Abstract Hybrid hydrogel was synthesized by immobilizing TiO2 in polyethylene glycol diacrylate (TiO2@PEGDA) as an efficient adsorbent with photocatalysis property for bisphenol A (BPA) elimination. TiO2@PEGDA exhibited spherical and rough structure with limited crystallinity and abundant functional groups. The contact angle was 61.96°, indicating that TiO2@PEGDA is hydrophilic. The swelling capacity of TiO2@PEGDA (9.0%) was decreased compared with pristine PEGDA (15.6%). Adsorption results demonstrated that the maximum adsorption capacity of TiO2@PEGDA (101.4 mg/g) for BPA was slightly higher than pristine PEGDA (97.68 mg/g). The adsorption capacity was independent with pH at pH < 8.0, and decreased obviously when the value of pH was higher than 8.0. The adsorption behavior was fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Freundlich isotherm model. Both ΔG0 and ΔH0 were negative, indicating that BPA adsorbed on TiO2@PEGDA was an exothermic and spontaneous process. Regeneration study was performed by photocatalysis, and the adsorption capacity was 85.6% compared with the initial capacity after four cycles of illumination, indicating that TiO2@PEGDA could be recycled without significant loss of adsorption capacity. Consequently, TiO2@PEGDA can serve as an eco-friendly and promising material for efficiently adsorbing BPA with self-clean property.

The biosorption of lead ions (Pb2+) onto lyophilized fungus Aspergillus niveus was investigated in aqueous solutions in a batch system with respect to pH, contact time and initial concentration of the ions at 30 °C. The maximum adsorption capacity of lyophilized A. niveus was found to be 92.6 mg g−1 at pH 5.1 and the biosorption equilibrium was established about in 30 min. The adsorption capacity obtained is one of the highest value among those reported in the literature. The kinetic data were analyzed using the pseudo-first-order kinetic, pseudo-second-order kinetic, and intraparticle diffusion equations. Kinetic parameters, such as rate constants, equilibrium adsorption capacities, and related correlation coefficients for the kinetic models were calculated and discussed. It was found that the adsorption of lead ions onto lyophilized A. niveus biomass fit the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm parameters for the lead ion adsorption were applied and the Langmuir model agreed better with the adsorption of lead ions onto lyophilized A. niveus.

Phosphate adsorption from aqueous solution using slag was investigated as the function of pH, contact time and adsorbent dosage. The results showed that the optimum value of pH was 2. Both Langmuir isotherm and Freundlich isotherm model were fit to describe the phosphate adsorption, and the maximum adsorption capacity from Langmuir model calculated was 9.09 mg/L. The adsorption process on slag followed pseudo second-order kinetic. Due to the relatively high adsorption capacity, the slag has the potential for application to removal phosphate from wastewater.

The results of characterization showed that the pore structure and the functional groups were available on adsorbent surface. According to the pH effect experiments, the maximum adsorption capacity was achieved at pH 7. Optimum contact time and initial copper(II) concentration were found at 120 min and 100 mg L-1, respectively. The experimental data were comply with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and Langmuir adsorption isotherm obtained best fitted the adsorption data. The maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbents was found to be 4.73 and 6.46 mg g-1 at optimum conditions.

A magnetically modified rice husk biochar (MBC) was successfully prepared by a hydrothermal method from original biochar (BC) and subsequently used to remove phenanthrene (PHE) from aqueous solutions. The porosity, specific surface area and hydrophobicity of BC were significantly improved (approx. two times) after magnetic modification. The adsorption data fitted well to pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models. Compared with BC, MBC had a faster adsorption rate and higher adsorption capacity of PHE. The adsorption equilibrium for PHE on MBC was achieved within 1.0 h. The maximum adsorption capacity of PHE on MBC was 97.6 mg g −1 based on the analysis of the Sips model, which was significantly higher than that of other sources of BCs. The adsorption mechanism of the two BCs was mainly attributed to the action of surface functional groups and π–π-conjugated reactions. The adsorption of PHE on MBC mainly occurred in the functional groups of C–O and Fe 3 O 4 , but that on BC was mainly in the functional groups of –OH, N–H, C=C and C–O.

Chitosan nanofiber membranes by electrospinning technique were used to remove Cu ( II ) from aqueous solution. The adsorption kinetics, equilibrium isotherms, and pH effect were investigated in batch experiments. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo second-order kinetic models agree well with the experimental data. The chitosan nanofiber membranes are effective for Cu ( II ) adsorption at pH6. Results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of the chitosan nanofiber membranes with Cu ( II ) is 118.62 mg g-1. The chitosan nanofiber membranes can be used as an effective adsorbent for the removal of Cu ( II ) in aqueous solution due to high adsorption capacity.

This study was carried out to investigate the efficiency of raw pili shell (RPS) and the surface modified pili shell using EDTA (EMPS) and oxalic acid (OMPS). A comparative study on the adsorption capacity of the adsorbents was performed against lead (Pb2+) from aqueous solution. The adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, which showed higher peak of adsorption bands of carboxylic groups on the acid modified pili shells. Scanning electron microscope orSEM was also used to describe the surface morphology of the adsorbents. The linear form of Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied to represent adsorption data. The calculated equilibrium data of Pb (II) best fitted to Langmuir compare to Freundlich isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of 27.03 mg/g and 45.45 mg/g using EMPS and OMPS, respectively. Kinetic sorption models were used to determine the adsorption mechanism and the kinetic data of all the adsorbents correlated (R2=1) wellwith the pseudo second order kinetic model. Among the three adsorbents, OMPS shown higher percent removal of lead compared to RPS and EMPS. The large adsorption capacity rate indicated that chemically modified pili shell in present study has great potential to be used as a cost-effective adsorbent for the removal of lead ions from the water.

An effective chemically modified adsorbent based on sugarcane waste has been prepared by treating with concentrated sulphuric acid in 2:1weight/volume ratio. Thus prepared adsorbent has been found to be effective in the adsorption of chromium from aqueous medium. The efficacy of the adsorbent in the removal of chromium was evaluated by batch adsorption method. The effect of initial concentration, contact time and pH of the solution was investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity onto this adsorbent was found to be 195 mg/g at their optimal pH 1 at which unmodified bagasse has only 58 mg/g. The characterization of adsorbent was done by determining surface area and Boehm’s titration method. Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic model gave better explanation of the adsorption process.

Cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin are the main constituents found in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) bagasse having many surface active sites containing hydroxyl and/or phenolic groups which are effective for chemical modification. The biowaste was first charred with concentrated sulphuric acid and then the charred aminated sugarcane bagasse (CASB) was prepared by reduction followed by oxidation. The developed bio-sorbent was characterized by SEM, TGA/DTA, FTIR and elemental analysis. Batch adsorption methods were carried out to determine Pb+2 sorption capacities at different pH ranges and sorbate concentrations. The maximum adsorption capacity for Pb+2 was found to be 323 mg g-1 with an efficiency of 98% at pH 4.The experimental data showed a good fit to Langmuir isotherm as compared to Freundlich isotherm models. The kinetics was best fitted with the pseudo-second order model. The adsorption equilibrium was attained within 20 min. The high adsorption capacity and fast kinetics results of the charred aminated sugarcane bagasse indicated that it might be potential adsorbent for the removal of lead from contaminated water. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/jncs.v29i0.9235Journal of Nepal Chemical SocietyVol. 29, 2012Page: 34-43Uploaded date : 12/3/2013

In this study, durian (Durio zibethinus Murray) skin was examined for its ability to remove methylene blue (MB) dye from simulated textile wastewater. Adsorption equilibrium and kinetics of MB removal from aqueous solutions at different parametric conditions such as different initial concentrations (2–10 mg/L), biosorbent dosages (0.3–0.7 g) and pH solution (4–9) onto durian skin were studied using batch adsorption. The amount of MB adsorbed increased from 3.45 to 17.31 mg/g with the increase in initial concentration of MB dye; whereas biosorbent dosage increased from 1.08 to 2.47 mg/g. Maximum dye adsorption capacity of the durian skin was found to increase from 3.78 to 6.40 mg/g, with increasing solution pH. Equilibrium isotherm data were analyzed according to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The sorption equilibrium was best described by the Freundlich isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacity of 7.23 mg/g and this was due to the heterogeneous nature of the durian skin surface. Kinetic studies indicated that the sorption of MB dye tended to follow the pseudo second-order kinetic model with promising correlation of 0.9836 < R2 < 0.9918.

Corn stalk was used as the initial material to prepare a corn stalk matrix-g-polyacrylonitrile-based adsorbent. At first, the corn stalk was treated with potassium hydroxide and nitric acid to obtain the corn stalk-based cellulose (CS), and then the CS was modified by 2-bromoisobutyrylbromide (2-BiBBr) to prepare a macroinitiator. After that, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was grafted onto the macroinitiator by single-electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP). A novel adsorbent AO CS-g-PAN was, therefore, obtained by introducing amidoxime groups onto the CS-g-PAN with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH 2 OH · HCl). FTIR, SEM and XPS were applied to characterize the structure of AO CS-g-PAN. The adsorbent was then employed to remove Pb(II) and Cu(II), and it exhibited a predominant adsorption performance on Pb(II) and Cu(II). The effect of parameters, such as temperature, adsorption time, pH and the initial concentration of metal ions on adsorption capacity, were examined in detail during its application. Results suggest that the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) and Cu(II) was 231.84 mg g –1 and 94.72 mg g −1 , and the corresponding removal efficiency was 72.03% and 63%, respectively. The pseudo-second order model was more suitable to depict the adsorption process. And the adsorption isotherm of Cu(II) accorded with the Langmuir model, while the Pb(II) conformed better to the Freundlich isotherm model.
