendizaje significativo. This article aims to address the new forms of ubiquitous learning with tablets in current university environments. Bringing tablets into the university educational community is one of the methodological demands that students require in order to explore some of the changes in the new contexts which define university students’ education. Besides, it is also necessary to shed light on the impact of tablets on the thinking and learning processes which academic contexts aim to activate in students. Through a descriptive research design, with a mixed-method approach, a sample of 210 students from two universities is analyzed, integrating qualitative (managing staff) and quantitative techniques. To validate the survey, the technique of experts’ opinions was applied—the experts were selected through the "Coefficient K" procedure. The analysis of the questionnaire was done through a Cronbach test and the degree of reliability obtained was significant (0,897). The results reveal a certain resistance to change traditional teacher training practices, a poor perception of the educational potential of tablets and a lack of knowledge about their pedagogical role. A clear possibility to take advantage of these devices consists of articulating academic, scientific and technological knowledge based on the different realities which emerge from university contexts. The present article concludes by stating that the use of tablets is a research strand which is booming due to new technologies and, therefore, it seems necessary to raise awareness of its great potential when it comes to the articulation of knowledge and the implementation of meaningful learning.

The current study is an experimental digital game-based (DGBL) endeavor which tackles potential educational issues beyond the frequent use of games, language learning potentials in particular. It has used a mixed method approach, i.e., quantitative and qualitative. The study aims at exploring the practical effects of videogame play, Trace Effect, on improving the players’ linguistic competence. It is hypothesized that (playing videogame cannot create any difference of performance between groups of subject matters for improving English language learning. The study has concluded the followings; overall inferential statistics confirmed that playing videogame can effectively get into the improvement process of teaching English as a foreign language to the university students. On the other hand, playing the videogame, Trace Effects, has formed the solely major cause of improvement and learning in the following domains, creating friendly fascinating atmosphere, upgrading technological skills, increasing motivation towards learning, making use of homework as a form of external extensive activity, forming semi-independent learning, and practicing and virtual reality of the second/foreign language’s culture.

<div class="page" title="Page 1"><div class="layoutArea"><div class="column"><p><span>The paper is to examine the information security measures, physical, organisational and technological in Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU), University of Delhi (DU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) in Delhi. The paper uses a mixed-method approach that combines both quantitative and qualitative analyses of information security measures </span><span>with the help of a specially designed checklist. The findings of the study reveals that JNU scored 69.23 per cent highest information security features, followed by DU with 66.15 per cent, and JMI got the lowest total score with 63.07 per cent. The study has also revealed that all the university libraries under study have been lagging behind </span><span>in physical security measures. It is hoped that the present study will help in improving the information security </span><span>lacunas in libraries under study. The findings of the study will not only guide the university librarians to improve their Information security measures, but also open the floodgates for improvements of information security in fast </span><span>changing technological world so that they can overcome the limitations being faced by librarians. </span></p></div></div></div><p> </p>

This paper considers the key findings of a year-long collaborative research project focusing on the audience of the London Symphony Orchestra and their introduction of a new mobile telephone (‘app’) ticketing system. A mixed-method approach was employed, utilizing focus groups and questionnaires with over 80 participants, to research a sample group of university students. This research develops our understanding of classical music audiences, and highlights the continued individualistic, middle-class, and exclusionary culture of classical music attendance and patterns of behaviours. The research also suggests that a mobile phone app does prove a useful mechanism for selling discounted tickets, but shows little indication of being a useful means of expanding this audience beyond its traditional demographic.

This article investigates the prospect of implementing multidisciplinary and multicultural student teamwork (MMT), along with Case-based Learning (CBL) and Problem-based Learning (PBL), as a sustainable teaching practice. Based on a mixed-method approach, which includes direct observation (both physical and virtual), questionnaire distribution, and focus groups, the study reveals that MMT through CBL and PBL can both facilitate and hinder sustainable learning. Our findings show that while MMT enhances knowledge sharing, it also poses a wide range of challenges, raising questions about its social significance as a sustainable teaching practice. The study suggests the implementation of certain mechanisms, such as ‘Teamwork Training’ and ‘Pedagogical Mentors’, aiming to strengthen the sustainable orientation of MMT through CBL and PBL.

Slow tourism is one of the new trending concepts that bring the concept of slowness into tourism practices in the way that tourists appreciate local food, culture, heritage, and sustainability. Destinations adopting principles of slow tourism tau reduce the financial leakage of the suppliers and generate more income and employment to the locals. Thus, the case of "Moonlight farm and Resort at Barouk" area, is the core topic for this study to understand the relation between slow tourism, sustainable development and ecology, which has the roots in interest for locality, community, and green travel. The main research question is ,,How can slow tourism be a tool of sustainable development?". In order to answer this, a mixed-method approach was conducted through the use of two questionnaires addressed to tourists visiting "Moonlight farm " and residents in Barouk area. Additionally, an interview with the owner provided significant insight into the topic. The analysis of the results was beneficial in understanding the perceptions and motivations of tourists and helping promote slow tourism in this area.

The process of preparing young people for leaving alternative care is not sufficiently researched in Serbia. In order to define what support is necessary for their successful emancipation, this study of 150 young people in care aims to analyse both their preparedness for leaving alternative care, and whether the type of placement (kinship, foster, or residential) makes a difference to the level of preparedness. A mixed method approach was applied. Quantitatively, questionnaires assessing factors contributing to successful emancipation were administered<strong>.</strong> Qualitatively, transcripts of discussions from 5 focus groups, consisting of a total of 26 participants from all 3 types of placement, were analysed. Most of the youth in the sample indicated they have self-care and housekeeping skills, social skills to make friendships and connections, good grades in school, and aspirations for further schooling and starting a family. However, negative feelings such as disturbance, fear, and sorrow, and a sense of missing support and feeling insufficiently prepared for leaving care were also evident in their answers. Both the focus groups and surveys suggest that the biggest concern with the independence of young people leaving alternative care is financial stability. Several recommendations for ways to influence the system in order to improve outcomes for young people are made.

The aim of the study was to conduct an exploration into the issues around the employee satisfaction strategy and tool being utilised by a large public utility in South Africa. A mixed method approach was applied incorporating focus groups, individual interviews, and a questionnaire. The results indicate that staff are not satisfied with the existing strategy, are reasonably comfortable with the dimensions being measured but clearly want to see a qualitative aspect added. Major areas of concern are: lack of feedback, little or no action plans linked to the results and a lack of a genuine concern for employee satisfaction.

This paper explores the level of awareness people have about the environmental impact of menstrual products. Currently the most popular types of product are also the most detrimental to the natural environment, particularly due to the amount of hidden plastic in disposable items. This research seeks to find out whether people realize that this is the case and whether those that are more aware of the damage are likely to make choices that are less harmful to the environment. A mixed method approach was taken, using online surveys and focus groups. The results of the study show that most participants were not aware at the amount of plastic in disposable menstrual products, and that there are other issues linked to their environmental impact that people are generally not aware of. Some participants were more aware of the issues than others and the research suggests that those with a higher awareness are more likely to choose products that are less harmful to the environment. Based on these findings, future actions and areas of further research are suggested.
