The generation of a directed flow on the water surface in channels with sources and resonators of capillary oscillations is detected and investigated. The surface flow is caused by the movement of the liquid through the gaps between the resonators, as well as between the resonator and the channel walls, under a curved surface that is locally deformed by the sources of capillary vibrations, the transfer of energy of the locally curved surface of the liquid by capillary waves, and the transmission of wave momentum to the particles of the liquid surface in one direction. It is shown that capillary waves together with the energy transfer an excess surface, the flux density of which is equal to the flux of the surface deformation. Moving devices with a capillary-wave accelerator of the surface liquid flow are demonstrated.

The generation of surface water flow in channels with sources and resonators of capillary oscillations is detected and investigated. Moving devices with a capillary-wave accelerator of the surface fluid flow are demonstrated. The surface flow of liquid in the channel is generated due to the local deformation of the liquid surface by capillary vibrations and the formation of an excess liquid surface on average near the source and the transport of this surface by waves.

The impact of a spherical water drop onto a water surface has been studied experimentally with the aid of a 35 mm drum camera giving high-resolution images that provided qualitative and quantitative data on the phenomena. Scaling laws for the time to reach maximum cavity sizes have been derived and provide a good fit to the experimental results. Transitions between the regimes for coalescence-only, the formation of a high-speed jet and bubble entrapment have been delineated. The high-speed jet was found to occur without bubble entrapment. This was caused by the rapid retraction of the trough formed by a capillary wave converging to the centre of the cavity base. The converging capillary wave has a profile similar to a Crapper wave. A plot showing the different regimes of cavity and impact drop behaviour in the Weber–Froude number-plane has been constructed for Fr and We less than 1000.

A uniform axial or transverse magnetic field is applied on the silicon oil based ferrofluid of high Prandtl number fluid (Pr ? 111.67), and the effect of magnetic field on the thermocapillary convection is investigated. It is shown that the location of vortex core of thermocapillary convection is mainly near the free surface of liquid bridge due to the inhibition of the axial magnetic field. A velocity stagnation region is formed inside the liquid bridge under the axial magnetic field (B = 0.3-0.5 T). The disturbance of bulk reflux and surface flow is suppressed by the increasing axial magnetic field. There is a dynamic response of free surface deformation to the axial magnetic field, and then the contact angle variation of the free surface at the hot corner is as following, ?hot, B = 0.5 T = 83.34? > ?hot, B = 0.3 T = 72.16? > > ?hot,B = 0.1 T = 54.21? > ?hot, B = 0 T = 43.33?. The results show that temperature distribution near the free surface is less and less affected by thermocapillary convection with the increasing magnetic field, and it presents a characteristic of heat-conduction. In addition, the transverse magnetic field does not realize the fundamental inhibition for thermocapillary convection, but it transfers the influence of thermocapillary convection to the free surface.

The accurate prediction of ground effect aerodynamics is an important aspect of wing-in-ground (WIG) effect vehicle design. When WIG vehicles operate over water, the deformation of the nonrigid surface beneath the body may affect the aerodynamic performance of the craft. The likely surface deformation has been considered from a theoretical and numerical position. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases have been considered, and results show that any deformation occurring on the water surface is likely to be caused by the wing tip vortices rather than an increased pressure distribution beneath the wing.

The process of particle impacting and contacting curved surface of vane was studied, and the characteristics of particle size, particle initial velocity and its impacting direction affect the stress of subsurface were analyzed by using ANSYS/LS-DANY software. It is shown that the interaction between particles and surface of vane is affected by nonlinear factors such as the elastic-plastic property of material, the state of impacting and contacting and surface shape. The increment in particle size increases the stress of the surface impacted and the sphere of action is also enlarged. The influence of the size of particles is remarkable. Particle impact velocity is related to energy exchange and has influences on stress value and the area of surface deformation. Due to impact angle is related to shape of curved vane, so the distribution of stress is changed and the value of the stress in surface layer is also influenced when particles impact curved surface of vane from different directions. The research will be helpful to disclose the mechanics of the wear on the condition of particle impact.

Soil moisture and Olsen P concentrations play an important role in phosphorus (P) losses in runoff. Under moisture-rich anaerobic conditions, the reduction of Fe-oxides dissolves P from the soil into solution that may be available for loss by transport processes. Under very dry conditions, soil hydrophobicity induced by soil organic C can exacerbate infiltration-excess surface flow and soil erosion. Our hypotheses were as follows: (1) rainfall applied to a dry soil would cause greater particulate P losses in surface runoff due to hydrophobicity; (2) P losses from a wet soil would be dominated by drainage and filtered P; and (3) both runoff processes would result in environmentally unacceptable P losses at agronomically productive Olsen P concentrations depending on the sorption capacity (anion storage capacity; ASC) of the soil. Superphosphate was added to a Brown and Organic soil (Olsen P initially 7 and 13mgL–1 respectively) to create a range of Olsen P concentrations. Soils were placed in boxes, soil moisture adjusted (<10% or 90% available water holding capacity) and artificial rainfall applied at a rate equivalent to a storm event (5-year return interval; 30–35mmh–1) and surface runoff and drainage collected. Surface runoff was measured as infiltration-excess surface flow from dry Organic soil (water drop penetration time >3600s), and as saturation-excess surface flow from the wet Brown soil (water drop penetration time <5s). Total P (TP) concentrations in surface flow from both soils increased linearly with Olsen P concentration. Compared with dry Organic soil, the wet Brown soil lost a greater proportion of TP as particulate via surface runoff. However, due to the high hydraulic conductivity and low ASC, the most important pathway for the Organic soil, wet or dry, was filtered P loss in drainage. These data can be used to more effectively target strategies to mitigate P losses.
