Minimizing Carbon Footprint by Smart Sustainable Reservoir Management

Abstract Sustainability and reducing carbon footprint has attracted attention in the oil and gas industry to optimize recovery and increase efficiency. The 4th Industrial Revolution has made an enormous impact in the oil and gas industry and on analyzing carbon footprint reduction opportunities. This allows classification of various reservoir operations, installation of permanent sensors and robots on the field, and reduction of overall power consumption. We present an overview of new AI approaches for optimizing reservoir performance while reducing their carbon footprint. We will outline the significant carbon emissions contributors for field operations and how their impact will change throughout the production's lifecycle from a reservoir. Based on this analysis, we will outline via an AI-driven optimization framework areas of improvement to reduce the carbon footprint considering the uncertainty. We analyzed the framework's performance on a synthetic reservoir model with several producing wells, water, and CO2 injecting wells. Beneficial in reducing carbon emissions from the field is the reuse and injection of CO2 for enhancing hydrocarbon production from the reservoir. One hundred different scenarios were then investigated utilizing an innovative autoregressive network model to determine the impact of these components on the overall carbon emission of the field and determine its uncertainty. The conclusions from the analysis were then incorporated into a data-driven optimization routine to minimize carbon footprint while maximizing reservoir performance. The final optimization results of the showcase outlined the ability to reduce the carbon footprint significantly.

The petroleum (oil, gas and LNG) business environment in 2020 was adverse. Two factors disrupted the foundations of the global oil and gas industry. First, the COVID-19 global pandemic caused an unprecedented reduction of demand that combined with high levels of production resulted in oversupply of oil, gas and LNG. This gap between supply and demand resulted in a collapse in commodity prices, reduced revenues and cancelling or deferral of investment. Second, societal awareness of the impact of climate change on planet Earth increased. Pressure to reduce carbon emissions and a concomitant societal-shift against carbon-emissions intensive petroleum-based forms of energy generation intensified. Many major players in the petroleum industry re-framed their strategies to focus on energy supply in general and in some cases plan to cease their exploration, development and production activities in the coming decades. In Australia, in part global factors manifested in the deferral of investment decisions on three LNG investments. The Australian Government signalled that gas developments would be a critical part of Australia’s post-COVID recovery and that management of abandonment and decommissioning liabilities would be a factor in the approval of transactions leading to a change in ownership. This paper will describe each of the factors faced by the industry in 2020 and frame the issues facing the petroleum industry in 2021 and beyond.

The article is devoted to the consideration of geopolitical challenges for the analysis of geoenvironmental risks (GERs) in the hydrocarbon development of the Arctic territory. Geopolitical risks (GPRs), like GERs, can be transformed into opposite external environment factors of oil and gas industry facilities in the form of additional opportunities or threats, which the authors identify in detail for each type of risk. This is necessary for further development of methodological base of expert methods for GER management in the context of the implementational proposed two-stage model of the GER analysis taking to account GPR for the improvement of effectiveness making decisions to ensure optimal operation of the facility oil and gas industry and minimize the impact on the environment in the geopolitical conditions of the Arctic.The authors declare no conflict of interest

The implementation of plastic details in various constructions enables to reduce the prime cost and labor intensity of machine and device manufacturing, decrease the weight of design and improve their quality and reliability at the same time. The studies were carried out with the aim of labor productivity increase and substitution of colored and black metals with plastic masses. For this purpose, the details with certain characteristics were selected for further implementation of developed technological process in oil-gas industry. The paper investigates the impact of cylinder and compression mold temperature on the quality parameters (shrinkage and hardness) of plastic details in oil-field equipment. The accessible boundaries of quality indicators of the details operated in the equipment of exploration, drilling and exploitation of oil and gas industry are studied in a wide range of mode parameters. The mathematic dependences between quality parameters (shrinkage and hardness) of the details on casting temperature are specified.

The article discusses issues related to the impact of climate change on the objects of the oil and gas industry. The main trends in climate change on a global and regional (on the territory of Russian Federation) scale are outlined. Possible approaches to the identification and assessment of climate risks are discussed. The role of climatic risks as physical factors at various stages of development and implementation of oil and gas projects is shown. Based on the example of oil and gas facilities in the Tomsk region, a qualitative assessment of the level of potential risk from a weather and climatic perspective is given. Approaches to creating a risk management and adaptation system to climate change are presented.

Since the beginning of the 19th century, we have assisted major proliferation of the oil and gas industry. This phenomenon of exponential growth is due to the fact that oil companies hold the world’s oil monopoly on the extraction, processing and commercialization. Therefore, as being one of the most influential sectors in the world, is crucial to strictly regulate how oil and gas contracts concerns the potential environmental and social impacts arising from the conduct of petroleum operations and how such behavior affects the human rights. As a matter of fact, the social issues field is an emerging area, and despite such importance, oil contracts do not often deal with them in great detail, corresponding to an actual emptiness of the human rights provisions. In terms of responsibly, oil companies, have an inalienable obligation to ensure that their actions do not violate human rights or contribute for their violation. This study aims to trace a detailed analysis of the impact of the oil and gas agreements in human rights. In order to fully comprehend the deep effects of this industry, we will examine, in detail, numerous of published oil and gas agreements, as well as, decode which are the real standards and practices accepted by this industry. We will use a deductive and speculative reasoning. We will try to demonstrate how incipient and short protection is given to human rights and what responsible conducts must urgently be developed.

Экономической составляющей нашей страны была и остается топливно-энергетическая промышленность, в частности нефтегазовая отрасль промышленности. Снижение объемов добычи жидких углеводородов из-за истощения огромного количества эксплуатируемых скважин заставляет искать пути решения возникающих проблем. Одним из решений такого рода проблем видится увеличение числа эксплуатации нефтегазовых скважин, которые сталкиваются с проблемами из-за высокого содержания в составе вредных компонентов, в частности сероводорода. Ведущие нефтяные компании имеют свое видение решения этих проблем. Исследования ученых в этой области предлагают свои решения подобного рода вопросов. Одним из таких предложений является разработка технологии утилизации сероводорода путем окисления газов кислородом воздуха на твердых катализаторах. В статье предлагается метод выделения серы из высококонцентрированного сероводородсодержащего газа в кипящем слое катализатора. Авторами проведены испытания предлагаемого метода на опытной установке и даны рекомендации по проведению такого рода исследований. The economic component of our country has been and remains the fuel and energy industry, in particular the oil and gas industry. The decline in liquid hydrocarbon production, due to the depletion of a huge number of exploited wells, makes us look for ways to solve the problems that arise. One of the solutions to this kind of problems seems to be an increase in the number of oil and gas wells that encounter problems due to the high content of harmful components, in particular hydrogen sulfide. Leading oil campaigns have their own vision for solving these problems. Researches of scientists in this area offer their solutions to this kind of issues. One of such proposals is the development of technology for the utilization of hydrogen sulfide by oxidizing gases with atmospheric oxygen on solid catalysts. The article proposes a method for the separation of sulfur from highly concentrated hydrogen sulfide-containing gas in a fluidized bed of catalyst. The authors tested the proposed method in a pilot plant and made recommendations for conducting this kind of research.

Three core industry sectors of the Nigerian economy were examined namely: Banking Industry, Oil and Gas Industry, and Agricultural Industry in order to examine the level of impact ICTs have on the overall Nigerian economy.

Abstract Digital transformation is one of the most discussed themes across the globe. The disruptive potential arising from the joint deployment of IoT, robotics, AI and other advanced technologies is projected to be over $300 trillion over the next decade. With the advances and implementation of these technologies, they have become more widely-used in all aspects of oil and gas industry in several processes. Yet, as it is a relatively new area in petroleum industry with promising features, the industry overall is still trying to adapt to IR 4.0. This paper examines the value that Industry 4.0 brings to the oil and gas upstream industry. It delineates key Industry 4.0 solutions and analyzes their impact within this segment. A comprehensive literature review has been carried out to investigate the IR 4.0 concept's development from the beginning, the technologies it utilizes, types of technologies transferred from other industries with a longer history of use, robustness and applicability of these methods in oil and gas industry under current conditions and the incremental benefits they provide depending on the type of the field are addressed. Real field applications are illustrated with applications indifferent parts of the world with challenges, advantages and drawbacks discussed and summarized that lead to conclusions on the criteria of application of machine learning technologies.

This study assessed the impact of project management methodologies (PMMs) on project success in the oil and gas industry in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It also explored the different project methodologies used along with their strengths and weaknesses. Quantitative approach with the support of qualitative interviews was used to achieve the objectives of this research. A total of 95 survey responses were received and 17 interviews were conducted. Projects in the oil and gas industry are more about safety than speed, and hence, the use of comprehensive methodologies and applying the relevant methodology elements are important for oil and gas projects. Furthermore, the companies in the oil and gas industry in Bahrain have to pay more attention to their project management methodologies and get it evolved and improved over time to achieve higher project success rates.

In this study, a relationship between the mood of news and the response of the oil and gas industry index of the Russian Federation was revealed. The empirical base of the study included 8.5 million news from foreign sources. Research methodology: fuzzy sets, naive Bayesian classifier, Pearson correlation coefficient. As a result of the research, it was discovered that: 1) negative news affects the stronger than the positive on the stock index; 2) news on companies affect the value of the index, and news on the industry affect the volume of trading; 3) the sanctions did not significantly affect the coverage of Russian oil and gas companies.
