La dispersión de nanopartículas antibacterianas en matrices poliméricas biocompatibles, no tóxicas y biodegradables permitirá el desarrollo de materiales más eficientes y efectivos para la conservación de alimentos, la eliminación de contaminantes y la protección contra microorganismos que comprometen la salud humana. Los materiales bactericidas nanométricos tienen una relación superficie / volumen muy grande que les permite interactuar con más copias de moléculas biológicas, y por lo tanto, mejorar la eficacia antimicrobiana. Más recientemente, se ha sugerido la actividad antimicrobiana del MgO amigable con el medio ambiente y químicamente estable. La incorporación de compuestos bactericidas en una matriz polimérica puede combinar la estabilidad física proporcionada por la matriz polimérica con las propiedades antimicrobianas de los agentes antimicrobianos dispersados como partıculas pequeñas sólidas. Sobre esta base, la presente investigación se centrará en el desarrollo de mezclas de partículas inorgánicas poliméricas biocompatibles, los denominados nanocompuestos, con actividad antimicrobiana sintonizable y mejorada. Se confirmó la actividad antimicrobiana de perlas de alginato cálcico - MgO (que oscilaban entre 0% y 40% p / p MgO) contra E. coli. Las perlas que contenían 20% p / p de MgO inhibían completamente el crecimiento bacterial de la E. coli. ABSTRACTThe dispersion of antibacterial nanoparticles into bio-compatible, non-toxic and bio-degradable polymeric matrices will enable the development of more efficient and effective materials for food preservation, removal of contaminants, and protection against human health-compromising microorganisms. Nanometric bactericidal materials have a very large surface to volume ratio that enable them to attach more copies of biological molecules, and hence, enhance antimicrobial efficiency. More recently, the antimicrobial activity of environmental-friendly and chemically stable MgO has been suggested. The incorporation of bactericidal compounds into a polymeric matrix can combine physical stability provided by the polymeric matrix with the antimicrobial properties of antimicrobial agents dispersed as solid tiny particles. On this basis, the present research will be focused on the development of biocompatible polymer-inorganic particle mixtures, so-called nanocomposites, with tunable and enhanced antimicrobial activity. The antimicrobial activity of calcium alginate – MgO beads (ranging from 0% - 40% w/w MgO) against E. coli was confirmed. ABSTRACT One of the most effective methods for increasing the antimicrobial activity of a substance is to combine it with one or more other antimicrobial agents. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of buforin I and nisin alone and investigate the synergistic action of these compounds against the most important food spoilage microorganisms, including Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Listeria innocua, Escherichia coli, Salmonella serovar Enteritidis, Aspergillus oryzae, Rhodotorula glutinis, and Geotrichum candidum. The results of MIC and MBC or minimum fungicidal concentration examinations showed that buforin I had higher antimicrobial activity than nisin on all microbial strains used in this study (P ≤ 0.5). E. coli was the most resistant to both antimicrobial agents, whereas L. innocua and S. epidermidis were the most sensitive to nisin and buforin I, respectively. The results of synergistic interaction between buforin I and nisin indicated that the combination of buforin I and nisin on B. subtilis, S. epidermidis, and A. oryzae showed a synergistic effect, whereas it had no effect on Salmonella serovar Enteritidis and G. candidum. The combination of buforin I and nisin showed a partial synergistic effect on L. innocua, E. coli, and R. glutinis. Assessment of viability of the microorganisms under the antimicrobial agents alone and in combination with each other at MICs and fraction inhibitory concentrations indicated that use of these antimicrobial agents in combination enhances antimicrobial activity at lower concentrations of both agents. The present study investigated the antimicrobial properties of buforin I against food spoilage microorganisms for the first time and suggests that its use alone or with nisin may provide a clear horizon for the application of antimicrobial peptides as natural preservatives. Thus, the combination of antimicrobial peptides and traditional antimicrobial food preservatives could be a promising option for the prevention of contamination, spoilage, and infestation of food and beverage products. Bacteriocins are of great interest as potential antimicrobial agents against various types of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Isolates of microorganisms derived from natural sources were used in the current study, including lactic acid bacteria and other antagonistic microorganisms. The species of the microorganisms were determined using 16S rDNA and ITS nrDNA analyses. E. coli, S. enterica, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, B. mycoides, A. faecalis, P. vulgaris, S. flexneri , L. monocytogenes, C. albicans, A. flavus, and P. citrinum were used as pathogenic and opportunistic strains. It was found that 11 strains of antagonistic microorganisms have significant antimicrobial activity against all pathogenic and opportunistic microorganisms. The antimicrobial properties of these microorganisms are currently under study.

In order to develop new antimicrobial agents, a series of 3-formyl indole based Schiff bases were synthesized by reacting 3-formyl indole(indole-3-carboxaldehyde) with substituted aniline taking ethanol as solvent. The reaction was carried in the presence of small amount of p-toluene sulphonic acid as catalyst.All the synthesized compounds were characterized by IR, 1H-NMR spectral analysis. All the synthesized compounds were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against two gram positive bacterial strains (B. subtilisand S. aureus) and two gram negative bacterial strains (P. aeruginosaand E. coli) and one fungal strain (C. albicans). All the synthesized compounds were found to have moderate to good antimicrobial activity. The  standard drug amoxicillin, fluconazole were used for antimicrobial activity. Among the synthesized compounds, the maximum antimicrobial activity was shown by compounds GS04, GS07, GS08 and GS10.

The effect of ionized aqueous solutions (anolytes and catholyte) in the processing of fruits (cherries, morellos, and strawberries) for decontamination has been tested. Freshly prepared analytes and catholyte without the addition of salts were used, as well as stored for 7 months anolytes, prepared with 0.5% NaCl and a combination of 0.5% NaCl and 0.5% Na2CO3. The anolyte prepared with a combination of 0.5% NaCl and 0.5% Na2CO3, as well as the anolyte obtained with 0.5% NaCl, exhibit high antimicrobial activity against the surface microflora of strawberries, cherries, and sour cherries. They inactivate E. coli for 15 minutes. The other species of the fam. Enterobacteriaceae were also affected to the maximum extent, as is the total number of microorganisms, especially in cherries and sour cherries. Even stored for 7 months, they largely retain their antimicrobial properties. Anolyte and catholyte, obtained without the addition of salts, showed a lower effect on the total number of microorganisms, but had a significant effect on Gram-negative bacteria, and especially with regard to the sanitary indicative E. coli.

Modifying the composition of dental restorative materials with antimicrobial agents might induce their antibacterial potential against cariogenic bacteria, e.g., S.mutans and L.acidophilus, as well as antifungal effect on C.albicans that are major oral pathogens. Essential oils (EOs) are widely known for antimicrobial activity and are successfully used in dental industry. The study aimed at evaluating antibacterial and antifungal activity of EOs and composite resin material (CR) modified with EO against oral pathogens. Ten EOs (i.e., anise, cinnamon, citronella, clove, geranium, lavender, limette, mint, rosemary thyme) were tested using agar diffusion method. Cinnamon and thyme EOs showed significantly highest antibacterial activity against S.mutans and L.acidophilus among all tested EOs. Anise and limette EOs showed no antibacterial activity against S.mutans. All tested EOs exhibited antifungal activity against C.albicans, whereas cinnamon EO showed significantly highest and limette EO significantly lowest activity. Next, 1, 2 or 5 µL of cinnamon EO was introduced into 2 g of CR and microbiologically tested. The modified CR showed higher antimicrobial activity in comparison to unmodified one. CR containing 2 µL of EO showed the best antimicrobial properties against S.mutans and C.albicans, while CR modified with 1 µL of EO showed the best antimicrobial properties against L.acidophilus.

Alginate from algal biomass is used as edible film and the incorporation of antimicrobial agents improves its performance to increase the shelf-life of fresh foods. However, environmental conditions and intrinsic properties of films influence their release. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the concentration and type of encapsulating agent and pH of emulsions on the physical and antimicrobial properties of alginate-carvacrol films. Films containing alginate, carvacrol as antimicrobial agent, and Tween 20 or trehalose (0.25 and 0.75% w/w) as encapsulating agents were obtained from suspensions at pH 4 and pH 8. Physical characterization of emulsions and films and antimicrobial properties (E. coliandB. cinerea) was evaluated. Results showed that droplets size depended on trehalose concentration, but emulsion stability depended on pH and type of encapsulating agent, being more stable samples with trehalose at pH 4. Although films with Tween 20 presented the highest opacity, they showed the best antimicrobial properties at initial time; however, during storage time, they lost their activity before samples with trehalose and relative humidity (RH) was the principal factor to influence their release. Therefore, sample formulated with 0.25% trehalose at pH 4 and stored at 75% RH had the best potential as edible film for fresh fruits.

The design of new polymeric systems for antimicrobial drug release focused on medical/surgical procedures is of great interest in the biomedical area due to the high prevalence of bacterial infections in patients with wounds or burns. For this reason, in this work, we present a new design of pH-sensitive hydrogels copolymerized by a graft polymerization method (gamma rays), intended for localized prophylactic release of ciprofloxacin and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for potential topical bacterial infections. The synthesized hydrogels were copolymerized from acrylic acid (AAc) and agar. Cross-linked hydrogel film formation depended on monomer concentrations and the degree of radiation used (Cobalt-60). The obtained hydrogel films were characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and mechanical testing. The swelling of the hydrogels was evidenced by the influence of their pH-sensitiveness. The hydrogel was loaded with antimicrobial agents (AgNPs or ciprofloxacin), and their related activity was evaluated. Finally, the antimicrobial activity of biocidal-loaded hydrogel was tested against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on in vitro conditions.

Honeys are described possessing different properties including antimicrobial. Many studies have presented this activity of honeys produced by Apis mellifera bees, however studies including activities of stingless bees honeys are scarce. The aim of this study was to compare the antimicrobial activity of honeys collected in the Amazonas State from Melipona compressipes, Melipona seminigra and Apis mellifera against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Chromobacterium violaceum, and Candida albicans. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined using the agar dilution method with Müller-Hinton agar (for bacteria) or Saboraud agar (for yeast). Staphylococcus aureus and E. faecalis were inhibited by all honeys at concentrations below 12%, while E. coli and C. violaceum were inhibited by stingless bee honeys at concentrations between 10 and 20%. A. mellifera honey inhibited E. coli at a concentration of 7% and Candida violaceum at 0.7%. C. albicans were inhibited only with honey concentrations between 30 and 40%. All examined honey had antimicrobial activity against the tested pathogens, thus serving as potential antimicrobial agents for several therapeutic approaches.

It is well known that essential oils possess significant antimicrobial activity. This study was conducted to estimate the antimicrobial activity of various types of Biokill, a laboratory produced solution composed of several essential oils (Biokill dissolved in 96% ethanol; Biokill 96% further dissolved in DMSO; Biokill dissolved in 70% ethanol and Biokill 70% further dissolved in DMSO). The antimicrobial activity was evaluated against five selected fungal strains, Candida albicans ATCC 10231, Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 9763, Aspergillus niger I.N. 1110, Aspergillus sojae CCF and Penicillium spp. FNS FCC 266. A variation of the microtiter plate-based antimicrobial assay was used in order to assess the antimicrobial activity of the solutions. By applying this assay minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the Biokill solutions were determined for each strain of the selected test microorganisms. The results demonstrated that all variations of Biokill showed antimicrobial activity at concentrations lower than 2.5?g/mL. Biokill 70% further dissolved in DMSO showed the best antimicrobial properties against all the selected strains with MICs less than 1.25?g/mL. These results indicated that Biokill could find application in the pharmaceutical industry, in food preservation and conservation, in the prevention and treat?ment of plants infected by certain phytopathogens, etc.

Introduction. The problem of purulent-inflammatory processes treatment and the prevention of sepsis remains one of the most pressing problems of surgery.Purpose of the study. Is to estimate the effectiveness of sorption composition with antimicrobial properties on the basis of nanodisperse silica on the adhesive properties of microorganisms and to substantiate the expediency of its use for the purulent and inflammatory processes treatment and prevention of sepsis.Materials and methods.To determine the antimicrobial activity and the influence of the antiseptics of decasan, myramistin, ethonium, chlorhexidine and the sorption on the microorganisms adhesion properties composition was used the method of diffusion in agar of the museum strains of microorganisms S. Aureus ATCC 25923, E. Coli ATCC 25922, R. Vulgaris 4636, R. Aureginosa ATCC 27853, S. AIbicans 855/653, SI. Perfringens 28, Peptostreptococcus anaerobicus 22, Bacteroides fragilis 13/83, and clinical strains of S. Aureus, R. Aeuroginosa, E. Coli. Adhesive properties of microorganisms were studied according to the Brillis method et al. (1986) with the subsequent statistical processing of the data.Results. Studies have shown that antiseptics have high antimicrobial activity and reduce the adhesion ability of microorganisms. But the use of only antiseptics or only antibiotics for the purification of purulent foci can lead to toxins absorption and tissue decay products from purulent foci. That processes could be the trigger mechanism for sepsis development. The sorption composition is able to reduce the adhesive activity of bacteria, allows to absorb toxic substances from pathological foci, what preventing their resorption and thereby prevent the development of sepsis.Conclusions. The composition made from sorbents and antiseptics is not inferior to antimicrobial activity to antiseptics, which can reduce the virulence of bacteria, by reducing their adhesive activity, and absorb toxins of microorganisms and tissue decomposition products on their surface, thus prevent their absorption, which will prevent the purulent-inflammatory process progression and sepsis development.Keywords: sorption composition, nanodisperse silica, antiseptics, adhesive properties of microorganisms, prevention of sepsis.
