BACKGROUND Health-related data being collected by smartphones offer a promising complementary approach to in-clinic assessments. OBJECTIVE Here we introduce the JuTrack platform as a secure, reliable and extendable open-source solution for remote monitoring in daily-life and digital phenotyping. METHODS JuTrack consists of an Android-based smartphone application and a web-based project management dashboard. A wide range of anonymized measurements from motion-sensors, social and physical activities and geolocation information can be collected in either active or passive modes. The dashboard also provides management tools to monitor and manage data collection across studies. To facilitate scaling, reproducibility, data management and sharing we integrated DataLad as a data management infrastructure. JuTrack was developed to comply with security, privacy and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements. RESULTS JuTrack is an open-source (released under open-source Apache 2.0 licenses) platform for remote assessment of digital biomarkers (DB) in neurological, psychiatric and other indications. The main components of the JuTrack platform and examples of data being collected using JuTrack are presented here. CONCLUSIONS Smartphone-based Digital Biomarker data may provide valuable insight into daily life behaviour in health and disease. JuTrack provides an easy and reliable open-source solution for collection of such data.

Summary Objective: To give an overview of the role of Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) in the context of secondary use of patient data to enable Learning Health Systems (LHSs). Methods: We conducted an environmental scan of the academic and grey literature utilising the MedFLOSS database of open source systems in healthcare to inform a discussion of the role of open source in developing LHSs that reuse patient data for research and quality improvement. Results: A wide range of FLOSS is identified that contributes to the information technology (IT) infrastructure of LHSs including operating systems, databases, frameworks, interoperability software, and mobile and web apps. The recent literature around the development and use of key clinical data management tools is also reviewed. Conclusions: FLOSS already plays a critical role in modern health IT infrastructure for the collection, storage, and analysis of patient data. The nature of FLOSS systems to be collaborative, modular, and modifiable may make open source approaches appropriate for building the digital infrastructure for a LHS.

To date, the processing of wildlife location data has relied on a diversity of software and file formats. Data management and the following spatial and statistical analyses were undertaken in multiple steps, involving many time-consuming importing/exporting phases. Recent technological advancements in tracking systems have made large, continuous, high-frequency datasets of wildlife behavioural data available, such as those derived from the global positioning system (GPS) and other animal-attached sensor devices. These data can be further complemented by a wide range of other information about the animals' environment. Management of these large and diverse datasets for modelling animal behaviour and ecology can prove challenging, slowing down analysis and increasing the probability of mistakes in data handling. We address these issues by critically evaluating the requirements for good management of GPS data for wildlife biology. We highlight that dedicated data management tools and expertise are needed. We explore current research in wildlife data management. We suggest a general direction of development, based on a modular software architecture with a spatial database at its core, where interoperability, data model design and integration with remote-sensing data sources play an important role in successful GPS data handling.

Abstract In older adults, assessment of standing postural control under various task and/or environmental conditions provides valuable insight into cognitive-motor function. To date, however, such assessments have been limited primarily to laboratory or clinical settings. We therefore created a smartphone App to enable remote assessments of postural control. This App provides users with standardized multi-media instructions and harnesses the phone’s internal motion sensors to capture postural sway, with the phone placed in the user’s pants pocket, during trials of standing with eyes open, eyes-closed, and while performing serial-subtractions (i.e., dual tasking). We then established the test-retest reliability of several metrics of postural sway derived from this assessment tool, as well as their sensitivity to the effect of age and standing condition. Fifteen healthy younger and 15 older adults completed multiple standing trials in two separate laboratory visits and on three separate days in their own homes. Postural sway metrics included the mean distance from the center of the trajectory and root mean square were derived from both transverse-plane acceleration and angular velocity time series. Each sway metric demonstrated excellent test-retest reliability, even when analyzed separately by group and standing condition (ICCs: 0.78-0.89). Moreover, each metric was sensitive to age group and standing condition, such that greater sway was observed in older adults as compared to younger adults (p<0.03), and in more challenging standing conditions (p<0.0001). These results suggest that sensitive metrics of standing postural control may be reliably obtained from remote smartphone-based assessments in both younger and older adults.

Interest in land-use changes (LUC) research has been growing rapidly in recent years. This topic has already become the subject of a separate scientific discipline – land use science (or land change science). In order to formulate relevant future policy and develop appropriate land-use management tools, it is crucial to know how the LUC шьзфсе the environment and society condition. For Ukraine, where the structure of land use and the system of land resources management have significantly changed during the years of post-socialist transformation of land relations, the study of the LUC on a modern methodological basis is especially actual. The paper, based on a critical analysis of publications in leading international journals over the last thirty years, identifies key directions of LUC studies and analyzes their methodological features. There is a significant increase of the number of works based on the results of meta-studies and the use of a wide range of methods for modeling the LUC processes, their causes and possible consequences. The great "synergistic potential" of integration of the selected directions is noted, which makes it possible to accelerate the development of the general theory of land use and increase its use efficiency in substantiation of management decisions in the sphere of land use and modernization of the mechanisms of state land, spatial and ecological policies with consideration of existing and potential globalizing challenges. In this context, the key role of the land use integrated planning methodology at regional and local levels is emphasized. This methodology would require close cooperation between government, business and the public in developing a common vision for the implementation of specific land use plans and projects based on the principles of subsidiarity, participativity and shared responsibility.

The main goal of this book is to provide an understanding of what is commonly referred to as “the risk-based approach to data protection”. An expression that came to the fore during the overhaul process of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)—even though it can also be found in other statutes under different acceptations. At its core it consists in endowing the regulated organisation that process personal data with increased responsibility for complying with data protection mandates. Such increased compliance duties are performed through risk management tools. It addresses this topic from various perspectives. In framing the risk-based approach as the latest model of a series of regulation models, the book provides an analysis of data protection law from the perspective of regulation theory as well as risk and risk management literatures, and their mutual interlinkages. Further, it provides an overview of the policy developments that led to the adoption of such an approach, which it discusses in the light of regulation theory. It also includes various discussions pertaining to the risk-based approach’s scope and meaning, to the way it has been uptaken in statutes including key provisions such as accountability and data protection impact assessments, or to its potential and limitations. Finally, it analyses how the risk-based approach can be implemented in practice by providing technical analyses of various data protection risk management methodologies.
