Abstract In most biological processes, diffusion plays a critical role in transferring various bio-molecules to transfer desirable locations in an effective and energy-efficient manner. How fast molecules are transferred is measured by diffusion coefficients. Since each bio-molecules, in particular, signaling molecules have their unique diffusion coefficients and quantifying the diffusion coefficients help us to understand various time scales of both physiological and pathological processes in biological systems. Moreover, since diffusion profiles of a diffusant vary in different micro-environments of cell membranes, accurate diffusion coefficient also can provide a good picture of membrane landscapes as well as interactions of different membrane constituents. Currently, only a few experimental methods are available to assess the diffusion coefficient of a biomolecule of interest in live cells including Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching (FRAP). FRAP was developed to study diffusion processes of biomolecules in the cell membranes in the 1970s. Albeit its long history, the main principle of FRAP analysis has remained unchanged since its inception: fitting FRAP data to a theoretical diffusion model for the best fitting diffusion coefficient or using the relation between the half time of recovery and ROI size. In this study, we developed a flexible yet versatile confocal FRAP data analysis framework based on linear regression analysis which allows FRAP users to determine the diffusion from either single or multiple FRAP data points without data fitting. We also validated this approach for a series of fluorescently labeled soluble and membrane-bound proteins and lipids.

The absorption and desorption of water by seven composite materials are diffusion processes, with the diffusion coefficient decreasing with concentration. The magnitude of the diffusion coefficients were consistent with diffusion occurring in the resin phase. Although most materials showed reversible behavior during repeated sorption-desorption cycles, one material showed irreversible breakdown.

In order to find a simple and reliable method for the calculation of the diffusion coefficient, the correlation equation of concentration and distance in the form of complementary error function was derived from solving an ordinary differential equation of the diffusion equation. A disperse dye in paste was treated at 170°C–190°C for 3–4 h for the sublimation diffusion into polyethylene terephthalate using a film roll method. Quadratic regression analysis on the profile of dye concentration–distance was used to determine the surface concentration. The diffusion coefficient of each layer was calculated by obtaining the variable value of the complementary error function from the ratio of the mean dye concentration of each layer to the surface concentration. From linear regression analysis on the Arrhenius plot of the logarithm of the diffusion coefficient versus the reciprocal of absolute temperature, the correlation coefficient for the diffusion of 3 h was 0.9978 and that of 4 h was 0.9991. Thus, it was expected that the diffusion coefficients determined by the equation of complementary error function adopted in this experiment were reliable. The activation energy of diffusion for 3 h was 30.5 kcal mol−1 and that for 4 h was 27.4 kcal mol−1.

ABSTRACTThe rate of oxidation of metals at high temperatures is usually controlled by the transport of metal ions or oxygen through the growing film of oxide on the surface. Since many technologically useful alloys (eg steels, nickelbased alloys) are based on the 3d transition metals, the transport properties of the oxides of these elements are of particular interest. In the temperature range 500–1000°C, where these alloys are used, the important transport paths in the oxide are not those that involve diffusion in the bulk crystal lattice, but other “short-circuit” paths. Basic experiments on the oxidation of nickel and direct tracer measurements of diffusion coefficients show that rain boundaries are the most important short-circuit paths under protective oxidation conditions. Similar conclusions can be drawn for other metals including chromium. The methods used in this work have been extended to study the way in which a surface treatment with CeO2 reduces the oxidation rate of nickel, apparently by inhibiting the outward transport of metal ions along grain boundaries. Segregation of cerium ions to grain boundaries increases the diffusion coefficient of nickel; the inhibition is caused instead by particulates of CeO2 in the middle region of the scale.

This study examined fruit intake among 276 female Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) community college students. Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors associated with fruit intake were determined. The attitudes which are potential predictors of daily fruit intake were also examined. Analysis showed that 33% ate fewer than the minimum recommended two daily servings of fruit. Students reported that fruit gave them energy, taste and cost were not barriers to consumption and that it would not be difficult to increase daily fruit consumption. A linear regression analysis revealed that beliefs that eating fruit leads to good health, having a habit of eating fruit, feeling energy, and weight loss accounted for 30% of the variance in fruit intake.

Some students perceive lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) positively, even though LGBT is a sexual deviation that is not appropriate with values and norms. There are several factors that influence an individual's perception of LGBT, including sexual identity. This study aims at looking at the contribution of sexual identity to student perceptions about LGBT. This research used a quantitative approach with a descriptive method and a simple linear regression analysis. The sample of this research was 385 taken from 15.752 undergraduate students of Universitas Negeri Padang which the sample was drawn by using the Slovin formula and continued with a Proportional Random Sampling technique. The instrument used was the Guttman model's sexual identity scale and the scale of students' perceptions of the LGBT Likert model. After analyzing the data with the descriptive technique and the simple linear regression analysis, the results showed that sexual identity significantly contributed to the students' perceptions of LGBT. This research has implications as a basis for counselors to help students avoid sexual identity mismatches and prevent the emergence of positive perceptions of LGBT.

The progress of the Islamic bank cannot be separated from the role of its customers who give trust to the bank to deposit their financial assets. It is a fact many groups of customers decide to be the customers of the Islamic bank because of their religiosity. The other influences factor of a customer’s decision is the quality of the product. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of product quality and level of customers’ religiosity towards customers’ decision whether to keep their funds in Syariah Mandiri Bank, Branch of Purwokerto, or not. The analytical tool used was multiple linear regression analysis, with a sample of 100 customers. The results indicate Y = 5,046 + 0,101X1 + 0,218X2. Based on F, it can be seen that both variables of product quality and religiosity simultanously affect the customers’ decision to keep theirfunds in BSM Branch of Purwokerto. Based on t test, it can be seen that independently, either variable of product quality or variables of religiosityinfluences the customers’ decision to keep their funds in BSM Branch of Purwokerto.
