The use of electronic slide presentations (ESP), usually through PowerPoint or Prezi software, has become widespread in higher education and is part of the expectations and perceptions of both teachers and students of how a successful and quality class should be. Is this dissemination of ESP use justified by the pedagogical quality fostered in learning? While its use can help focus attention on the content of the subject during classes, there are also limitations in this process, both in the dimension of teaching, by the teacher, and in the dimension of learning, by the student. This paper seeks to provide a contribution to the debate on this topic, and the advantages and limitations in using ESP. It is concluded that there is a need, on the one hand, to define the use of ESP, by assaying their application, as well as, on the other hand, to simultaneously develop other pedagogical ways of teaching, whose articulation can make the student’s role more active and pertinent, and enable the feedback to the student on the part of the teacher, so that it may be possible to regulate the teaching and learning process in a timely manner.

PurposeDue to rapid changes in the future labor market, transferable skills are recognized as a vital learning outcome for students in undergraduate higher education. However, ambiguities surrounding the concept and content of transferable skills hamper the actual teaching and learning of transferable skills. Consequently, there is a great need for an overview of the literature on transferable skills to qualify and develop the approaches to transferrable skills in higher education. This study aims to outline a typology of how transferable skills are conceptualized in health sciences education, that is, medicine, nursing and related health professionals’ education.Design/methodology/approachThe study was a mixed studies literature review, which included quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods studies. A seven-stage sequential exploratory synthesis of the included studies was conducted.FindingsThis review showed that transferable skills reflected three main conceptualizations: Program Requirements, Employability and Holistic Development. Overall, the global methodological quality of the empirical studies of interventions to further transferable skills development in health science education was weak.Research limitations/implicationsThis study aids clear conceptualization in future empirical studies.Practical implicationsBy distinguishing between three main conceptualizations of transferable skills, this study's typology supports alignment in transferable skills curricula because conceptually sound learning objectives provide teachers and students in health sciences education with a clear purpose and direct educators' choice of relevant teaching and assessment strategies.Originality/valueThis review – the first of its kind – contributes to conceptualization of transferable skills as the basis for curriculum development and research.

Lesson study (LS), as a model for improving teaching and learning, has tremendous merits for both teachers and students during learning-teaching procedures. Thus, this study can serve in developing an awareness of the pre-service teachers' educators (PSTEs) toward LS as a collaborative professional development model. This study, therefore, aimed to explore the perception of participants who were selected purposively (i.e. using a purposive sample) from the PSTEs at faculty of education-Amran university, Yemen, about LS and its implementation (LSIs). To this end, an open-ended interview was conducted with six interviewees, participants mentioned above, in the second semester of the academic year (2017/2018s). The most important result of this study was that all of the PSTEs participated in this study were not aware about the LS and LSIs, too. Based on the study's results, some recommendations were recommended.

AbstractEducational institutions all over the world realize the importance of promoting international cooperation. In order to stay competitive in such fields like education, research, innovations it is no longer enough to count on only internal resources. Exchange of experience, knowledge sharing, benchmarking provide possibilities for universities to constantly remain updated on modern know-hows.New opportunities for improving the quality of higher education in Belarus are provided by different international programs and projects. Among them there is the project of the EU Program ERASMUS + CBHE “University Teaching and Learning Enhancement” / UniTeLE, which has been implemented since 2019. The project coordinator is Linnaeus University (Sweden). In the framework of the ERASMUS + UniTeLE project, a consortium of Belarusian universities has conducted a higher education quality research. The purpose of this research is to identify areas for improving the quality of higher education in Belarus. The research was carried out on the basis of a sociological survey of a representative sampling of teachers, staff and students of six Belarusian universities (more than 350 respondents from Minsk, Gomel, Brest, Gorki, Polotsk, Grodno were interviewed). Both SWOT analysis of higher education quality in Belarus and focus group of possible improvement were performed. The discussion was attended by work groups of 25 leaders, teachers and students from each of the Belarusian universities of the project consortium. The following fundamental research results should be noted. Among the strengths of Belarusian universities are: specialization in the regions, the system of additional adult education, and practical experience of teachers (2/3 of respondents). 58% of respondents are confident in the advantages of innovative educational technologies used by teachers, 47% indicated a low intensity of innovation implementation. Respondents noted the high level of Hard Skills competencies of the teaching staff and insufficiently of Soft Skills competencies for both teachers and students. The respondents identified outdated educational technologies and methods and the content of curricula as the fundamental weakness of Belarusian education. The following areas of quality improvement have been identified as the most important for Belarusian universities: -the development of Soft Skills competencies of both teachers and students to provide their close interaction;-the development of Soft Skills competencies among students to provide their close interaction with employers (the development of job search skills, entrepreneurial activity);-the introduction of active teaching and learning methods, the development of interactive educational technologies;-the inсlusion of students in the process of education quality internal assessment;-systematic assessment of teachers, including the process of applying for a job, teacher academic development planning (HR management). For the practical improvement in the suggested areas, it is advisable to create Life Long Learning Centres and Centres of Academic Development of teachers in Belarusian universities, as well as a student-oriented quality assessment system. To improve the quality and competitiveness of Belarusian education, it is also advisable to develop international cooperation and networking among universities. The positive experience of such projects as TEMPUS ECOTESY, ERASMUS + UniTeLE, ERASMUS + BELL and others, can contribute to such cooperation and interaction.

The problem statement is connected with the paradoxical nature of modern academic reflection regarding the prospects not only for the development, but also for the survival of universities. Adherents of the alarmist approach justify the strengthening of the trend of academic capitalism, which represents a landslide increasing commercialization of all types of university activities, with a reduction in socio-humanitarian areas and the transition to an entrepreneurial post-academic university culture. Accordingly, the classical format of the university is declared to be dying, and the values of traditional academic culture are blurred and even ruined. Clarification and correction of concepts were required due to the fact, that digitalization is often considered as a process, and digital transformation is considered as the completion of the path of strategic and operational transformations that ensure competitiveness in the modern world. The authors insist that digital transformation is also procedural, so it would be more correct to designate the essence of these changes in modern higher education as an institutional purposeful transition to the latest technologies that provide opportunities for a variety of formats and personalization of the educational process. Clarification and expansion of the main drivers of digital transformation in modern higher education, in turn, indicate that the process of digital transformation, presenting intermediate results of achieving goals, will also remain open. The article presents an analysis of digital transformation in the practices of interaction between teachers and students, with an emphasis on the fact that the main goal of the teacher is his creative support, and the main goal of the student is the transition from the necessary development of modern specifics of the profession to the formation of a broader personal resource potential in the conditions of rapidly increasing changes. It is also important that digital transformation requires not only the consolidation of educational needs and skills during the life of university graduates, but also, first of all, their teachers. The authors note the discursiveness of the problem of the advantages and negatives of the digital educational environment, arguing that the understanding of modern students is focused on the need to implement early and systemic transformational changes in teaching and learning in the new digital landscape. The article concludes with updated conclusions and clarifies operational actions that contribute to achieving the goals of the transition to digital universities.
