An authoring system is a key computer tool for facilitating the creation of instructional lessons (courseware) for the computer. While authoring systems have been around for many years, few if any have had both the flexibility and power needed to create sophisticated instructional materials. This article describes what is meant by an authoring system, and why educators should consider using one. The specifications for what we believe is a new generation of authoring system is then presented, with a detailed description of the capabilities which should be included. Finally, we present the results of our efforts in creating and using an authoring system with the desired characteristics.

Traditionally, the development of computerbased instructional materials has relied on the use of programming languages and computer programmers. This has often made development prohibitively difficult, time-consuming and expensive. It has also meant that it has been difficult for enthusiastic subject experts to develop their own teaching materials. In order to address these problems a wide variety of authoring systems have been produced which allow the rapid development of instructional materials by reducing the amount of low-level coding necessary for their implementation. A problem which arises from this proliferation, however, is that subject experts find it hard to identify the best tool for a particular development task. This book has been written essentially with the aim of providing potential educational software authors with a brief background to instructional design, an overview of some currently available authoring systems, and a means by which an informed choice of authoring system can be made.DOI:10.1080/0968776950030120

Abstract This study explores the depictions of landscapes and emotions in the ninth-century hagiographies associated with Liudger: the three vitae Liudgeri and Liudger’s own vita Gregorii. The Frisian missionary founded the monastery of Werden, situated near the Frankish-Saxon frontier. It will be argued that previous historiography on early medieval frontiers has predominantly focused on the military nature of frontiers. Here, more cultural or symbolic natures of the Frankish-Saxon frontier will be discussed. The hagiographical narratives will be examined in conjunction with the notion of a frontier as a ‘third space’. The vitae Liudgeri shaped a discourse that legitimated Liudger’s translation to Werden. This resulted in the creation of a new place of Christian worship in the competitive landscape of post-conquest Saxony, as part of the Christianization of the region. Monasteries like Werden were the places where new missionaries were educated who would continue this Christianization. Exemplary emotional behaviour of the saints, narrated in hagiographies, could help instruct this new generation. Altfrid and Liudger tried to dissuade emotions of anger, indicated by ira or furor, with their hagiographical narratives. These two perspectives offer a glimpse into the attempts of a local monastery to stand out in the Frankish-Saxon frontier.

The time limits of the life of one generation are about 25-30 years, so lived in the struggle for building its own state and its armed defence, this time for Ukraine goes down in the history of the first generation of creation and attempts to comply with four military doctrines (1993-2004-2012-2015), in which our own defence course was proclaimed. The theoretical basis of these official documents of significance were certain paradigms of military-political thinking, according to which Ukraine did not consider it a continuation of politics. The direction and principles of military policy (defence or security policy in European terminology) for modern Ukraine from the mid-20s of the XIX century, as well as 100 years ago, again came to the fore in connection with the implementation of previously abstract concepts " annexation "," occupation "," war ", which allegedly did not exist for our country in recent history. But today they have been embodied or, in the image of Franz Kafka, "reincarnated" into threatening forms of Russia's military practice against our state, the end of which is not yet visible in the near future. The military-theoretical and political response was the "Military Strategy of Ukraine" in 2021, which "opened" a new generation of paradigms of militarypolitical thinking. The main thesis is the belief that the protection of sovereignty and strengthening of military security is the military-theoretical and political response was the "Military Strategy of Ukraine" in 2021, which "opened" a new generation of paradigms of military-political thinking. The main thesis is the belief that the protection of sovereignty and strengthening of military security is the creation of a "comprehensive defence system" with the integration of all forces of the state and civil society, law enforcement agencies and volunteers, administrative regions and territorial communities. The military-theoretical and political response was the "Military Strategy of Ukraine" in 2021, which "opened" a new generation of paradigms of military-political thinking. We will prove that this is a philosophy of military security instead of the previously expressed doctrinal military-political ideas of entrusting a matter of national importance to the forces of the defence sector. The new generation of public life Ukraine will begin with a new paradigm of militarypolitical thinking, the central idea of which is the transition from hopes for the political levers of defence for international cooperation to the creation of a system of comprehensive national security with the synergistic potential of Ukrainianity.

As gaming technology for personal computers has advanced over the last two decades, the text-adventures that predominated in the 1980s ceased to be commercially viable. However, the easy availability of powerful authoring systems developed by enthusiasts and distributed free over the Internet has led to a renaissance in text-adventures, now called “Interactive Fiction.” The educational potential in playing these text-based games and simulations was recognised when they were first popular; the new authoring systems now allow educators to explore the educational potential of creating these works. The authors present here a case-study using the ADRIFT authoring system to create a work of interactive fiction in a split grade 4/5 class (9 and 10 year-olds) in Quebec. They find that the process of creating the game helped improve literary and social skills amongst the students.

The results of calculation and theoretical investigation for the creation of a powerful (≈600 MW) pulsed MHD generator on the combustion products from solid (powder) plasma-forming fuel “Start-2” of a new generation are presented. The scheme, methods, results of calculations, and optimization of characteristics of the pulsed MHD generator with the self-excited resistive “iron-free” magnetic system are described. The local, integral, and specific energy and mass-dimensional characteristics are determined. The obtained characteristics are 1.5-2 times higher than those of the first generation MHD generator.

The specific conditions peculiar to the Northern regions create a number of difficulties in the functioning of the information airfield structure based on the traditional complex of navigation aids. These difficulties are caused by the unstable operation of satellite navigation systems in the Arctic region and territorial fragmentation. There is an urgent need to develop new approaches and technical means for the deployment of local navigation systems that ensure the operation of airfields with low traffic and difficult flight conditions. The aim of the study is to develop approaches to the creation of a new generation of multifunctional radar systems for the organization of a local navigation and information system at the airfields of the Arctic region, consisting of a ground-based multifunctional station, a portable small-sized terminal installed on board the aircraft and a board-to-ground communication line. This article proposes a promising navigation and territorial system for Arctic airfields, based on a new generation of information tools, including multifunctional radar stations. The proposed local territorial navigation and system is based on the information of the ground-based multifunctional airfield control radar. The information is transmitted to a portable small-sized terminal installed on board the aircraft. In this system, when transmitting the current situation to the on-board terminal from the multifunctional radar, which is linked to the airfield control center, it provides a safer implementation of the approach and landing modes at Arctic airfields, including in the complete absence of satellite navigation. The implementation of the proposed principles and technical solutions will enable the creation of a new generation of technical tools and the introduction of new organizational approaches to the creation of local navigation systems.

Our economies and societies are changing, with significant effects on each individual, as they have to cope with increasingly complex and unpredictable working lives. Therefore, innovative digital learning applications that respond to their end user's needs and desires become inevitable. Whilst relying on user-centered design structures, the participatory design methodology provides a promising approach towards the creation of such a new generation of digital learning applications. After thoroughly outlining the research undertaking's rationale and following to a theoretical discussion, the author gives insights into the results of problem-centered interviews with digital learning and user experience experts that build the basis for the creation for a prototypical participatory design process. These findings primarily confirm the recent literature and provide, complemented by the created process, a sound basis for further theory-oriented, scientific discussions but application in practice as well.

We describe a multimedia-based Russian-language course at Colgate and a multimedia authoring system that makes the creation of such courses technically feasible for language instructors. The system uses high-level visual tools to integrate the various media components of the educational unit and to establish links between them. Although designed with language instruction in mind, the system can be used for creating educational materials in any domain, as long as they consist of video/animation clips (or other linear sequences), accompanying texts, glossaries, and hypertext/hypermedia commentaries.
