Study of tomato hybrids in summer-autumn turnover in JSC Teplichnoye, Tambov region

Requirements for modern tomato hybrids are increasing both on the part of consumers and on the part of producers. Producers are interested in hybrids with an original fruit shape, color, taste and aroma. The aim of the research was the variety study of indeterminate F1 tomato hybrids of the breeding company "Gavrish" in JSC "Teplichnoe", Tambov region. The research was carried out in 2017-2018. in summer-autumn turnover in the conditions of JSC "Teplichnoye" in the Tambov region in accordance with generally accepted recommendations for research with vegetable crops in greenhouses. Based on the results of the study of tomato hybrids of the selection of the "Gavrish" company, the enterprise decided to increase the area in the summer-autumn turnover under the F1Panther hybrid.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is considered one of the most valuable and versatile vegetable crops globally and also serves as a significant model species for fruit developmental biology. Despite its significance, a severe genetic bottleneck and intense selection of genotypes with specific qualitative traits have resulted in the prevalence of a restricted number of (geno)types, also causing a lack of diversity across widespread cultivated types. As a result, the re-emergence of landraces as well as traditional and heirloom varieties is largely acknowledged as a countermeasure to restore phenotypic, phytochemical and genetic diversity while enriching the aroma/taste tomato palette. On those grounds, the Cypriot tomato germplasm was assessed and characterized. Ten landrace accessions were evaluated under greenhouse conditions and data were collected for 24 IPGRI discrete phenotypic traits. Grouping of accessions largely reflected the fruit shape and size; four different fruit types were recorded across accessions (flattened, heart-shaped, rounded and highly rounded). Moreover, a single run panel consisting of ten SSRs was developed and applied in order to genetically characterize 190 Cypriot genotypes and foreign heirloom varieties. Based on genetic indexes it was established that tomato landraces have a rather low level of heterogeneity and genetic variation. Finally, mineral and phytochemical analyses were conducted in order to estimate biochemical attributes (total phenolics, ascorbic acid, lycopene, β-carotene, total soluble content, titratable acidity) across genotypes; thus, ascertaining that the Cypriot panel has a high nutritional value. Due to the thermo-drought adaptation and tolerance of these genotypes, the current study serves as a roadmap for future breeding efforts in order to incorporate desirable traits or develop novel tomato lines combining resilience and alimentary value.

Vegetable crops are conducting under Farmers Participatory Research Trial in Temperate regions of Kashmir Valley. The trials are designed and managed by farmers, the researchers have only advice for selection of the resource conservation technology (treatments). Farmers have full control over the selection of treatments to be used on his/her field. The main objectives of this type of research is to be established and demonstrate the benefits of resource conservation technologies like raised bed, furrow irrigated planting system, zero tillage etc. over the conventional practices. In these type of trial farmers are briefed about new practices. The participating farmers are encouraged to experiment their own and are given the full control over the selection of subset of resource conservation technologies to be tested on their fields with a view to assess farmer innovation and acceptability.

The purpose of the experimental study was the selection of salt tolerant crops and the search for useful horticultural species for growing them on saline lands. The experimental study was conducted at the University of Algarve, Portugal, in a greenhouse. The following vegetable crops were selected for research: lettuce (Lactuca sativaL), New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia tetragonioides) and garden purslane (Portulaca oleracea). Experimental results showed that New Zealand spinach and garden purslane have high potential as species resistant to high salt content and are therefore recommended for cultivation in order to reduce soil salinity. The above crops, mainly New Zealandspinach, are good types of garden crops with high useful qualities and productivity. Therefore, it has been shown that this method is a clean and environmentally friendly tool to prevent salinization and maintain the sustainability of agricultural systems

ABSTRACT The market requirement regarding fruit type varies from region to region and it is necessary to produce cultivars with different patterns of fruit morphology. Therefore, the aim of this study was to select lines with resistance to tomato leafminer and different fruit shapes in order to meet the different market segments. Seventy-six lines and pre-selected populations were used for pest resistance together with four other susceptible controls (TOM-584, TOM-684, NC-123S, and Santa Clara) and two wild accessions (Solanum pennellii ‘LA 716’ and S. habrochaites var. glabratum ‘PI-127826’) considered resistant. The experiment consisted of tests of resistance to the tomato leafminer Tuta absoluta. The selection of lines was efficient, being obtained 33 lines or populations resistant to the tomato leafminer that comprise the market segments of the types of multilocular fruit, Santa Cruz, Saladette or Italian, as well as intermediate standards of fruits.

ABSTRACT The use of dwarf lines to obtain mini-tomato hybrids has provided agronomic and economic benefits. In Brazil, round tomatoes predominate over other varieties. The benefits of using a dwarf parent in round tomato hybrids has yet to be explored, making it important to develop dwarf round tomato lines. Backcrossing is the most suitable method to develop these lines. Evaluation and selection of the dwarf populations can improve the development of such lines. Thus, the aim of this study was to select BC1F2 populations of dwarf round tomatoes with agronomic potential and high-quality fruit. The study was conducted at the Vegetable Experimental Station of the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU). A randomized block design was used, with 15 treatments and three replicates. The genetic material analyzed consisted of 12 BC1F2 dwarf tomato populations, plus both parents (recurrent and donor) and a commercial hybrid. The characteristics assessed were: average fruit weight (g), total soluble solids (ºBrix), number of locules (locules per fruit-1), fruit shape, pulp thickness (cm), longitudinal (cm) and transverse fruit diameter (cm), internode length (cm) and plant height (cm). The data were submitted to mean testing, multivariate analyses and a selection index. In general, average fruit weight in the dwarf populations increased significantly after the first backcross, with some fruits exhibiting a similar shape to round tomatoes. Selection of the populations UFU-DTOM7, UFU-DTOM10, UFU-DTOM5, UFU-DTOM9, and UFU-DTOM3 resulted in an estimated 6% increase in the number of locules, transverse diameter, TD/LD ratio and average fruit weight. The BC1F2 dwarf populations UFU-DTOM7 and UFU-DTOM10 were the most promising for develop inbred lines with round fruits. Despite the considerable progress achieved in this study, we suggest a second backcross, in order to obtain lines and, posteriorly, hybrids with round fruits and compact plants.

Relevance Currently, the requirements for modern tomato hybrids are increasing both from consumers and from producers. Modern tomato hybrids in extended circulation should yield at least 60 kg / m2, be distinguished by high quality of fruits, early ripeness, possess manufacturability, resistance to major diseases. Along with the traditional form of fruits, hybrids with original shape, color, taste and aroma are interesting for manufacturers. Methods The aim of the research was the variety study of indeterminant F1 hybrids of tomato breeding of the company "Gavrish" in JSC "Teplichnoye" of the Tambov region. Studies were conducted in 2017-2018 in the extended and summer-autumn turnover in the conditions of JSC "Teplichnoye" of the Tambov region in accordance with generally accepted recommendations for research with vegetable crops in greenhouses. The objects of the study in extended circulation were tomato hybrids: F1 Bao Bab, F1 Baloven, the F1 Torero hybrid was taken as a control. In the summerautumn turnover, a study was made of the rose hybrid – F1 Panthera; the Rosario F1 hybrid was used as a control; a hybrid with a plum-shaped fruit – F1 Armata, control – a hybrid F1 Lezghinka. Results According to the results of the study of tomato hybrids, the selection of the Gavrish company at the enterprise made the decision to grow it in extended circulation and increase the area under F1 Baloven, in the summer-autumn turnover under the F1 Panthera hybrid.

Flame “cultivation” for weed control was developed about 50 years ago. The practice was very popular with Southern cotton farmers through the 1950s and 1960s, but lost favor when petroleum prices rose drastically in the 1970s. There is now a new interest in the practice of flame cultivation as a partial or total replacement for herbicides in vegetable crops. This interest is fueled by three factors: 1) an increasingly negative public perception of herbicides on vegetables, 2) a very limited selection of herbicides labeled for vegetables, and 3) limited efficacy of some of the herbicides that are registered. Flame cultivation, in combination with mechanical cultivation, can replace or supplement herbicides in some vegetable crops. The mode of action of flame cultivation is the bursting of cell walls in the weeds as the weeds are heated by a carefully directed LP gas flame. With most vegetable crops, the crop plants must be protected in some manner. This can be done with a water shield (flat fan water spray), height differential between weeds and crop, physical shield, etc. Much of the early work on flame cultivation of vegetables was done with sweet corn. Work is now underway on flame cultivation of lima beans and southernpeas, where multiple flame cultivations have proven effective at controlling weeds for which no herbicide is available.

In 2020 a field experiment was conducted with mutant lines of common bean from M4 generations at the Maritsa Vegetable Crops Research Institute, Plovdiv. The aim of the study was to determine the productivity of plants in drought conditions. Twenty four mutant lines were studied in two variants: optimal (non-treated) and reduced (treated) irrigation regimes. A description of the mutant lines was made according to the following features: color: coloring of the flag; beans - length without beak; bean shape in cross section (through the seed); beans-basic coloring; flowering time. Phenological data were collected for phenophases: budding, flowering, fruit size, consumption and botanical maturity. At consumption maturity, biometric measurements were made of 5 plants per repetition on the following indicators: fresh weight (g) of a plant; number and fresh mass (g) of green beans per plant; length (cm) and width (cm) of beans, total fresh biomass (g). The highest productivity found among the treated plants in consumption maturity were the early mutant lines M 564-193-9-1-1 and 564-193-9-1-2, followed by M 564-190-1-1-1, M 564-110-1-2, and M 564-191-1-1-2, compared to the parent line L 564 and all the rest of early mutant lines. The treated plants developed the phenophases 7-10 days later than those with optimal watering.

Lakhipur Community Development block of Goalpara district of Assam has been selected for the study. The reason behind selection of the area is that Kohlrabi, Carrot and Cauliflower play a significant role in the economy of the district. Growing vegetables sector provides opportunities for employment generation, attain income and food security and increase income through value addition. However, due to the absence of efficient marketing facilities and processing units farmers do not receive remunerative prices. As most of the vegetable crops are perishable, their harvest and marketing are very crucial for boosting the development of these crops. It was observed that about 4.03 per cent of Kohlrabi, 3.57 per cent of Carrot and 3.22 per cent of Cauliflower’s scope for increasing producer’s share in consumer’s price. And also seen that absence of proper marketing facilities in the post harvest operations from the farmers to the consumers are found responsible for the wide price spread.
