Background: With the advent of anesthesia, surgery is no longer a race against the clock and surgeons. Many studies in the past have demonstrated limited knowledge among patients about various aspects of anesthesia. Objectives: To assess the awareness and concern of elective surgical patients towards anesthesia.Methodology: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted over two months’ period in adult patients of age eighteen years and above. Two hundred surgical patients accessing services at the pre-anesthesia check-up clinic were interviewed using 12 questions assessing demographic characteristics, educational status and their knowledge about anesthesia. Results: Out of 200 patients, only 32% knew that anesthesiologists provide anesthesia. It was found that 63% didn’t have any knowledge about the types of anesthesia. The most common fear among the participants about anesthesia was the fear of pain during surgery. Conclusion: The study showed poor knowledge of patients regarding anesthesia.

Aims and methodThis cross-sectional study investigated the evolution of intentions among medical students to pursue a career in psychiatry and the factors that might discourage them from becoming a psychiatrist. A questionnaire survey was sent to medical students in years 1–5 at Aberdeen University.ResultsFrom 918 students, 467 (51%) returned useable responses. Proportions of students across the 5-year groups who definitely or probably intended to become psychiatrists remained fairly stable at 4–7%. In their final year, psychiatry remained a possible career option for a further 17% of students. The most potent discouraging factor was the perception of poor prognoses among psychiatric patients. Perceptions of a lack of scientific/evidence base reduced enthusiasm for becoming a psychiatrist. Issues relating to the prestige of the specialty were also important.ImplicationsIf recruitment to the specialty is to improve, these negative perceptions among students should be addressed by their teachers and more widely within psychiatry.

Abstract Background: Elder population is considered as a vulnerable group with high risk of dental caries. The older adults living in rural areas of Yunnan province account for approximately half of the province’s total population. However, few studies have addressed their dental caries status. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the dental caries status and their associated factors among 65-74 years old people in the rural areas of Yunnan province, China. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited participants through a multistage and stratified strategy, and comprised a clinical oral examination and a questionnaire survey. Two trained and calibrated dentists, wearing LED headlights, conducted the clinical assessment with dental mirrors and CPI probes. Caries experience was measured using the DMFT and DF-Root indices. A face-to-face questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the participants’ socio-demographic information, oral health-related knowledge and practices. A multi-factor ANCOVA test was used to detect the factors influencing coronal and root caries. Results: 1175 elderly residents aged 65-74 were included. The majority of the surveyed elderly respondents (87%) experienced coronal caries (DMFT>0), and 56% of the respondents had root caries. Their overall mean DMFT and DF-root scores were 10.4±10.9 and 2.4±3.8, respectively. In total, 12% of the participants were edentulous. In the final model, female (β = 2.872, p < 0.001) and residents who living in less developed areas (Jianchuan district) (β = 9.601, p < 0.001) had higher mean DMFT scores. DF-Root scores were also higher among female (β = 0.739, p < 0.001), residents who living in less developed areas (Jianchuan district) (β = 2.082, p < 0.001). In addition, elderly who had lower annual family income were more likely to had more root caries (β = 0.642, p < 0.001) . Conclusion: The dental caries status among 65-to 74-year-old in the rural areas of Yunnan province, China, was poor. Their coronal and root caries experience both varied by gender and place of residence. Cost-effective prevention and treatment programs for caries management should be implemented to benefit the elderly population in the rural areas of Yunnan province.

ABSTRACTA cross sectional study of canine cutaneous myiasis was conducted in five randomly selected kebeles of Dire Dawa Administrative council from December 2009 up to April 2010 to determine the prevalence of canine cutaneous myiasis and to assess factors that determine the occurrence of the disease specifically in dog. Active questionnaire survey among 60 households were used for which 384 dogs were sampled. From a total of 384 dogs, 162 (42.19%) were found harboring the disease cutaneous myiasis among this 120 (74.07%) were infested with the 3rd and 2nd instar larvae of Cordylobiaantropophaga. whereas the remaining 42(25.93%) observed dogs were found infested with cutaneous myiasis. The larvae were identified in Dire Dawa regional diagnostic veterinary parasitology laboratory. Analysis of active questionnaire survey showed that there is no statistically significance difference in the prevalence of disease among different breeds and sexes (P >0.05). In this study, an overall prevalence rate of 162 (42.19%) was found with a statistically significant association among different age groups, housing system and living area (kebele) (P<0.05). Higher prevalence was recorded at 02 kebele (Sabian area) 59 (54.65%), 03 Kebele (Depo and number-one), 43(44.33%), 04 Keble (Gende kore and Greek camp) 33(37.50%), Addis Ketema. 27(51.92%) and05 Keeble (Dechatu) 0(0%). There was 121(49.59%) confined dogs and 41(29.29%) were stray dogs which let out without any control, and puppies of age less than 6 month old (71.56 %), and dogs of age range between 6 months and 18months (79.03%) while those of greater than 18 months (16.43%), were least affected.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to clarify the adverse events of COVID-19 vaccines in Japanese young population. The proportion of participants with adverse events at the vaccination site (immediately or within 30 minutes after vaccination) was 0.5%, and anaphylaxis occurred in one female student (0.03%). We analyzed 1,877 data obtained from a questionnaire survey of 1,993 vaccinated individuals. Eighty-two percent of participants complained of local adverse events. Injection site pain was the most common local adverse event (71%). Systemic adverse events occurred in 48% of participants. The most common adverse event was myalgia (34%). A multivariable logistic regression model was used to determine risk factors. Local adverse events were associated with sex (female) and allergy history, with odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence interval [CI]) of 2.15 (1.69-2.73) and 1.73 (1.10-2.74), respectively. Systemic adverse events were associated with sex (female), age (<20 years old), allergy history, and history of adverse events with previous medications, with ORs (95% CI) of 2.49 (2.03-3.06), 1.80 (1.44-2.24), 1.39 (1.03-1.89), and 1.53 (1.02-2.29). The results of this study clarified for the first time that age less than 20 years is a risk factor for systemic adverse events from the COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna Intramuscular Injection. This information will give impacts on considering adverse events and its mechanisms in mRNA vaccination.

Objective: Our aim was to determine the morbidity of patients awaiting tonsillectomy.Design: The study comprised a questionnaire survey of 379 children and 278 adults waiting over 12 months for tonsillectomy.Outcome measures: These comprised frequency of infection, sickness absence and continuing desire for surgery. Results: Response rates were 70 per cent (children) and 60 per cent (adults). Morbidity was similar in adults and children, and in those waiting more or less than two years. In the six months prior to the study, 86 per cent of children and 83 per cent of adults had had tonsillitis. Sixty per cent of children and 50 per cent of adults had had three or more episodes. Sixty-two per cent of children and 59 per cent of adults had had at least one long episode of tonsillitis, and 29 per cent of children and 24 per cent of adults had had more than three long episodes. Eighty-nine per cent of children had missed school at least once, compared with 71 per cent of adults missing work at least once (p = 0.01). The frequency of infection was significantly associated with patients' desire for surgery (p < 0.001).Conclusions: Patients awaiting tonsillectomy experience considerable morbidity. This study does not support the hypothesis that untreated patients will ‘outgrow’ their condition.
