This paper presents an approach to implement learning objects for teaching and learning problem-solving techniques based on computer programming. The demonstrated approach exploits computer-based interactive animations and computer graphics. The main feature of this approach is its simplicity for exploring the concepts and structures of the programming that are used to implement a solution for a problem under consideration. The developed learning objects feature the possibility of reusability and adaptability in e-learning settings. Moreover, the learning objects can be utilized as a hands-on experience for the learners of a certain subject matter. The approach applied for the design and implementation of the learning objects for computer programming-based problem solving can be extended to other disciplines of science and technology. As a demonstration of the proposed methodology, we showed an application that utilizes the approach to implement a learning object for solving a well-known statistics and probability problem.

This article is based on my plenary talk at the joint conference of ProMath and the GDM working group on problem-solving in 2018. The aim of this article is to consider teaching and learning problem-solving from different perspectives taking into account the connection between 1) teacher’s actions and pupils’ solutions and 2) teacher’s actions and pupils’ affective reactions. Safe and supportive emotional atmosphere is base for students’ learning and attitudes towards mathematics. Teacher has a central role both in constructing emotional atmosphere and in offering cognitive support that pupils need in order to reach higher-level solutions. Teachers need to use activating guidance, i.e., ask good questions based on pupils’ solutions. Balancing between too much and too little guidance is not easy.

Learning to code is considered as a difficult and challenging task for a significant number of novice programmers in programming education. Novice programmers have to acquire different skills such as problem solving, program design, comprehension, and debugging at the same time. On the other hand, most introductory programming courses focus more on syntax of the programming language. In this study, we developed and introduced a ‘PROBSOL’ application in three different learning systems (E-learning, M-learning and Game-based learning) to enhance the problem solving skills of novice programmers in an introductory programming (IP) course. A survey was conducted with the IP students to determine their perception about all the three applications in the IP course. Gender differences were determined by comparing both female and male students’ responses for each question in the survey. The results of comparison show that male students were more satisfied with all the three applications compared to female students. Both female and male students perceived that all the three applications are user-friendly, enabled them to accomplish tasks more quickly, and enhanced their learning productivity. Overall, both male and female students appreciated all the three applications in the teaching and learning process of the IP course. This study implies that instructors can also use all the three applications as an additional teaching tool in the teaching and learning process of programming education.

Abstract: The goal of this study is to highlight current breakthroughs in digital technology research in the subject of mathematics education. The Covid-19 outbreak in 2020 turned both private and public life on its head. Higher education institutions all across the world were forced to switch their teaching and learning online on very short notice. As a result, many types of software like Google Meet, MS teams, Zoom and WebEx, etc. have been developed to help teachers and students communicate more effectively. Problem-solving is a characteristic of mathematical activity and an essential component of the development of mathematical and analytical skills. The capacity to answer a broad variety of complicated mathematical problems is a major goal of mathematics education and learning. However, the process of problem-solving in online mode has not received the attention it deserves, because many professors are uncomfortable with it. As a result, problemsolving as a method and skill is not taught as an intrinsic component of the mathematics learning process by instructors. Qualitative methodology is a technique used for this study. The purpose of this study is to reveal the roles and significance of mathematics teaching and learning via the use of technology applications (E-learning). This study aims to determine whether the application of e-learning in problem-based learning can improve the problem solving abilities of FMIPA Unimed students. The approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative research by actively involving through e-learning the actors in the learning process, namely lecturers and students, as well as other related subjects. Developing a computer based system for examinations are the substitute for the current examination system based on paper. In recent days, the e-learning has become more popular because of its adaptability, integrity and user friendliness. In terms of the paper based examinations, major challenge is the proctoring techniques used. In this paper, a novel method to avoid the presence of a proctor throughout the examination is proposed by an intelligent based examination system. This method is proposed to improve the e-learning using intelligent question bank and examination system. The system is designed with different complexity levels among the questions and also it acts as a tool to assessing the understanding of student from the teaching materials. This system can be timesaving and more efficient with an adequate level of security. The proposed methodology can be classified in to two main phases such as the design of question bank along with its database, design of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) based system for examination and its evaluation in order to improve the e-learning. Future works in this system can be the addition of theory-based questions and the integration of biometric based systems for enhancing the level of security.

Interactive Digital Television (iDTV) has facilitated and expanded the communication and interaction in activities of knowledge acquisitions, entertainment, and recreation in the distance learning field. This new way of teaching and learning has been called t-Learning. In this context, the Learning Objects (LOs) have an important role in assisting in the electronic courses' development. Due the fast progress of e-Learning, some efforts toward standardization have appeared in order to enable the reusability of educational contents and interoperability among systems, and one of these standards is the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM). Therefore, the main goal of this work is to present an extension of SCORM aiming to adapt it to improve the search and navigation of LOs with educational content for t-Learning. This is done through an authoring tool named T-SCORM ADAPTER, which is able to apply this extension in a fast and efficient way.

This paper describes a case study of enquiry-based learning to teach problem solving, innovation, group working, and presentation skills for electrical engineering students in electric machinery course at Beijing Jiaotong University. The research project is designed by teachers and students go through three processes: project-based teaching and learning, problem-based derivation and simulation, and enquiry-based presentation. The multidiscipline project is innovated to meet the requirements of engineering education while keeping its traditional effectiveness in driving students to apply knowledge to practice and problem solving. The feedback from students shows positive support for the innovations.

Teaching in Higher Education is with increasing frequency completed within a Learning Management System (LMS) environment in the Blended Learning modality. The use of learning objects (activities and resources) offered by LMS means that both teachers and students require training. In addition, gender differences relating to the number of students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and Non-STEM courses might have some influence on the use of those learning objects. The study involves 13 teachers (6 experts in e-Learning and 7 non-experts) on 13 academic courses (4 STEM and 9 Non-STEM) and a detailed examination of the logs of 626 students downloaded from the Moodle platform. Our objectives are: (1) To confirm whether significant differences may be found in relation to the use of learning objects (resources and activities) on Moodle, depending on the expertise of the teacher (expert vs. non-expert in e-Learning); (2) To confirm whether there are significant differences between students regarding their use of learning objects, depending on the expertise of the teacher (expert vs. non-expert in e-Learning); (3) To confirm whether there are significant differences for the use of learning objects among students as a function of gender. Differences were found in the use of Moodle learning objects (resources and activities) for teachers and for students depending on the expertise of the teacher. Likewise, differences were found for the use of some learning objects as a function of gender and the degrees that the students were following. Increased technological training for both teachers and students is proposed, especially on Non-STEM qualifications, in order to mitigate the effects of the technological gap and its collateral relation with the gender gap and the digital divide.

Computational thinking skill is one of the essential abilities to be learned and perfected by students of this century. Studies have shown that in the teaching and learning of programming courses, discussion and problem-solving techniques have been widely used. However, studies based on the suitability of such teaching techniques for the development of the computational thinking skills of students are, however, lacking. In this context, this research was conducted to define the teaching techniques used by university lecturers when teaching a computer programming subject and to explore how the techniques can influence the development of the computational thinking skills of students. This research was based on a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches involving a semi-structured interview and a survey method, respectively. The research sample consisted of eight (8) university lecturers recruited from several Malaysian public universities, who had been teaching computer science to undergraduates. The results showed that in teaching computer programming, a majority of the respondents used discussion and problem-solving methods, with each assisting students to gain computer programming skills and learn certain components of computational thinking. As such, it is recommended that teaching practitioners incorporate the discussion and problem-solving techniques in the teaching and learning of programming courses. The incorporation of such strategies will help students develop good computer programming and computational thinking skills encompassing all the fundamental elements. The results also revealed that the respondents had no experience in using the metacognitive technique. As such, it is also proposed that future research should focus on this technique to investigate any possible effects that it may have on the growth of the computer programming and computational thinking skills of undergraduates.

E-learning is the best way of getting knowledge at present especially when it comes to distant education. E-learning is a computer-based educational system that allows you to learn in any place at any time. Earlier e-learning solutions were delivered on CDROMs but nowadays, an online platform is making easier ways for such implementation in terms of scalability as well as usability. Online courses such a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), which is a way of delivering the content of learning online for any person with easy access from any part of the World is becoming much more popular for certification courses. This research paper focuses on the requirements of such implementation as a part of teaching and learning strategy in one of the higher education institutions in Oman. The existing system in these days is Moodle which is one of the Virtual Learning Environments. Through Moodle, teachers are sharing many eLearning based tools with students. It is based on PowerPoint in Moodle learning and different activities on papers. The methodology used in this project is a mixed methodology – quantitative and qualitative, which includes a questionnaire to get more opinions from different people about this research and there also interviews. The study is performed in context to one of the leading private higher education institutions (HEI) in Oman. The proposed research will suggest a new E-Learning application, especially for some practical modules. Based on the above study, researchers have a plan to propose a new framework and solution for practical modules in HEI especially with the integration of MOOC. The large scale implementation of the proposed research and its solution will be on a cloud, in order to provide easy access along with scalability.
