The Associated Landscape Contractors of America reported in 2004 that the lawn and landscape industry experienced considerable growth during the last 10 years: an increase of 31% from 2002 to 2003, and 126% from 1998 to 2003. An understanding by landscaping professionals of what factors influence consumers' evaluation and selection process when purchasing landscaping services is instrumental in formulating business and marketing plans that will more effectively target new customers, increase the customer base, and ultimately increase profits. To determine these factors, a questionnaire was developed and mailed to 5000 randomly selected households in the metro-Philadelphia area. Recipients were asked to consider factors deemed relevant to the selection and purchase of a landscaping service provider and rank them in order of importance. Questions pertaining to both the landscape industry, such as types of services purchased or how much was spent on these services, and the participants' demographic status were included. A total of 504 completed surveys were received, representing a 10% response rate. Results indicated that the “quality of work” factor was most important, followed by “cost,” and “types of services offered” when analyzed by both the frequency as well as by an average mean ranking of factors. Further analysis of results showed little or no influence on the ordering of factors by independent variables, such as types of service purchased, how much was spent on the service(s), household income, or education levels of the participants.

Learning is basically an attempt to change or improve one's potential, prospective students (raw input) into a new individual (raw output) with a certain quality. Learning has three important elements, namely input, process and output. These three elements are closely interconnected. Indicators of learning success vary from one school to another school. By using qualitative method, this article aims to describe the success of Arabic language learning through selection process of new admissions to get quality student input because the quality of student input is one of the success factors of learning at school. Therefore, it is necessary for schools to held a selection of new admissions to get quality student input, so that the learning success will be easier to achieve.

Model cheese samples from 4 independent productions were heat sterilized (117 °C, 20 minutes) after the melting process and packing with an aim to prolong their durability. The objective of the study was to assess changes in the size and shape of fat globules due to heat sterilization by using image analysis methods. The study included a selection of suitable methods of preparation mounts, taking microphotographs and making overlays for automatic processing of photographs by image analyser, ascertaining parameters to determine the size and shape of fat globules and statistical analysis of results obtained. The results of the experiment suggest that changes in shape of fat globules due to heat sterilization are not unequivocal. We found that the size of fat globules was significantly increased (p < 0.01) due to heat sterilization (117 °C, 20 min), and the shares of small fat globules (up to 500 μm2, or 100 μm2) in the samples of heat sterilized processed cheese were decreased. The results imply that the image analysis method is very useful when assessing the effect of technological process on the quality of processed cheese quality.

For sustained profitability, architects must position themselves to attract new clients. This involves understanding potential clients’ choices and how these might impact on subsequent satisfaction. The study ranked criteria for architect selection and how these predict satisfaction among first-time private sector clients in Lagos, Nigeria. Data from a questionnaire survey were analysed using descriptive statistics, relative importance index and categorical regression, identifying timely delivery, cost of service and quality of previous services as the most important criteria. Although personal relationship has been said to influence selection of a professional service provider, this criterion was found to be of relatively low importance here. To attract private sector clients, architects should prioritise improved service delivery and construction skill development.

Selection of library materials is an important activity which aims to determine the selection of library materials based on characteristics and needs of users. Library selection activities are conducted by professional librarians who have the ability to develop collections. Due to the importance of library materials selection activities, the researcher conducted a study at the Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan 1 Pacitan Library. This study aimed to describe the principles of the librarian in the library material selection process at the library of Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan 1 Pacitan. The study used the descriptive qualitative method, with sampling using the purposive sampling technique to the librarian and non-librarian at the Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan 1 Pacitan Library. The data collection technique in this study used the semi-structured interview instruments. The researcher used the scope of library material selection principles consisting of the traditionalist, liberal and pluralistic view. According to the liberal view; the study results showed that librarians were not able to market the library through the approach to students. To the traditionalist view, the main principle in meeting the needs of students was based on the quality of library materials. While the pluralistic view suggested that most students were not satisfied with the literature available at the Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan 1 Pacitan Library. Based on that, the Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan 1 Pacitan Library has applied the traditionalist principles which can be seen from the quality of library materials that will be accessible to the students.

Central to the problem of obtaining intelligent and effective management and policy direction in the federal government are the sources and procedures used in the selection of federal political executives. These executives, occupying positions usually subject to presidential appointment and senatorial confirmation, constitute the “key group in making representative government work within the executive branch.” Through them the President directs and controls his administration, creates political support, and establishes lines of defense for his political program. Increasing attention has been paid to the selection process in recent years because of frequent reports of extreme difficulty in recruiting able people, inability to retain their services, and allegations that those who have served have proven less than adequate. The problem as broadly stated by the (Jackson) subcommittee on National Policy Machinery of the Senate Committee on Government Operations is: “how to make the quality of appointments of private citizens to national services keep pace with the spiraling complexity and difficulty of foreign policy and defense problems.”

The performance of two groups of Tasmania police employees (all of whom were constables or probationary constables) was evaluated after their first year of training and on-the-job employment. Group membership was a function of initial selection process — one group undertook detailed psychological profiling as part of their pre-employment testing, and the other group did not. The non-screened group was compared to the profiled (screened) group across a range of performance measures. Across seven out of eight measures, the screened group outperformed the non-screened group, with four of the differences statistically significant. The screened group also had a lower dropout rate. The simplest explanation of results suggests that a different quality of applicant is selected by the psychological profiling system, when compared to more traditional processes such as simple selection interviews. Implications for future selection of police personnel in Australia are also discussed.
