Flame “cultivation” for weed control was developed about 50 years ago. The practice was very popular with Southern cotton farmers through the 1950s and 1960s, but lost favor when petroleum prices rose drastically in the 1970s. There is now a new interest in the practice of flame cultivation as a partial or total replacement for herbicides in vegetable crops. This interest is fueled by three factors: 1) an increasingly negative public perception of herbicides on vegetables, 2) a very limited selection of herbicides labeled for vegetables, and 3) limited efficacy of some of the herbicides that are registered. Flame cultivation, in combination with mechanical cultivation, can replace or supplement herbicides in some vegetable crops. The mode of action of flame cultivation is the bursting of cell walls in the weeds as the weeds are heated by a carefully directed LP gas flame. With most vegetable crops, the crop plants must be protected in some manner. This can be done with a water shield (flat fan water spray), height differential between weeds and crop, physical shield, etc. Much of the early work on flame cultivation of vegetables was done with sweet corn. Work is now underway on flame cultivation of lima beans and southernpeas, where multiple flame cultivations have proven effective at controlling weeds for which no herbicide is available.

Requirements for modern tomato hybrids are increasing both on the part of consumers and on the part of producers. Producers are interested in hybrids with an original fruit shape, color, taste and aroma. The aim of the research was the variety study of indeterminate F1 tomato hybrids of the breeding company "Gavrish" in JSC "Teplichnoe", Tambov region. The research was carried out in 2017-2018. in summer-autumn turnover in the conditions of JSC "Teplichnoye" in the Tambov region in accordance with generally accepted recommendations for research with vegetable crops in greenhouses. Based on the results of the study of tomato hybrids of the selection of the "Gavrish" company, the enterprise decided to increase the area in the summer-autumn turnover under the F1Panther hybrid.

Vegetable crops are conducting under Farmers Participatory Research Trial in Temperate regions of Kashmir Valley. The trials are designed and managed by farmers, the researchers have only advice for selection of the resource conservation technology (treatments). Farmers have full control over the selection of treatments to be used on his/her field. The main objectives of this type of research is to be established and demonstrate the benefits of resource conservation technologies like raised bed, furrow irrigated planting system, zero tillage etc. over the conventional practices. In these type of trial farmers are briefed about new practices. The participating farmers are encouraged to experiment their own and are given the full control over the selection of subset of resource conservation technologies to be tested on their fields with a view to assess farmer innovation and acceptability.

The purpose of the experimental study was the selection of salt tolerant crops and the search for useful horticultural species for growing them on saline lands. The experimental study was conducted at the University of Algarve, Portugal, in a greenhouse. The following vegetable crops were selected for research: lettuce (Lactuca sativaL), New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia tetragonioides) and garden purslane (Portulaca oleracea). Experimental results showed that New Zealand spinach and garden purslane have high potential as species resistant to high salt content and are therefore recommended for cultivation in order to reduce soil salinity. The above crops, mainly New Zealandspinach, are good types of garden crops with high useful qualities and productivity. Therefore, it has been shown that this method is a clean and environmentally friendly tool to prevent salinization and maintain the sustainability of agricultural systems

Twenty S5 sweet corn lines containing the opaque-2 gene that increases Iysine  contents as well as the sugary-2 gene were evaluated. The lines were crossed with three testers: one unrelated inbred line, and two related synthetic varieties. Six commercial and three experimental hybrids were used during the trials. Test crosses were evaluated in two locations of Mexico during 1994 using a randomized complete block designo The experiment's goal was to compare lines' performance in combination with three testers, taking into account yield, soundness, uniformity, and corn quality. The average response of lines combined with testers was superior than that of commercial hybrids for traits such as flowering time and plant and ear height. Performance factors analyzed (ear length, grain color, uniformity, soundness, and number of marketable ears) in trial crosses were superior or equal in average to those in experimental hybrids, but this was not the case with sugar percentage. The best results were observed with the unrelated LD tester inbred line for agronomic traits and performance factors. This study made possible the selection of lines for future breeding based on the above mentioned traits, as well as the general combining ability for ear length and number of green flag leaves.

This chapter examines the controversies surrounding the Minou Drouet affair, with Minou being a previously unknown eight-year-old child poet who had captured public interest. The publisher René Julliard had distributed a selection of her letters and poems in the form of a little pamphlet sent to critics, writers, and friends “to put down a marker” and provide advance publicity for the first commercial edition of Minou's poetry, Arbre, mon ami (Tree, my friend), which was scheduled to appear in January 1956, whereafter it sold forty-five thousand copies. In the meantime, and in the absence of any book publication, the affair took off and developed into a full-scale controversy as the authenticity of Minou's talent was called into question. This chapter considers Minou's story in light of the public perception on child prodigies—initially as objects of collective curiosity, and hereafter as the target of suspicion.

Abstract Two separate trials were conducted. Corn for the first trial was planted on 28 May and for the second trial on 12 Jun, both at the Vegetable Crops Research Farm near Geneva, NY. The plants were arranged in a RCB design with four replicates of nine treatments and one check. Plots consisted of seven 25-ft rows of sweet corn on 30-inch centers with 9-inch plant spacing. Blocks were separated by 25 ft. Treatments involved three applications of each insecticide for controlling naturally intesting Lepidoptera. Foliar sprays were applied with a 5-row CO2-pressurized high-boy tractor-mounted boom, having 3 nozzles per row (one over the top and one drop nozzle on each side) with flat fan 110015 tips, and delivering 30 gpa at 47 psi and 2.5 mph. Silwet L-77 spray adjuvant was applied at 0.1% v/v with all treatments. In the first trial, insecticides were applied on 8, 15, and 23 Aug. Treatments for the second trial were applied on 15, 23 Aug, and 2 Sep. Trials were evalu-ated on 2 and 8 Sep for the respective plots by selecting 25 ears from the five treated rows of each plot and evaluating them for ear injury.

A modified nylon bag technique, described in detail in this paper, appears to be an effective method of selecting for a lower initial rate of digestion (IRD) in alfalfa. Breeding for reduced IRD in alfalfa resulted in a 15% reduction in 4-h dry matter disappearance (DMD) after three cycles of selection (ultimate goal of 25–30 % reduction for a bloat-safe alfalfa). No further reduction in IRD occurred with a 4th cycle of selection. The IRD characteristic appears to be expressed at early stages of vegetative growth (pre-bud to early bud) and not at a more advanced stage of maturity (mid-bud to early bloom). The IRD characteristic also appears to be subject to environmental influence. Alfalfa plants selected for reduced IRD have consistently thicker cell walls compared to the unselected alfalfa check cv. Beaver. The advanced cycle 4 LIRD synthetic is being increased for subsequent pasture trials and assessment of bloat reduction. Relevance Currently, the requirements for modern tomato hybrids are increasing both from consumers and from producers. Modern tomato hybrids in extended circulation should yield at least 60 kg / m2, be distinguished by high quality of fruits, early ripeness, possess manufacturability, resistance to major diseases. Along with the traditional form of fruits, hybrids with original shape, color, taste and aroma are interesting for manufacturers. Methods The aim of the research was the variety study of indeterminant F1 hybrids of tomato breeding of the company "Gavrish" in JSC "Teplichnoye" of the Tambov region. Studies were conducted in 2017-2018 in the extended and summer-autumn turnover in the conditions of JSC "Teplichnoye" of the Tambov region in accordance with generally accepted recommendations for research with vegetable crops in greenhouses. The objects of the study in extended circulation were tomato hybrids: F1 Bao Bab, F1 Baloven, the F1 Torero hybrid was taken as a control. In the summerautumn turnover, a study was made of the rose hybrid – F1 Panthera; the Rosario F1 hybrid was used as a control; a hybrid with a plum-shaped fruit – F1 Armata, control – a hybrid F1 Lezghinka. Results According to the results of the study of tomato hybrids, the selection of the Gavrish company at the enterprise made the decision to grow it in extended circulation and increase the area under F1 Baloven, in the summer-autumn turnover under the F1 Panthera hybrid.

One of the three genes of the endosperm structure is used in the selection of sweet corn; its recessive mutation sh2 activates the accumulation of sucrose in the structural complex of sugars and represses the starch synthesis. Hybrids of "super-sweet" corn have improved grain taste and slower conversion of sugars into starch. Therefore, it is important to use different genetic sources of breeding traits in the creation of a new linear material that meets the requirements of modern heterosis selection of sweet corn. The aim of the work was to study the lines of sweet corn and to identify among them new sources of selectively valuable economic features. A complex assessment of morphological characteristics and productivity of sweet corn lines was carried out. According to the results of study the main morpho-biological traits of sweet corn lines with the mutant sh2 gene, the sources of individual selection valuable peculiarities were identified. Lines SH-234 and SH-936 were marked as donors of plant growth. Lines SH-621, SH-234 and SH-936 were the best in terms of seed productivity of cobs. According to the growing season, all lines are divided into early (4 lines) and medium ripe (6 lines). The lines SH-234, SH-113 (number of grain rows) and SH-621 (number of seeds in a row) were the best in terms of productivity, and lines SH-318 and SH-936 – in terms of the cob length (14.45 cm and 13.26 cm, respectively). Only one line SH-477 had strongly wrinkled seeds. Thus, the studied sweet corn lines were characterized by high genotypic diversity; the SH-936 and SH-621 lines were the best in terms of the trait complex.

A baseline survey was conducted to determine grower fertilizer management practices for five vegetable crops: beans, malanga, potatoes, sweet corn, and squash. This was done in conjunction with a 3-year replicated fertility trial with four vegetable crops (1993–94 through 1995–96) in the Homestead area. Questions included: fertilizer rates and timing, source(s) of fertilizer recommendations, soil and tissue testing, irrigation, changes in practices, summer cover crops, rock plowing, spacing, and type of fertilizer used. Survey results will be presented.
