Abstract Community groups who live in traditional settlements mostly have a wealth called genius loci, which actually has very insight into the preservation of the natural and cultural environment. Bali also has several unique traditions that are not only in terms of settlement layouts, but are unique in terms of preserving the natural landscape. Meanwhile, there are some areas in Indonesia that are not able to maintain environmental sustainability, which is indicated by the continued increase in deforestation rates which are a sign of the deteriorating quality of the surrounding environment. Based on this, this article discusses the traditions applied in landscape conservation in Penglipuran Bangli village. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. To preserve the natural environment, there are several traditions that are still maintained and implemented consistently, including traditions: Preserving village forests, keeping the environment clean, telajakan karang kerti, may not use vehicles on the main village corridor. The application of local traditions related to environmental preservation is carried out consistently and with full awareness by both the community and the prajuru as leaders in the Penglipuran Traditional Village. The success of nature conservation cannot be separated from the clear, firm, consistent application of awig-awig accompanied by sanctions, as well as public awareness of the importance of landscape conservation.

Over generations, economic development has accelerated traditional settlements in Taiwan while losing traditional culture. In Hakka villages, this is manifested in the changes in defensive spaces, the ‘spirit of place,’ and land use. Although some progress has been made through research into related issues, a correlated view has been missing. To explore the connection between the ‘spirit of place’ and defensive spaces in Wugoushui, a traditional representative settlement in Taiwan, this paper probes three questions: What are the changes in defensive spaces? What are the changes in the spirit of place? What are the connections between them? Taking the sixteen criteria of secure defensive space as the theoretical foundation, through more than a year of structured observations and in-depth interviews with ten representative residents, and based on context analysis and site analysis of the information collected, this paper has concluded that, although the actual functionality of Wugoushui settlement’s spiritual, behavioural, and physical defences have disappeared, cultural characteristics related to the settlement traditions, including religious beliefs, trust, sense of belonging, street network, nodes, institutions, territory, and social networks, constitute a concrete manifestation of the defensive space and the spirit of place as of today. This research contributes to developing a theory of the relevance of the spirit of place to the defensive space of settlements from a sustainability perspective and improving the cultural preservation and land management of traditional settlements.

Malaria is a serious infection affecting millions of people in Africa. Our study investigated the personal preferences and applications of antimalarial medicines in Ghana. Based on over 1000 questionnaires distributed in Ghana from January to May 2019, we noticed that although Western medications to fight this disease are widely available, most patients in Ghana prefer treatment with locally produced herbal remedies. This preference appears to be due to a combination of traditional venues for obtaining medicines “on the street” rather than in licensed pharmacies, trust in local and “green” products, extensive advertisement of such local products, and an inherent distrust of imported and synthetic or unnatural medicines. Going local and natural is a trend also observed in other countries across the globe, and adds to the acceptance or rejection of drugs regardless of their activity or toxicity. In fact, adverse side effects associated with herbal remedies, such as general weakness and swollen, sore mouth, do not seem to deter the respondents of this study in Ghana. We propose a combination of (a) increasing public awareness of the benefits of modern medicine and (b) an improvement and control of the quality of herbal remedies to raise the standard of malaria treatment in countries such as Ghana.
