Children take part in liturgical-ritual activities. In Sunday services, children’s church, Sunday school, and special services, children sit in pews, respond to Bible stories, and perform liturgical actions like singing in a choir, welcoming people, saying a prayer, or participating in the Lord’s Supper. Based on participant observations and interviews, this book describes and analyzes the variety of worship practices with children in Dutch Protestant contexts. A central concern is how people adapt worship to suit children and how children contribute to worship. The conclusions show children as agentive participants in worship. In addition, the conclusions nuance the debate on intergenerational worship, highlight the importance of spirituality for both adults and children, and explore how the material environment influences worship. This practical theological research gives a better understanding of Dutch Protestant liturgical rituals with children and their theological significance.

The paper focuses on the forms through which parents are involved in developing the spiritual welfare of their children. The study utilised a case study design to focus on Grace Community Christian Ministries Church (GCCM) in Kitengela. Data collection methods involved the use of interviews. A small group of nine parents - participants - from GCCM church membership was selected. The collected data was further analyzed thematically. The following themes were generated: teaching, Bible stories, family activities, prayer, modelling, Church attendance, choice of school, exhaustion and lack of time, lack of support from spouse, inexperience and, information gap. It was revealed that some of the ways parents got involved in nurturing their children spiritually included: teaching, Bible stories, family activities, prayer, modelling, Church attendance and choice of school for the children. However, the most common methods used were Church attendance and Sunday school. The paper thus recommends that GCCM church should train parents on how to empower their children spiritually at home so that they do not only rely on the activities in Sunday school.

Why do congregations have separate children’s worship instead of intergenerational worship? What connections do such practices have with the presence and work of a children’s minister? Is separate worship with children more common in certain kinds of congregations within Churches of Christ? In a mixed-methods study, we found trends between congregational demographics and worship practices. Our qualitative research revealed that children’s ministers often consider worship choices to be rooted in pragmatic decisions and not theological imperatives.

The purpose of this article is to present one aspect of a larger research project. The Spirit tradition (Charismatic) and its liturgical rituals as well as the Meal tradition (Liturgical Movement) and its liturgical rituals through history were researched as well as the concomitant theology. The aim was to gain a better understanding of whether the future of Charismatic worship can benefit from a somewhat closer integration of aspects of the meal tradition, especially the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. This article will mostly be focused on the empirical research done in this project within three Charismatic churches in Gauteng, South Africa. This research seeks to contribute to Robert Webber’s model of bringing old and new together in synergy. In the end, this article poses a new model for Charismatic worship when liturgical-rituals of the Spirit are combined with the celebration of communion in a way that worshippers experience as being more meaningful.

Most children's ministries focus their creative energies on the evangelization and discipleship of children. They offer excellent, well-planned events and programs that encourage children to form significant relationships, memorize Scripture, learn Bible stories in new and innovative ways, and experience deep and moving worship. Often overlooked is the importance of creating opportunities for children to serve. This article will argue that it is our biblical mandate to serve and that serving is spiritually forming for both adults and children. Various models of how churches are involving children in service opportunities will be explored, as well as the effects that it is having on children, their families, and our churches.

In most congregations, children participate in worship in various ways. In this article we pose the question: how can we describe and understand the variety in practices of worship with children? The case we consider is the Protestant context in the Netherlands. Archival research shows that since the introduction of differentiated worship for children, tension has arisen between worship with the entire congregation and worship aimed specifically at children. This tension between intergenerational worship and target-group worship persists; while most liturgists and youth work professionals argue for intergenerational worship, some defend the merits of target-group worship. However, in this ethnographic research we indicate that the portrayal of intergenerational worship as the ideal, and target-group worship as its opposite, or vice versa, leaves much of the normativity in worship with children hidden. We, therefore, deconstruct ideals of worship with children to open up other ways of understanding the variety of worship with children. In doing so, we argue that pedagogical and theological normativity influence worship practices in complex ways. Future research may advance this investigation by focusing on adults’ and children’s roles in shaping worship practices and exploring the theological implications of these practices in more depth and detail.

Learning in Sunday schools requires good innovation in order to produce quality learning. In this study, the authors examined the application of storytelling in telling Bible stories to Sunday school children. Therefore, the authors use a qualitative approach by conducting observations and directed discussions on participants so that data obtained about the application of storytelling methods. The results showed that the application of storytelling-assisted lecture methods was carried out in accordance with the steps. The application of storytelling also provides benefits in the form of Increased ability to understand children, as evidenced by the success of retelling stories, specifically Bible stories; increased listening ability in children; increased ability to remember, so that you can retell; increased listening ability in children. Children can concentrate on listening to the teacher's story. These results can be achieved because of an increase in listening, listening, remem-bering, and understanding so that the memorization process occurs which ultimately helps children retell stories that have been heard. Abstrak Pembelajaran pada Sekolah Minggu memerlukan inovasi yang baik agar meng-hasilkan kualitas belajar. Dalam penelitian ini penulis meneliti tentang penerapan storytelling dalam menceritakan kisah Alkitab pada anak Sekolah Minggu. Oleh karena itu, penulis menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan melakukan observasi dan diskusi terarah pada partisipan sehingga diper-oleh data tentang penerapan metode storytelling. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan metode ceramah berbantuan storytelling dilakukan sesuai dengan langkah-langkahnya. Penerapan storytelling juga memberikan manfaat berupa: meningkatnya kemampuan memahami pada anak, terbukti dari keber-hasilan menceritakan kembali cerita, secara khusus cerita Alkitab; mening-katnya kemampuan mendengar pada anak; meningkatnya kemampuan meng-ingat, sehingga dapat menceritakan kembali; meningkatnya kemampuan menyi-mak pada anak. Anak dapat berkonsentrasi untuk menyimak cerita guru. Hasil tersebut dapat tercapai karena terjadi peningkatan menyimak, mendengar, mengingat, dan memahami sehingga terjadi proses memorisasi yang akhirnya membantu anak-anak menceritakan kembali cerita yang telah didengar.

This investigation examined the response strategies and discrimination accuracy of adults and children aged 5–10 as the ratio of same to different trials was varied across three conditions of a “change/no-change” discrimination task. The conditions varied as follows: (a) a ratio of one-third same to two-thirds different trials (33% same), (b) an equal ratio of same to different trials (50% same), and (c) a ratio of two-thirds same to one-third different trials (67% same). Stimuli were synthetic consonant-vowel syllables that changed along a place of articulation dimension by formant frequency transition. Results showed that all subjects changed their response strategies depending on the ratio of same-to-different trials. The most lax response pattern was observed for the 50% same condition, and the most conservative pattern was observed for the 67% same condition. Adult response patterns were most conservative across condition. Differences in discrimination accuracy as measured by P(C) were found, with the largest difference in the 5- to 6-year-old group and the smallest change in the adult group. These findings suggest that children’s response strategies, like those of adults, can be manipulated by changing the ratio of same-to-different trials. Furthermore, interpretation of sensitivity measures must be referenced to task variables such as the ratio of same-to-different trials.
