Trends in transport have been changing and will continue to change over the next few years. A number of issues on the national and international transport scene have driven a need for organisations such as the Universities to further develop a sustainable transport strategy to encourage use of sustainable transport modes to achieve better environmental qualities on-campus. This research highlights the factors influencing the choice of using motorcars among student population for trips on-campus. A self-administered questionnaire was designed to collect data on "trip-makers" and "trip-making" characteristics and "preference to use motorcars as their main travel mode choice". The questionnaires were distributed to the student population who use motorcars oncampus. The total sample size selected was 100 and samples were selected from each Mahallah (hostel) by using stratified sampling method. The factors influencing use of motorcars on-campus was analysed using Pearson Chi- Square, Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient and t-test. The preference of the respondents on the measures that should be implemented to attract students to travel by sustainable transport modes such as walking, cycling, carpooling, or using public transportation are also discussed. The factors such as “year of study”, “vehicle registration status”, “travel time by walking from Mahallah (hostel) to Kulliyyah (faculty)” and “experienced delay time to the Kulliyyah” were found to influence the use of motorcars on-campus. 86% of the respondents were willing to shift from using motorcars to sustainable transportation modes. Recommendations to realize the willingness to shift from motorcars to other travel modes include: formulation of policy by the University authority to reduce the over-dependence on motorcars on campus; provision and management of efficient and effective public transportation services on-campus; provision and improvement of infrastructure to facilitate walking and cycling on-campus and strict enforcement on the use of illegal motorcars on-campus.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify research priorities to guide transportation stakeholders in their practice, education, and research. Design/methodology/approach – A literature review of published, conference proceedings, agency reports, books, and web site documents was conducted, aiming at the identification of the diverging strategies and practices undertaken by transportation stakeholders in order to be able to generate initial meaningful insights about a sustainable transportation system. Findings – Sustainable transportation systems are in certain way a new paradigm where a business-as-usual approach is not possible. Vehicle makers produce more energy efficient vehicles. Nevertheless, fossil fuel is still the predominant source of energy. Regarding the level of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, non-motorized transport modes are preferable over motorized transport modes, and public transportation modes preferable to private transportation modes. It is also import to include environmental consideration along the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of the transportation infrastructure. While vehicles powered by alternate fuel such as biofuel, electricity, and/or fuel cell are becoming more popular, shifting to more sustainable transport modes would also require changes on commuter behaviors and individual preferences. Practical implications – The paper discusses the efforts that are underway for decoupling transport and CO2 emissions, being useful for transportation stakeholders to implement or improve the effectiveness of their potential or current sustainability transport initiatives through the identification of strategies, opportunities, and barriers. Originality/value – Although there is plenty of good information about sustainability and transportation modes in literature, most of the articles analyzed focus on specific factors of the whole transportation system. The originality/value of this paper is found in the holistic perspective, here presented, of the state of the art issues that a sustainable transport system would encompass.

[ID] Dalam upaya menciptakan suatu system transportasi yang baik di kota Pekanbaru, keberadaan Trans Metro Pekanbaru sebagai moda transportasi utama amat perlu dikembangkan secara konsisten dan menerus. Setiap rute pelayanan tersebut memiliki karakteristik tersendiri terkait jenis pelayanan dan karakteristik rute yang dilayani. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kualitas pelayanan dalam perbandingan rute pelayanan agar menjadi pertimbangan dalam perhitungan kualitas pelayanan angkutan umum Trans Metro Pekanbaru. Batasan dari penelitian ini adalah hanya membandingkan dua rute perjalanan, yakni rute 2 yang menghubungkan Terminal BRPS-Kulim (rute komersial) dan rute 3 yang menghubungkan Ramayana-UIN Suska Panam (Rute komersial dan pendidikan). Analisis IPA (Importance-Performance Analysis) digunakan untuk mengetahui kualitas pelayanan antar rute perjalanan Trans Metro Pekanbaru sehingga memudahkan dalam penentuan prioritas bagi Trans Metro dalam melakukan peningkatan pelayanannya untuk setiap rute pelayanan. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 279 orang untuk setiap rute perjalanan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan pada setiap rute perjalanan. Secara umum, Hal ini dikarenakan penumpang memberi alasan tentang ketertarikan untuk menggunakan Trans Metro Pekanbaru adalah lebih menarik dibanding moda yang lain. Sehingga, strategi peningkatan kualitas dari segi waktu pelayanan menjadi perhatian serius bagi Trans Metro Pekanbaru untuk mencapai sebuah system transportasi yang lebih baik dan menuju transportasi yang berkelanjutan di kota Pekanbaru. [EN] In an effort to create a good transportation system in the city of Pekanbaru, the existence of Trans Metro Pekanbaru as the main transportation mode is very necessary to be developed consistently and continuously. Each service route has its own characteristics related to the type of service and the characteristics of the routes served. The purpose of this research is to find out the quality of service in the comparison of service routes so that it becomes a consideration in calculating the quality of Trans Metro Pekanbaru public transportation services. The limitation of this study is to only compare two travel routes, namely route 2 which connects BRPS-Kulim Terminal (commercial route) and route 3 which connects Suska Panam Ramayana-UIN (commercial and educational routes). IPA analysis (Importance-Performance Analysis) is used to determine the quality of service between Trans Metro Pekanbaru travel routes so as to facilitate the prioritization of Trans Metro in improving its services for each service route. The study sample was 279 people for each route. The results of the study show that there are differences in each route. In general, this is because passengers giving reasons for their interest in using Trans Metro Pekanbaru are more attractive than other modes. Thus, the strategy of improving quality in terms of service time is a serious concern for Trans Metro Pekanbaru to achieve a better transportation system and towards sustainable transportation in the city of Pekanbaru.

The purpose of this article is to provide information to determine that telecommuting in Ecuador can be used as a measure of sustainable transport. Briefly, sustainable development is described, and certain definitions and approaches related to sustainable transport are covered, for instance, the Avoid-Shift-Improve (ASI) approach, as well as the Transport Demand Management (TDM), which serve to validate from a conceptual point of view the application and usefulness of telecommuting. An overview of the current situation in the transport sector in Ecuador is analyzed; the final energy demand; the environmental aspects related to transport, and the amount of public and private employees that are telecommuting. Taking into consideration some hypothesis, such as car ownership rate, the total amount of kilometers driven per year, the assumption of the distance travelled by employees who take public transportation; the assumptions helped to determine the savings that can be obtained through telecommuting in the present time. Therefore, these results would provide adequate information for decision makers to establish a conclusive pronouncement on whether or not support telecommuting as a valid working approach, and to develop the necessary policies to maintain it over time.

This study was motivated by the case of the disappearance of legal bus services due to their loss in competition with a kind of car services called “Travel” for the corridor of Padang - Pesisir Selatan, West Sumatera, Indonesia. Travel might not legal public transport services, and therefore, in this study is also called un-official public transportation. This study aims to determine the driving attributes for passenger’s satisfaction of un-official public transportation services and to figure out the service attributes that need to be improved according to passengers’ perceptions. Data was collected using random sampling with a total sample of 160 respondents and was analyzed using the Importance Satisfaction Analysis (ISA) method. Quadrant analysis of ISA revealed that the availability of music and air conditioner on-board is not so essential but resulting a higher satisfaction to passengers. Passengers are calling for an improvement of the services by consistently implementing the law against a driver who uses a mobile phone while driving or driving inconsiderately, and improving the courtesy and friendliness of the driver.

The competitiveness of a travel chain largely depends on the travel conditions along the sequence of journeys within the chain. This paper shows a method to analyse and to optimize the service quality along a travel chain. Travel comfort is a very important qualitative feature of the public transportation service, where travel comfort is used in a broader sense to describe ride quality and transfer quality including mobility, information, safety, security, and naturally comfort aspects. The analysis of travel comfort in the literature regards public transportation services. Several synthetic indices, which consider user judgment about service aspects, were developed to describe travel comfort, and comprehensive analyses have been published. However, to describe the competitiveness of the public transport the focus from the individual services should be moved toward the integrated service of the travel chain from the beginning to the end. The characteristics of travel comfort along the travel chain should be described and the location and rate of necessary interventions should be identified. In this paper we analyse the travel comfort features of travel chains. This paper proposes a method, which describes the travel comfort characteristics with synthetic indices based on the individual comfort indices of travel components, and uses a fuzzy approach to give an overall analysis of comfort conditions along the travel chain. The proposed method helps to identify the quality fluctuation and the weak points of a travel chain and makes the attractiveness of alternative travel chains comparable. An illustrative case study was carried out for one of the major transportation corridor of Budapest (Hungary), to exemplify the approach, where the validity of the method was tested as well. The results confirmed the usefulness and applicability of the methodology; by its application very valuable insights can be gained regarding the location and type of the necessary interventions. The results of our research are helpful to evaluate the actual service level of sustainable alternatives of individual car usage and to promote modal shift towards sustainable transportation modes.

The transition to sustainable transportation is challenging for governments, transport operators and travellers (Liu, Yu, Trisha, & Beimborn, 2020). In this research, the challenges for development and implementation of sustainable mobility have been researched from a multi-actor perspective for the rural area. This thesis's overall research objective is: to identify the challenges and opportunities of the transition towards sustainable mobility in Dutch rural areas from a multi-actor perspective. The study area of this research is the Achterhoek. Multiple methods are used to conduct this research. A literature study was conducted into travel behaviour, sustainable transport, rural mobility, and multiple actors' role in the transition of sustainable mobility. Subsequently, an analysis was carried out of OViN and ODiN data (Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland, CBS) in which travel behaviour, motives and transport choices were presented. Besides, a survey was conducted among respondents living in the Achterhoek (N = 399). A policy analysis at the national, provincial, and regional level has been carried out concerning (sustainable) transport and mobility to gain insight into the government’s and transport operator's perspective. In-depth interviews were held with various actors in the area: the province, municipality, 8RHK (semi-government), entrepreneurs and transport operators.With a cooperative structure, actors aim at realising sustainable mobility. However, current policies focus on the provision of sustainable transportation instead of focusing on sustainable mobility, without a complete understanding of the needs, opportunities, and abilities of the travellers and the actors' goals. This is an important finding in understanding the challenges regarding developing and implementing sustainable mobility in rural areas. Therefore, for establishing sustainable mobility, an approach that emphasized changing travel behaviour for specific traveller groups will be more successful (Ahmed et al., 2020; Hamidi & Zhao, 2020; Zhang & Van Acker, 2017). From this research it can be concluded that the current travel behaviour of the people in the Achterhoek is not very sustainable. Dominant car use, little use of public transportation and indispensability of cars according to respondents will be a challenge for governments and operators when it comes to implementation of sustainable mobility. Travellers do not play a big role in most of the policies of governments and transport operators. However, as mobility is all about someone’s ability to travel from origin to destination with a certain travel mode, the travellers should also have a place in the whole transition towards sustainable mobility. Therefore, the biggest challenge is to change the travellers travel behaviour into sustainable travel behaviour.

Many studies conclude commuting that has an impact on the quality of life of the commuter both in the physical, psychological, health, and environmental aspects of the commuter. Increased risk of musculoskeletal disorder (MSD), obesity, increased blood pressure, and low physical health conditions are found in prolonged commuting activities as the existing problem in public health. This study using cross sectional design with WHO QOL BREF questionnaire.  The total sample 155 respondents of commuting working using KRL Commuter Line Bogor to Jakarta in 2018. The initial model for assessing the relationship directly and indirectly between quality of life among commuting workers and travel uncomfortable, health complaint, psychological condition, bad experience, and income was constructed on the basis of severe hypotheses Based on the results of the path analysis it was found that income has a direct effect on quality of life. Psychological conditions have a direct effect on quality of life. Psychological condition is intervening variable for travel uncomfortable and health complaints as indirect effect. These results may help to identify the direct factor to improve the quality of life among commuting workers and as a basis for developing policies to improve the quality of public transportation services for commuting workers, and as a basis for formulating policies related to housing development locations that are integrated with public transportation facilities.

AbstrakPengoperasian Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Purwokerto-Purbalingga bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pelayanan bagi para penggunanya. Faktanya, 70% pengguna BRT adalah wanita sehingga dibutuhkan keterlibatan wanita demi menunjang keberlangsungan pembangunan kota, khususnya pada layanan transportasi umum. Di sisi lain, Purwokerto dan Purbalingga merupakan wilayah yang telah berorientasi smart city. Pada Garuda Smart City Model, yaitu sebuah model smart city initiative, terdapat smart economy di mana klaster layanannya adalah smart mobility dan bagian penting dari smart mobility adalah layanan transportasi umum. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui hubungan sosio-ekonomi meliputi demografi dan pengalaman pengguna wanita dengan preferensinya terhadap layanan BRT. Selain itu, kesiapan kedua wilayah dalam penerapan smart city terutama smart mobility juga perlu diukur. Metode yang digunakan adalah kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Metode kuantitatif meliputi statistika deskriptif dan uji Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), sedangkan metode kualitatif digunakan untuk menganalisis indikator kesiapan smart mobility. Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa preferensi pada kriteria ekonomi, sosial, dan lingkungan memiliki respons yang signifikan terhadap sosio-ekonomi. Berdasarkan indikator kesiapan smart mobility, operasional BRT baru siap terhadap indikator aksesibilitas BRT. Indikator lain seperti akses multimoda transportasi, akses transportasi internasional, teknologi informasi dan komunikasi (TIK) untuk mendukung mobilitas, dan transportasi berkelanjutan dapat dikatakan belum siap. Oleh karena itu, dibutuhkan kajian yang komprehensif dan kebijakan yang mendukung dalam menuju kesiapan smart mobility, sehingga BRT mampu menjadi transportasi andalan yang nyaman, aman, dan profesional.Kata kunci: Layanan, Preferensi Wanita, Bus Rapid Transit, Smart Mobility.AbstractThe Service of Bus Rapid Transit of Purwokerto-Purbalingga for Female Users towards Readiness of Smart Mobility Dimension: Operating Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) of Purwokerto-Purbalingga aims to improve services for its users. In fact, 70% of BRT users are women, so it requires the involvement of female users to support the sustainability of urban development, especially in public transportation services. On the other hand, Purwokerto and Purbalingga are areas that have been smart city-oriented. In the Garuda Smart City Model, which is a smart city initiative model, there is a smart economy where the service cluster is smart mobility and its main part is public transportation service. This research is conducted to determine the socio-economic correlation of demographics and experience of female users of BRT with their preferences toward the services. In addition, the readiness of the two regions in the application of the smart city, especially smart mobility, also needs to be measured. The methods used were quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative methods include descriptive and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test, while qualitative methods were used to analyze indicators of smart mobility readiness. The results obtained show that preferences for economic, social, and environmental criteria have a significant response to socioeconomic. Based on smart mobility readiness indicators, BRT operations are only ready on the indicator of BRT accessibility. Other indicators such as multimodal transportation access, international transportation access, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to support mobility, and sustainable transportation are not ready yet. Therefore, comprehensive studies and policies that support smart mobility are needed so that BRT can become a reliable, safe, and professional transportation.Keywords:  Service, Women’s Preference, Bus Rapid Transit, Smart Mobility.

AbstractThe greatest challenge of physically-challenged individuals is mobility, thereby making access to public transportation essential to independent living for these individuals. The study was conducted in Oyo State. Multistage sampling method comprising purposive and simple random sampling was used to select a sample size of 226 students from three special education centres in the state. Findings revealed that factors such as operators’ impatience/discrimination, waiting time and lack of assistance were major problems that affects accessibility to IPTs. Furthermore, results showed that difficulties experienced by the physically-challenged individuals differ significantly by the nature of disability as evidenced by a chi-square value of 37.218, p<0.05. It was therefore recommended that government should listen more to these transport disadvantaged people living with disabilities and integrate their concerns/suggestions in the design, implementation and monitoring of transport infrastructure and services as well as providing sustainable transport means to their transport challenges.
