The scalp is the most frequent site of occurrence of malignant tumors. As an area that is generally neglected by the patient and not closely monitored during physical examinations. Plastic surgery has a double interest in the management of malignant tumors of the scalp: it allows oncologic tumor excision and coverage of defects induced. The present study reports 65 cases of giant malignant tumors of the scalp and who underwent surgical management, from January 2011 to June 2019. It included oncologic resection and repair of the defect. The average age in our series was 69.3 years, with a sex ratio of 5.1. Disease duration before consultation was on average 21 months. The location of the tumor was mostly parietal in 75%. The histological types were found in our series: 36 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, 16 cases of basal cell carcinoma, 6 cases of melanoma, 3 cases of trichilemmal carcinoma, 2 cases of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and one case of sarcoma and one case of adenoid cystic carcinoma . To cover the defect we used: skin graft in 44 cases and by local flaps in 21 cases. 42 patients benefited from radiotherapy and the evolution was marked by a reactivation in 3 cases of squamous cell carcinoma. The management of malignant tumors of the scalp is surgical and consists of two components: surgical excision and coverage. This repair is achieved through multiple techniques, facilitated by the vascular richness of this anatomical region.

A 10-year retrospective study was performed in order to determine the incidence, distribution, histological type and behaviour of skin tumours of the hand that were referred to a regional Plastic Surgery unit. 85 patients were studied and 98 malignant or pre-malignant lesions identified. The majority were squamous cell carcinomas in male manual workers. Recurrence after excision was seen only in lesions greater than 1.5 cm in diameter. The overall incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the hand (requiring surgical excision) was seen to be five cases per million per year. Other skin tumours were rare.

AbstractEsophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors in the digestive system with a high incidence and poor prognosis. Long non-coding RNAs (LncRNA) have been reported to be closely associated with the occurrence and development of various human cancers. Data from GSE89102 shows an increase of THAP9-AS1 expression in ESCC. However, its functions and mechanisms underlying ESCC progression remain to be investigated. In this study, we found that THAP9-AS1 was overexpressed in ESCC tissues and cells. High THAP9-AS1 expression was positively correlated with tumor size, TNM stage, lymph node metastasis, and worse prognosis. Functionally, depletion of THAP9-AS1 suppressed cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, while enhanced apoptosis in vitro. Consistently, knockdown of THAP9-AS1 inhibited xenograft tumor growth in vivo. Mechanistically, THAP9-AS1 could serve as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) for miR-133b, resulting in the upregulation of SOX4. Reciprocally, SOX4 bound to the promoter region of THAP9-AS1 to activate its transcription. Moreover, the anti-tumor property induced by THAP9-AS1 knockdown was significantly impaired due to miR-133b downregulation or SOX4 overexpression. Taken together, our study reveals a positive feedback loop of THAP9-AS1/miR-133b/SOX4 to facilitate ESCC progression, providing a potential molecular target to fight against ESCC.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the external ear can be a potentially lethal lesion. Although it is the most common cancer involving the pinna, the variables that have the greatest impact on prognosis are still in question. We reviewed 75 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the external ear to determine patterns of occurrence and treatment failure. Forty patients had adequate follow-up for determination of cancer control rates. Local control was successful with initial treatment in 85% of the cases. The incidence of lymph node metastases was 10%, whereas distant metastasis occurred in only one patient (2.5%). This series differs from others in that most patients were unselected and most of the lesions treated were early (less than 1 cm). The significance of positive margins after surgical excision is also analyzed.

Background: Bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma also called cancer eye, represents the most economically important neoplasm in large animals. Hereditary factors, environmental factors (e.g: latitude, altitude, exposure to sunlight), lack of eyelid pigmentation, age and dietary habits have all been reported to play a role in the etiopathogenesis of bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma. In addition, in cattle the etiology has been linked to a number of viral agents, especially bovine papilloma virus and bovine herpes virus type 1 and 5. Nevertheless, ultraviolet light, viruses and circumocular pigmentation are the major epidemiologic risk factors for the development of the tumor. The efficacy of different treatment modalities for eye cancer in bovines was studied.Methods: All the animals were divided in to four groups of six animals each. Surgical excision, intra lesion BCG vaccine, surgery with auto vaccine and surgery with mitomycin was the treatment protocols followed. Immunohistochemical studies were conducted to know the rate of proliferation of bovine ye cancer. Immunopositive reaction was observed against Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor in all the cases.Result: The benefits of different treatment modalities depended on nature, type, location and extensiveness of tumor. Early detection and aggressive treatment were essential in the successful management of these tumors. A multimodal treatment approach was recommended with surgery, immunotherapy and chemotherapy in providing 100% disease free interval.

AbstractSquamous cell carcinomas of the anal canal and the anal margin are rare malignancies that are increasing in incidence. Patients with these tumors often experience delayed treatment due to delay in diagnosis or misdiagnosis of the condition. Distinguishing between anal canal and anal margin tumors has implications for staging and treatment. Chemoradiation therapy is the mainstay of treatment for anal canal squamous cell, with abdominoperineal resection reserved for salvage treatment in cases of persistent or recurrent disease. Early anal margin squamous cell carcinoma can be treated with wide local excision, but more advanced tumors require a combination of chemoradiation therapy and surgical excision.

A 41-year-old male presented with a large non-pigmented lesion on the ocular surface involving 8 clock hours of limbus, bulbar conjunctiva, and palpebral conjunctiva. Incisional biopsy confirmed poorly differentiated conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). It was staged as a T3, N0, M0 lesion. Treatment was with surgical excision, amniotic membrane transplant, and buccal mucosa graft. Three weekly cycles of 0.04% mitomycin C were administered postoperatively. Six months following excision, although there was no evidence of residual conjunctival SCC, the patient suffered from poor vision, significant pain, and diplopia due to severe dry eye, limbal stem cell deficiency, and symblepharon.This case illustrates the difficult clinical decisions which confront the clinician when treating conjunctival SCC, particularly with balancing the need to eradicate the disease to prevent local invasion and metastatic spread on the one hand and minimising ocular morbidity on the other.

A 60-year-old male patient presented with complaints of persistent red to a brown-colored plaque on his scrotum, with duration of approximately three years. The patient had been treated with oral and topical antifungals for inguinal tinea for several months and after that with topical corticosteroids for eczema for several more months. None of the regimens achieved any therapeutic effect. The histopathological evaluation revealed the presence of atypical keratinocytes in all layers of the epidermis with the altered epidermal pattern, spread parabasal mitotic activity, without secondary satellites, multiple dyskeratotic cells and multinucleated cells. The diagnosis of an intraepithelial non-invasive squamous cell carcinoma, associated with koilocytic dysplasia and hyperplasia was made, meeting the criteria for Bowen disease. An elliptic surgical excision of the lesion was made, while the defect was closed with single stitches, with excellent therapeutic and aesthetic result. First described by John T. Bowen in 1912, Bowen disease (BD) represents a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in situ with the potential for significant lateral spread. Treatment options include the application of topical 5-flurorouracil cream – useful in non-hairy areas, imiquimod cream or destructive methods such as radiation, curettage, cryotherapy, laser ablation and photodynamic therapy, especially useful in nail bed involvement. Despite the early lesions, surgical excision is the preferred treatment option, regarding the potential malignant transformation risk.

Background: Equines are routinely subjected to enucleation due to palpebral tumors. Blepharoplasties in horses, especially in the lower eyelid, are rarely performed due to the difficulty of sliding once the tissue around the eyes presents low mobility. Defects involving more than 50% of the lower eyelid is considered challenging after tumor removal. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most reported neoplasm in horses, being very common in regions of the lower eyelid, third eyelid, sclera and or cornea. The aim of this study is to present the Destro VY skin advancement flap as a blepharoplasty technique performed after surgical excision of a SCC, with total commitment of the lower eyelid, completely covering the right eye of a mare.Case: A 8-year-oldmarePaint Horse, weighing420 kg,was referred for evaluation of tumor tissue of 6.0 x 4.0 x 2.0 cm, with nodular and ulcerated appearance, involving the right lower eyelid, in its total extension and completely covering the eye, without adhering to it. Considering the initial suspicion of SCC, the treatment strategy performed was surgical eyelid excision and maintenance of the eye, followed by blepharoplasty as an attempt to reconstruct the eyelid. Under general inhalation anesthesia, the animal was placed in left lateral recumbency, when the surgical region was prepared and local anesthetic block was performed. After antisepsis, a skin incision was made circumscribing the tumor, respecting a margin of 10 mm apart and excision of all visible tumor tissue was performed followed by intralesional ozone therapy. Blepharoplasty was performed to cover the portions of the exposed lacrimal and zygomatic bones, as well as correction of the eyelid aesthetics. For this, Destro VY skin advancement flap was performed for reconstruction of the lower eyelid. An incision of approximately 7 cm in V-shaped skin was performed, and the subcutaneous tissue under the V was dissected, maintaining a central pedicle, responsible for the vascularization of the flap, which was slid, approximately 20 mm, towards the eye. After obtaining the desired skin approximation, Y-suture was performed, covering the exposed bone and reconstructing the lower eyelid. In the postoperative period, local instillation of mitomycin eye drops and systemic meloxicam administration were instituted. The mare had her vision restored, presenting satisfactory morpho functional and aesthetic results and no tumor recurrence during 1-year of follow-up. Discussion: The repair of lower eyelid imperfections is challenging, especially when they have large defects, and there are no reports of performing the Destro VY skin advancement flap technique in horses for lower eyelid reconstruction. In this case, the importance of the blepharoplasty technique is emphasized, avoiding enucleation, preserving horse’s vision and aesthetics. In addition, aiming to avoid tumor recurrence, especially if surgical safety margins can not be achieved, other complementary treatments should be associated, including intralesional ozone therapy, mitomycin, an antineoplastic chemotherapy drug, and meloxicam, a COX-2 selective, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, as performed in this study. It is concluded that the use of the Destro VY skin advancement flap technique for reconstruction of the external lamella in cases of SCC in the lower eyelid of horses is a feasible technique, which preserves the animal's vision, as well as aesthetics. The safety margin in the surgical excision of the SCC and the association of complementary therapies in the resolution of the condition are important points also to be considered.Keywords: epidermoid carcinoma, equine, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, skin tumor. INTRODUCTION: Esophageal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world affecting males more often than females and with a poor prognosis. The aim of our work was to describe the epidemiology of patients followed for esophageal cancer at the Joliot-Curie Institute in 2018. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a descriptive retrospective study including all patients followed at the institute from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018 for esophageal cancer with histological evidence. RESULTS: We collected 93 patients referred to the institute for the management of esophageal cancer, 46 women (49.5%) and 47 men (50.5%). The mean age was 49 years with a median age of 50 and extremes of 22 and 84 years. The notion of smoking was found in 24 patients (25.8%) exclusively men (51%), associated in six cases with a notion of alcoholism. The median consultation time was five months. The main circumstance of discovery remains dysphagia (87.1%), followed by aphagia (4.3%) and odynophagia (4.3%). Squamous cell carcinoma is the most represented histological type with 89 patients (95.7%) distributed as follows: 45 women and 44 men. Adenocarcinoma was found in three cases (two men and one woman) and finally one case of adenosquamous carcinoma. CONCLUSION: Squamous cell carcinoma is the most frequent esophagus cancer. It represents the fifth location in our institute and occurs in young patients without gender predominance.

Purpose. Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the most common malignant tumors in the world. Genetic variants have an important role in HNSCC progression. Our study is aimed at exploring the relationship between MIR17HG polymorphisms and HNSCC risk in the Chinese Han population. Methods. We recruited 537 HNSCC cases and 533 healthy subjects to detect the correlation of six polymorphisms in MIR17HG with HNSCC susceptibility. The associations were evaluated by computing odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using logistic regression analysis. Results. Our study revealed that rs7336610 (OR 1.77, 95 % CI = 1.09 ‐ 2.86 , and p = 0.021 ) and rs1428 (OR 1.73, 95 % CI = 1.07 ‐ 2.81 , and p = 0.025 ) are strongly associated with increased susceptibility to HNSCC in men. Besides, rs17735387 played a crucial protective role in stage III/IV HNSCC patients (OR 0.34, 95 % CI = 0.12 ‐ 0.95 , and p = 0.040 ) compared with stage I/II. Conclusion. Our study firstly indicated that MIR17HG polymorphisms are significantly associated with HNSCC susceptibility, which suggests that MIR17HG has a potential role in the occurrence of HNSCC.
