While national surveillance studies have stratified high school students’ health behavior outcomes, few ecological data sets have been explored, collected, and analyzed on the unique health problems of minority children. An area for which limited data on minority youth has been collected is Franklin County, home of the state capital of Kentucky. In the current study, we use baseline data collected in 2015 from students attending two high schools that were sites for Kentucky State University’s Youth Empowerment Project. We hypothesize that youth who reside in Franklin County would report lower maladjusted behaviors than their national and statewide counterparts in the same year of observation. Data analyses confirm that compared to their national- and state-level counterparts, Franklin County high school students were less likely to report riding with a driver who had been drinking alcohol, engaging in sexual intercourse, drinking alcohol before sexual intercourse, and experiencing non-condom use when engaged in sexual intercourse, forced sexual intercourse, dating violence, cyber bullying, suicidal ideation, and drug use. These findings suggest that Franklin County high school students may be exposed to environmental variables that may be preventive to maladjusted behaviors.

Denise-Ghloe Alevizou, The school-years of Konstantinos Volanakis in Syros and his art teacher Andreas Kriezis

Research in the state archives at Hermoupolis, Syros and specifically in the Hermoupolis school registers of the mid 19th century, allows us today to establish that Konstantinos Volanakis attended classes there from 1851/1852 through to 1854/1855. The presumption that he actually completed his education there remains however unfounded. Yet, whilst his graduation from the Hermoupolis Gymnasion (High school) remains doubtful, our search in the teachers' records of the same period establishes that the then already renowned artist Andreas Kriezis may now be safely connected to the young schoolboy, as his art teacher there. This hitherto unsuspected connection between the two important 19th century artists, strengthened or not by an oil painting of the «Parthenon» on the walls of the Gymnasion (attributed by hearsay to Volanakis, but probably a work by Kriezis), sheds new light on the early period of the great sea-scapist allowing us at the same time to assume a possible constructive role by Kriezis.

As states like New Jersey navigate the issue of graduation requirements, most states have gone to what is called “high stakes” exit testing for the purpose of awarding high school diplomas. These tests typically emerge to be Mathematics and Language Arts/Reading based. In states like New Jersey, though, these exit tests have given way to subject based tests in things such as Biology and Algebra. Social Studies is not tested, but should be, if the state claims to care about producing well-rounded students prepared to fulfill their civic duties as voting adults. William Gorman, an educator with 30 years’ experience, lobbies for such testing in this editorial.
