The schism between theory and practice is reflected in English studies. British technological universities have attempted to meet the needs of industry in technical fields. Economic and academic pressures often make this difficult. A degree in modern English studies is planned which attempts to combine traditional academic values and functional needs. A new approach to rhetoric combining linguistic and critical disciplines with practical skills in communication can combine liberal and vocational needs. The course content of the degree and the teaching approach is related to the ethos of a technological university.

The article examines one of the actual problems of the theory and practice of the logistics systems functioning related to the asymmetry of information in the transport services market. Assessing the level of asymmetry in logistics systems is of fundamental importance to increase the competitiveness of relevant systems. New approach formulated herein estimates the logistics systems asymmetry by taking into account information asymmetry about the quality of transport products, as well as information asymmetry about the quality of products within the boundaries of the corresponding supply chain. This approach allows to take into account its potential capabilities and increase functional stability in the process of logistics systems design.

The article focuses on a holistic retrospective analysis of the history of media education in Canada, which has been done for the first time. Based on the theoretical findings of Canadian media educators, the authors substantiate the periodization, identify the trends, the periodization criteria and three main periods of establishment and development of Canadian media education in the context of sociopolitical and socio-pedagogical determinants. The historical preconditions of the development of media education in Canada are revealed. The essence of media education is regarded as a theory study and development of practical skills for mastering modern mass media, which is considered as part of a specific, autonomous field of knowledge in pedagogical theory and practice. The authors determine that media education is associated with all types of media, which include the set of information and communication tools that each person interacts with in everyday life: printed (newspapers, magazines), auditive (radio, audio) and screen or audiovisual media (cinema, TV, video, multimedia, Internet, etc.); they identify the essential characteristics of media education, determine that media education is the form of media literacy and media culture of an individual; as well as they find out, characterize and systematize the gaps in media education in Canada. The article presents the evolution of media education programs, techniques as well as media education associations. In the context of studying the experience of Canadian media theorists and practitioners, the necessity of applying positive Canadian experience to solve the problems of implementing media education in Ukraine in terms of reforming and humanizing its educational space has been substantiated.

The objective of the current research was to verify the extent to which Gouldner’s (1954) three patterns of bureaucracy were prevalent in intercollegiate athletic departments. Single and multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) of the data provided by 907 coaches from all three NCAA divisions (ndivI= 322; ndivII= 277; ndivIII= 308) showed that structural relationships among goals, processes, and patterns of bureaucracy were invariant among all three groups of coaches. Substantively, the factor of developmental goals through developmental processes (Trail & Chelladurai, 2000) predicted positively the presence ofrepresentative bureaucracyandpunishment-centered bureaucracyand negatively the existence ofmock bureaucracy. This means that the more athletic departments emphasize academic values, the less the coaches perceive a pattern of loose coupling between rules and actual technical activities. Implications of these results for theory and practice were discussed.

Purpose – Noting findings by Michaelson and Stacks in the USA and Zerfass and colleagues in Europe that research-based measurement and evaluation (M & E) of public relations and corporate communication are still not widely applied despite more than a century of discussion and intense focus since the 1970s, the purpose of this paper is to explore the causes of this deadlock and presents an alternative approach and model to overcome identified obstacles and provide new insights to advance this important area of theory and practice. Design/methodology/approach – This paper is informed by critical analysis of the large body of literature on M & E, analysis of M & E reports, and ethnographic research among senior management. Findings – This analysis reveals that, along with long-cited barriers such as lack of budget, lack of knowledge and lack of standards, three other obstacles prevent demonstration of the value of PR and corporate communication. Based on critical analysis of literature and M & E reports and ethnography, this paper presents a new approach and model for M & E to help practitioners overcome these obstacles. Research limitations/implications – This analysis and the approach and model presented address an area of concern identified in research globally, such as a 2008 Delphi study by Watson and the European Communication Monitor in 2011 and 2012. The findings provide theoretical and practical contributions to address the deadlock between normative theories of M & E and practical implementation. Originality/value – The approach and M & E model presented make a significant original contribution to theory and practice.

PurposeThe pracademia movement is gaining increasing traction in education, particularly in educational leadership. Offered as a means to bridge practice and academia, questions remain as to whether it resolves or perpetuates the theory–practice divide. This paper systematically approaches this problem.Design/methodology/approachTheoretically informed by the relational approach, this conceptual paper articulates the preliminaries and underlying assumptions of pracademia before exploring the implications for the field of educational leadership.FindingsHaving established the underlying assumptions, this paper offers three standards – description, explanation and alternative – for assessing knowledge claims in the field that does not default to distinct knowledge worlds (e.g. academic, practice) or categories of knowledge generators (e.g. academics, practitioners, pracademics).Originality/valueThrough a relational approach, this work breaks down the boundaries of theory and practice to offer a new way of thinking about knowledge claims. The new approach is consistent with the intent of bridging theory and practice without the need to assume them to be separate in the first place.

The course “Social and Psychological Lecturer’s Adaptation in Professional Activity (for People with Disabilities)” is relevant and expedient for university students. There is a constantly growing interest in the issues of people with disabilities and their professional activities, inclusive education in modern society. We consider the purpose, objectives of the discipline, competencies and indicators that should be formed as a result of mastering the course. The discipline allows students to deepen their knowledge on issues of social and psychological adaptation in the field of professional lecturer activity, to pay attention to the activities of specialists with disabilities, to gain skills for the upcoming professional activity. The special significance in the selection of the course content and the role of practical classes are emphasized. Among the forms of independent work, it is preferable to maintain a dictionary of terms, abstracts, preparation of reports, etc. In course development, it is necessary to rely on the goals and objectives of the discipline associated with today's needs. It is recommended to select the content of the material taking into account principles of science, the connection of theory and practice, age and individual characteristics of the students. Planning of classes on the course is possible with interdisciplinary connections with such sciences as sociology, psychology, pedagogy, special psychology and correctional pedagogy.

The scientific article reveals the purpose and meaning, subject and content (knowledge, skills, abilities) of the discipline «Compensation ofmilitary unit employees», its place in the system of specialists training of accounting specialties. The value of the discipline is to providefundamental knowledge and practical skills in the organization of remuneration of labour, to teach how to charge and pay wages correctly and timely to employees of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to be able to analyze expenses related to compensation of employees of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The task of this discipline is to form and develop general and professional competencies in this field, to train fully developed, qualified and competitive military specialists capable of carrying out financial and economic activities of the military unit.It has been established that in today's conditions, in order to ensure quality education in military higher education institutions, special attention must be paid to the introduction of advanced pedagogical technologies in the educational process. Accounting disciplines, unlike many other economic disciplines, are based on events that are changing rapidly. Therefore, in order to form a high-quality military financier, the main emphasis in teaching accounting should not be on mechanical memorization of educational material, but on the development of thinking. The question of the close relationship between theory and practice is relevant nowadays.

In recent years, there has been a great increase in the daily use of technology, to the extent that people are almost permanently connected to the Internet. In our particular case, we are interested in maintaining information security, which is known as cybersecurity. Traditional security techniques are obsolete, so it becomes necessary to acquire new practical skills with a problem-based learning methodology. Therefore, this paper presents a new approach based on virtual-remote laboratories for the creation of dynamic cybersecurity scenarios in the Cloud. Additionally, the factors that influence the intentions of the participants in the subject employed for this work have been studied. This information has been gathered by using both the answers obtained from an opinion survey and available information in the activity records of the educative labs.

AbstractThe article connects historical developments in analytics with contexts of today and school experiments: Woehlk test and Fearon’s test are historically known as the reactions of lactose and maltose with ammonia and methylamine, respectively. Both lead to characteristic red dyes whose formation and structural formulae had not been of interest or had even been reported incorrectly until 2015. Even though these tests, developed in the first half of the twentieth century, are obsolete in medicinal analysis today, they pose interesting experiments for school chemistry, when investigating the topic of macromolecules or sugars. In an inquiry or context-based teaching approach, tests visualizing different lactose concentrations in different dairy products would fit into the contexts milk and chemical detection of diseases. The experiments can also be used in a historically based problem-oriented approach in which the scientists, their work and lives can be the central perspective. As both methods of analysis result in brightly colored solutions, they are easily interpretable as well as aesthetically appealing to students. As the test developed by Fearon is quicker and makes use of less dangerous chemicals, it is the one to be preferably used in school.
