The twelfth session of the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) held in Bielefeld, Germany, in August 2000, set out to explore, under the title ‘Action, Structure, Coherence’, the relationship between the actor and text – and specifically between actors trained in the Odin and other physically-rooted traditions and texts of the supposedly ‘classical’, text-based theatre of western Europe. David Korish here reports on three encounters between different pairs of actors and their texts, and their several means of developing a dynamic physical score appropriate to the text concerned. The co-founder and director of Teatro Abya Yala, an independent theatre company based in San José, Costa Rica, David Korish is also a member of the faculty of the School of Dramatic Arts of the National University of Costa Rica.

ResumenEl presente artículo forma parte una investigación más amplia, cuyo tema es la construcción social del patrimonio urbano y arquitectónico en la ciudad de San José, Costa Rica. El proyecto tiene por objetivo analizar la forma en que se ha construido el concepto de patrimonio en Costa Rica, específicamente en la ciudad de San José, su capital. En este texto se realiza una revisión de los postulados de los principales autores de la corriente de los estudios culturales, para definir un esquema de análisis aplicable al caso de estudio. El artículo se estructura en cuatro apartados: inicia con la obra de los pioneros de este tipo de estudios en Inglaterra, luego se analiza su repercusión en otras latitudes, por ejemplo, el desarrollo de los estudios poscoloniales en lugares como la India, para luego pasar a los trabajos de autores latinoamericanos, y finalmente hacer referencia a su impacto en el desarrollo de los estudios culturales en Costa Rica.AbstractThis article is part of a wider investigation; the theme is the social construction of urban and architectural heritage in San Jose City, Costa Rica. The project aims to analyze how the concept of heritage has been built in Costa Rica, specifically in San Jose City, the capital. In this paper is a review of the postulates of the principal authors of the cultural studies to define a scheme applicable to the case study analysis. The article is divided into four sections: begins with the work of the pioneers of this type of study in England, then its impact is analyzed elsewhere, for example, the development of postcolonial studies in India , the work of Latin American authors , and finally make reference to their impact on the development of cultural studies in Costa Rica.

This paper will study the use of Spanglish in Costa Rican advertising. The significance of this research lies in the fact that although Spanglish is commonly found in Latin American Spanish, especially in advertising, the relationship of these two fields has rarely been analyzed in Costa Rica. Thus, this study can provide important insights into the use of Spanglish and its impact on advertising in commercial and social terms.Se examina el uso del espanglish en el lenguaje publicitario en Costa Rica. El valor de esta investigación radica en el hecho de que aunque el espanglish es habitual en el español de América, especialmente en la publicidad, la dinámica de estos dos temas ha sido escasamente analizada en Costa Rica. Por lo tanto, este estudio nos ofrece aportes importantes en el uso del espanglish, y su efecto en la publicidad, en términos comerciales y sociales.

En este artículo se exponen algunos resultados de un trabajo más amplio ligado al estudio de las políticas públicas educativas en el nivel superior que incluye, la transición del Estado mexicano por el periodo de 1988-2006-2011 con ciertos rasgos de comparación en instituciones de educación superior en nuestro continente. Especialmente se presenta una apretada síntesis del último capítulo de la referida investigación, el cual se complementan algunos casos genéricos de universidades públicas convencionales ante el reto de la incorporación de la ESaD de países como Brasil, Venezuela, Chile, Argentina y Costa Rica, Perú, Colombia, entre otros países de la región. Palabras clave: Políticas universitarias, educación superior a distancia, educación virtual. Abstract This article presents the results of a larger work linked to the study of educational public policies on the upper level that includes the transition from Mexican State for the 1988-2006-2011 period compared with certain features of education institutions higher in our continent.  Especially we present a brief summary of the last chapter of that investigation, which complement some generic conventional public universities facing the challenge of incorporating the ESaD of countries like Brazil, Venezuela, Chile, Argentina and Costa Rica, Perú, Colombia, among other countries in the region. Keywords: University policies, higher distance education, virtual education.

José Concepción Sotillo Picornell (1886-1957) fue un fotógrafo y periodista venezolano radicado en Costa Rica entre 1910 y 1935. Este precursor de la fotografía técnica en el país, apasionado de la vieja escuela inglesa e intenso defensor de la naturalidad y la verdad transmitidas por medio de la imagen será el primero en el país en discutir sobre la relación entre arte, ética y fotografía. Desde el Estudio Sotillo, uno de los más reconocidos y emblemáticos estudios fotográficos josefinos de la época, registrará con su lente a costarricenses de todas las clases sociales de inicios del siglo XX. José Sotillo Picornell (1886-1957) was a Venezuelan journalist and photographer based in Costa Rica between 1910 and 1935. Precursor of technical photography in Costa Rica, passionate of the old English school and intense defender of the naturalness and the truth transmitted through the image, he will be the first person in the country to discuss the relationship between art, ethics and photography. From the Sotillo Studio, one of the most recognized and iconic photographic studios of San José at the time, he records with his lens all social classes of Costa Ricans from the beginning of the XXth century.

ResumenEl desarrollo de biobancos conlleva diversas interrogantes. Nuestro objetivo se circunscribe a cuestiones de confidencialidad y confianza pública en la ciencia y las instituciones. Un problema actual y acuciante en investigaciones biomédicas transnacionales, es la recolección de muestras para almacenamiento y exportación con consentimientos abiertos, con riesgo de violación de la privacidad personal. La necesidad de contar con biobancos para investigación, de proteger el reparto de beneficios de la investigación y la participación de las minorías étnicas presentes en América Latina, nos lleva a proponer una democratización de los biobancos sobre la base de la estructura de Derechos Humanos de la Región, representada por el Pacto de San José de Costa Rica.Palabras clave: Democratizar, biobanco, privacidad, confidencialidad, datos sensibles, muestras biológicas, investigaciones biomédicas transnacionales, dignidad.***************************************************Proposal to “democratize” the benefits of bio-banks in Latin AmericaAbstractThe development of bio-banks carries several questions.
