Academic performance occupies an important role in adolescent development. It reflects adolescents’ cognitive ability and also shapes their academic and career paths. Students who are satisfied with their school performance tend to show higher self-esteem, confidence, and motivation. Previous research has suggested that students’ problem behaviors, such as Internet Addiction (IA), and academic values, including intrinsic and utility values, could predict satisfaction with academic performance. However, the influence of IA and academic values has not been thoroughly explored in Chinese contexts where the pressure for academic success is heavy. This study examined the relationships between IA, academic values (intrinsic and utility value), and satisfaction with academic performance using two waves of data collected from secondary school students in four cities in mainland China. The matched sample included a total of 2,648 Grade 7 or 8 students (57.1% were boys with a mean age of 13.1 years at Wave 1). Participants completed the same questionnaire containing validated measures at both waves with a 1-year interval. In line with the hypotheses, multiple regression analyses showed that Wave 1 IA was a significant negative predictor of Wave 2 intrinsic value, utility value, and satisfaction with academic performance and their changes. Results of mediation analyses revealed that only intrinsic value, but not utility value, positively predicted satisfaction with academic performance. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses also showed similar findings. Two observations are concluded from the present findings: IA impaired students’ intrinsic value, utility value, and perceived satisfaction with academic performance; two aspects of academic values demonstrated different influences on satisfaction with academic performance. These findings provide implications for the promotion of academic satisfaction experienced by students and the prevention of negative effects of IA.

In this paper, I address two connected topics: firstly, the relationships between linguists working in academia and language professionals, such as communication managers and consultants, in other sectors; and secondly, how a strong emphasis on knowledge exchange and impact in British higher education policy has led to increased collaboration between academic and non-academic language workers, but also to a realignment of traditional academic values with the interests of practitioners. The investigation is partly based on published reflections – mostly by linguists – on collaborating with (language) professionals in other sectors, and partly on insights from 13 interviews with language workers in consulting, communications and campaigning. The interviews are manually analysed for thematic categories and, where relevant, for pragmatic meanings in the context of the interview situation and conversational interaction. Findings suggest conflicts around registers and timescales, along with concerns over data and the relevance of academic interests. Crucially, language professionals show little concern about collaborating with academics, leading to an imbalance in interests. I supplement the evidence with personal observations on the opportunities and obstacles that are present when straddling academic and non-academic work, as well as with a discussion of how a unidirectional realignment of values changes the nature of academic work.

<p>Hampir setiap pelajar di Indonesia terdaftar dengan atribut profil yang lengkap, seperti : Nama, Jenis Kelamin, Jenis Tinggal, Alat Transportasi, Usia Orangtua, Pendidikan Orangtua, Pekerjaan Orangtua, Penghasilan Orangtua dan atribut lainnya. The article analyses the problem of institutional changes at the university as an academic system in a pandemic. The academic values of the modern university professional community include the social responsibility of the university. In the new conditions, this value dimension of the role of the university in the life of society determines the main directions of research on transformations of the university as the most important social institution. The factors of institutional sustainability of university education are determined. The author examines the role of the university in overcoming global and local risks.

This article shows how the foundations of the journal Recherche et Applications en Marketing were laid by the AFM (Association Française du Marketing – French Marketing Association). It underlines the context of its creation and recalls the main issues and challenges that successive editors-in-chief, during the launch (1986–1989) and consolidation periods (1990–2010), had to face with regard to the evolution of its environment. It analyzes the positioning of the journal in terms of international academic standards and of content. It raises remnant issues and outlines some perspectives for the future. However, mainly, this article shows how the creation and development of the journal was a shared adventure for the successive editors and the AFM, on the basis of common academic values.

The Gelao nationality is one of the oldest minorities in southern China recognized by the academic circles. However, up to now, the genealogical research of Gelao nationality is still very weak. The reason is that the genealogical data of the Gelao nationality is extremely scarce at present, which seriously affects the development of relevant research. Therefore, it is urgent to collect and sort out the genealogy of the Gelao nationality in a comprehensive and systematic manner. The genealogy research of Gelao nationality will use the following methods: the combination of document acquisition method and field survey method; digital collection method; document cataloging method and summary method; content analysis and value analysis; intra-ethnic and inter-ethnic comparative analysis. The Gelao genealogy research has several academic values: it provides solid data support for related research in philology, ethnology, history, and other disciplines; it helps to expand the research scope and field of genealogy; it helps to promote the in-depth development of Gelao studies. The practical significance of the study of Gelao genealogy: it helps to promote family construction in Gelao areas; it helps to enhance the cultural confidence of Gelao people and maintain the harmony and stability of Gelao areas.

Referring to Ministerial Regulation of PAN-RB No. 16 of 2009 on Teacher Functional Status and Credit Score, it is clearly mentioned that one of the key components to apply teacher promotion is scientific writing (KTI). However, in fact, it was found that many teachers were independently constrained, especially in Sibolga City. As a result, the chance to get a higher rank and to be placed would be hampered. In addition, even some teachers are caught up in taking shortcuts by using the third part services to prepare their scientific writing, which of course, are not acceptable in publication ethics and academic values. In line with the results of preliminary observations made by the team, it was noticed that the teachers writing ability can be improved by providing them writing coaching class, including explanations and even training materials that need to be used in scientific writing. This writing coaching class is intended to provide teachers an opportunity to develop their skills, especially skill to write down scientific papers. Writing coaching class will be done by encouraging teachers to compose their ideas, formulating their problems, obtaining references sources, providing consultation rooms, implementing ethics and scientific publishing regulation, and selecting places where scientific papers will be published.

In the study reported on in this article, we explored the preparation practices used to prepare student teachers to use English language skills in disciplinary content teaching. Despite studies which emphasise generic academic literacy where language is a subset of this field discourse, there is a dearth of research studies on the use of English in the specific context of disciplines in initial teacher education (ITE), which is addressed here. Guided by social constructivism, we collected data from 102 purposively selected student teachers from 3 universities. A qualitative multiple case study design was used as the methodological tool, and data from focus group discussions and document analysis were collected, documented and analysed. The results of the analysis show that the student teachers were prepared using structured and unstructured English Across the Curriculum (EAC) pedagogical activities. Structured activities are content oriented learning processes that are largely rigid and prescriptive, while unstructured activities are rooted in the academic values and identity that are held in the institution. Although drawn from a relatively small sample, these findings may assist ITE institutions to develop a curriculum that attends to multiple strategies for developing student teachers’ strategic competence in EAC.

For Kuhn, there are a number of values which provide scientists with a shared basis for theory-choice. These values include accuracy, breadth, consistency, simplicity and fruitfulness. Each of these values may be interpreted in different ways. Moreover, there may be conflict between the values in application to specific theories. In this short paper, Kuhn's idea of scientific values is extended to the value of academic freedom. The value of academic freedom may be interpreted in a number of different ways. Moreover, there are other values which play a role in the functioning of our academic institutions. As with the possible conflict between scientific values, there may be conflict among the academic values.
