Erosion is divided into two stages in accordance with the accepted design scheme for erosion of a soil dam during overflow. The paper deals with the first stage, when the downstream thrust prism is washed out. The key factor in calculating erosion deformations is the choice of the solid flow rate formula. Studies show that the mechanism of formation and transportation of solid runoff during erosion of dam models from sandy oils is very similar to that previously described by many authors for the condition of river channel erosion. The peculiarity of the process is that the erosion occurs at high speeds. Therefore, solid runoff almost immediately goes into a suspended state. To select the required formula, experiments have been carried out on models of dams made of sandy soils having various granulometric composition. It has been established that at high velocities under the considered conditions, the value of the solid waste flow rate depends solely on hydraulic characteristics of the flow. The influence of physical and mechanical properties of the eroded soil on the value of the flow rate of solid runoff is insignificant, and they may not be taken into account. Calculations have been carried out using formulas known from river hydraulics, which show that none of them gives sufficient convergence with experimental data. Based on the analysis of a large number of experimental data, a formula for the discharge of solid runoff for erosion conditions of dam models during overflow has been obtained in the paper. This has taken into account the fact that the dam erosion by the overflow has a high degree of stochasticity and is difficult to describe theoretically. This is especially evident in conditions of spatial erosion, when, simultaneously with the classical erosion of the bottom, the sides of the eroded hole periodically collapse, which is difficult to take into account in the calculations.

The biosorption performance of both batch and liquid-solid fluidized bed operations of dead fungal biomass type (Agaricusbisporus ) for removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution was investigated. In batch system, the adsorption capacity and removal efficiency of dead fungal biomass were evaluated. In fluidized bed system, the experiments were conducted to study the effects of important parameters such as particle size (701-1400m), initial dye concentration(10-100 mg/L), bed depth (5-15 cm) and solution flow rate (5-20 ml/min) on breakthrough curves. In batch method, the experimental data was modeled using several models (Langmuir,Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkviechmodels) to study equilibrium isotherms, the experimental data followed Langmuir model and the results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity obtained was (28.90, 24.15, 21.23 mg/g) at mean particle size (0.786, 0.935, 1.280 mm) respectively. In Fluidized-bed method, the results show that the total ion uptake and the overall capacity will be decreased with increasing flow rate and increased with increasing initial concentrations, bed depth and decreasing particle size.

Underwater wet welding (UWW) combined with the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) method has proven to be an effective way of permanently joining metals that can be performed in water. This research was conducted to determine the effect of water flow rate on the physical and mechanical properties (tensile, hardness, toughness, and bending effect) of underwater welded bead on A36 steel plate. The control variables used were a welding speed of 4 mm/s, a current of 120 A, electrode E7018 with a diameter of 4 mm, and freshwater. The results show that variations in water flow affected defects, microstructure, and mechanical properties of underwater welds. These defects include spatter, porosity, and undercut, which occur in all underwater welding results. The presence of flow and an increased flow rate causes differences in the microstructure, increased porosity on the weld metal, and undercut on the UWW specimen. An increase in water flow rate causes the acicular ferrite microstructure to appear greater, and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) will form finer grains. The best mechanical properties are achieved by welding with the highest flow rate, with a tensile strength of 534.1 MPa, 3.6% elongation, a Vickers microhardness in the HAZ area of 424 HV, and an impact strength of 1.47 J/mm2.

2D models based on the shallow water equations are widely used in river hydraulics. However, these models can present deficiencies in those cases in which their intrinsic hypotheses are not fulfilled. One of these cases is in the presence of weirs. In this work we present an experimental dataset including 194 experiments in nine different weirs. The experimental data are compared to the numerical results obtained with a 2D shallow water model in order to quantify the discrepancies that exist due to the non-fulfillment of the hydrostatic pressure hypotheses. The experimental dataset presented can be used for the validation of other modelling approaches.

Recirculation is an important factor in single needle dialysis and, if high, can compromise treatment efficiency. To provide information regarding recirculation characteristics of access devices used in single needle dialysis, we have developed a new technique to characterise recirculation and have used this to measure the recirculation of a Terumo 15G fistula needle and a VasCath SC2300 single lumen catheter. The experimentally obtained results agreed well with those established clinically (8.5 ± 2.4% and 18.4 ± 3.4%). The experimental results have also demonstrated a dependence on access type, pump speeds and fistula flow rate. A comparison of experimental data with theoretical predictions showed that the latter exceeded those measured with the largest contribution being due to the experimental fistula.

This paper presents a comparison of MELCOR calculated results with experimental data for the QUENCH-16 experiment. The analysis for the air ingress experiment QUENCH-16 has been performed by INRNE. The calculations have been performed with MELCOR code. The QUENCH-16 experiment has been performed on 27-th of July 2011 in the frame of the EC-supported LACOMECO program. The experiments have focused on air ingress investigation into an overheated core following earlier partial oxidation in steam. QUENCH-16 has been performed with limited pre-oxidation and low air flow rate. One of the main objectives of QUENCH-16 was to examine the interaction between nitrogen and oxidized cladding during a prolonged period of oxygen starvation. The bundle is made from 20 heated fuel rod simulators arranged in two concentric rings and one unheated central fuel rod simulator, each about 2.5 m long. The tungsten heaters were surrounded by annular ZrO2 pellets to simulate the UO2 fuel. The geometry and most other bundle components are prototypical for Western-type PWRs. To improve the obtained results it has been made a series of calculations to select an appropriate initial temperature of the oxidation of the fuel bundle and modified correlation oxidation of Zircaloy with MELCOR computer code. The compared results have shown good agreement of calculated hydrogen and oxygen starvation in comparison with test data.

Silicon wafers are the most widely used substrates for fabricating integrated circuits. A sequence of processes is needed to turn a silicon ingot into silicon wafers. One of the processes is flattening by lapping or by grinding to achieve a high degree of flatness and parallelism of the wafer [1, 2, 3]. Lapping can effectively remove or reduce the waviness induced by preceding operations [2, 4]. The main aim of this paper is to compare the simulation results with lapping experimental data obtained from the Polish producer of silicon wafers, the company Cemat Silicon from Warsaw (www.cematsil.com). Proposed model is going to be implemented by this company for the tool wear prediction. Proposed model can be applied for lapping or grinding with single or double-disc lapping kinematics [5, 6, 7]. Geometrical and kinematical relations with the simulations are presented in the work. Generated results for given workpiece diameter and for different kinematical parameters are studied using models programmed in the Matlab environment.

Path degradation of drug reducing agents (DRA) can cause changes in the main mode parameters of the main pipeline; pressure and flow rate, relative to the stable values, and complicate the adjustment of their deviations from the standard indicators. At the same time, up until now there has been no methodology for calculating pumping modes when using DRA that takes degradation into account. The authors set a goal to develop a methodology to mathematically describe the pressure distribution in the pipeline, taking into account the path degradation of the agent, as well as the parameters at different DRA concentrations. To achieve this goal, it is proposed to supplement the equation of the pressure head balance with the empirical dependency of agent efficiency on the length of the pipeline. When calculating the pressure at intermediate points of the route, it is proposed to use the pilot run data on the change in the DRA efficiency. To illustrate the application of the methodology, examples of pumping oil and petroleum products with added agents in various concentrations are discussed. On the basis of the experimental data, an adequate mathematical model of the DRA efficiency reduction along the length of the main pipeline for different concentrations of introduced agent was obtained.

This paper describes the investigations performed to better understand two-stage rotor speed matching in a contrarotating fan. In addition, this study develops a comprehensive measuring and communication system for a contrarotating fan using ZigBee network. The investigation method is based on three-dimensional RANS simulations; the RANS equations are solved by the numerical method in conjunction with a SST turbulence model. A wireless measurement system using big data method is first designed, and then a comparison is done with experimental measurements to outline the capacity of the numerical method. The results show that when contrarotating fan worked under designed speed, performance of two-stages rotors could not be matched as the designed working condition was deviated. Rotor 1 had huge influences on flow rate characteristics of a contrarotating fan. Rotor 2 was influenced by flow rates significantly. Under large flow rate condition, the power capability of rotor 2 became very weak; under working small flow rate condition, overloading would take place to class II motor. In order to solve the performance mismatch between two stages of CRF under nondesigned working conditions, under small flow rate condition, the priority shall be given to increase of the speed of rotor 1, while the speed of rotor 2 shall be reduced appropriately; under large flow rate condition, the speed of rotor 1 shall be reduced and the speed of rotor 2 shall be increased at the same time.
