Ovarian cancer is a lethal disease. One of the problems faced by patients with ovarian cancer is the lack of symptoms in its early stages, which results in it only being detected when it is at an advanced stage. Therefore, there is an urgent need for biomarkers that can predict ovarian cancer precisely. The purpose of this study was to determine the expression of microRNA-21 as a predictive biomarker candidate in both early- and advanced-stage ovarian cancer. This was a cross-sectional study using the blood plasma of 21 healthy control subjects and 37 blood plasma samples from patients with ovarian cancer. Blood plasmas were collected, from which the RNA was isolated. Based on the RNA, the cDNA was synthesized and run through qPCR, the results of which were analyzed using the Livak method. The results showed an upregulation of microRNA-21 in the advanced stage by 2.14 fold compared with the early stage, and 6.13 fold compared with the healthy controls (p < 0.05). The upregulation of microRNA-21 in early-stage ovarian cancer was 2.86 fold compared with the healthy control subjects (p < 0.05). In addition, there was an increase in the expression of microRNA-21 in ovarian cancer by 4.14 fold compared with the healthy controls (p < 0.05). Based on these results, it can be concluded that the expression of microRNA 21 upregulated with the severity of the disease.

Objective: To determine the expression of Phosphatase Regenerating Liver-3 (PRL-3) and E-Cadherin in the epithelial ovarian cancer on various stages and differentiation grades. Method: This was a cross-sectional study design conducted at Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of several teaching hospitals, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Hasanuddin from January to June 2015. The expression of PRL-3 and E-cadherin was assessed immunohistochemically in 40 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer including 15 patients in early stage and 25 patients in advanced stage. We used the Fisher’s exact test with the significance of p0.05). The significant difference was found in the expression of E-cadherin whereas the high expression was shown at early stage than advanced stage (p0.05). This study also pointed out no correlation between the expression of PRL-3 and E-cadherin in epithelial ovarian cancer (p>0.05). Conclusion: PRL-3 overexpression does not decrease E-cadherin expression in epithelial ovarian cancer. Keywords: E-cadherin, epithelial ovarian cancer, PRL-3

Abstract Context Sclerostin is an inhibitor of Wnt-β-catenin signaling to regulate bone formation. Circulating sclerostin levels were reported to be elevated in patients with X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH), and sclerostin antibody (Scl-Ab) has been shown to increase bone mass and normalize circulating phosphate levels in Hyp mice. However, circulating sclerostin level in acquired hypophosphatemic patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) remains rare reported. Objectives This study was designed to evaluate serum sclerostin levels in TIO patients comparing them with age-, sex- matched healthy controls and XLH patients, and analyze correlation of circulating sclerostin with BMD and laboratory parameters. Design, Setting and Participants 190 individuals including 83 adult TIO patients, 83 adult healthy controls and 24 adult XLH patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Main outcome measures Serum sclerostin levels were determined in TIO patients, healthy controls and XLH patients. Results TIO patients (43 male and 40 female) aged 44.3 ± 8.7 (mean ± SD) years had lower levels of circulating sclerostin than healthy controls (94.2 ± 45.8 vs 108.4 ± 42.3 pg/mL, p = 0.01) with adjustment for age, gender, BMI and diabetes rate. Sclerostin levels were positively associated with age (r = 0.238, p = 0.030). Male patients had higher sclerostin level than female patients (104.7 ± 47.3 vs 83.0 ± 41.8 pg/mL, p = 0.014) and postmenopausal patients had higher tendency of sclerostin level than premenopausal patients (98.4 ± 48.8 vs 71.6 ± 32.3 ng/ml, p = 0.05). Sclerostin levels were positively associated with BMD of L1-4 (r = 0.255, p = 0.028), femoral neck (r = 0.242, p = 0.039) and serum calcium (r = 0.231, p = 0.043). TIO subgroup patients (n=24, 35.9 ± 7.3 years old) comparing with age-, sex-matched adult XLH patients and healthy controls revealed significant difference of sclerostin levels (XLH, TIO and healthy control were 132.0 ± 68.8, 68.4 ± 31.3 and 98.6 ± 41.1 pg/mL, respectively, p &lt; 0.001). Conclusions Circulating sclerostin levels were decreased in TIO patients but increased in XLH patients, which might be result of histological abnormality and bone mass.

Background Psychosocial variables are key factors influencing psycho-physical equilibrium in migraine patients. Social isolation and vulnerability to stressors may prevent efficient psychological adjustment negatively affecting adaptation to life changes, as that imposed during Covid-19 lockdown. Here, we explored psychosocial dimensions and changes in clinical condition during Covid-19 lockdown in migraine patients, with regard to migraine type and headache impact. Methods Sixty-four migraine patients (32 episodic and 32 chronic) and 64 healthy control subjects were included in a case-control cross-sectional study. A two-step clustering procedure split patients into two clusters, based on the Headache Impact Test. Perceived global distress, loneliness, empathy, and coping levels were compared in groups, as well as changes in clinical condition. Results Migraine patients reported higher general loneliness and lower social support compared to healthy control subjects. Emotional loneliness was more marked in patients with higher headache impact. This subgroup of patients more frequently reported changes in the therapeutic and care paths as the perceived cause of the occurrence of motor or extra-motor symptomatology. Conclusions Migraine patients, especially those more severely affected, proved more vulnerable than healthy control subjects to Covid-19 lockdown. Long-lasting interruption of social interactions may be detrimental in fragile patients that are in need of structured support interventions to maintain psycho-physical wellbeing.

Background Headache is an adverse event of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination. Whether patients with history of headache suffer more from vaccination-induced headaches is unknown. We aimed to uncover if headache patients develop more headaches after COVID-19 mRNA vaccination than healthy controls. Methods We performed a questionnaire survey for nursing staff in our hospital from April to May 2021. Based on baseline characteristics, we divided the participants into migraine, non-migrainous headache, and healthy control, and examined the occurrence and features of headache after COVID-19 vaccinations. Results We included 171 participants (15.2% migraine and 24.6% non-migrainous headache). Headache incidence after vaccinations was significantly higher in the migraine (69.2%) and non-migrainous headache (71.4%) groups than in the healthy control (37.9%) group. The incidence of headaches was significantly higher after the second dose compared to the first (45.6% vs. 20.5%). Conclusion Migraineurs and non-migrainous headache participants developed more headaches compared to the healthy controls after COVID-19 vaccination.

Background: Cytokines that stimulate thrombopoiesis are often elevated in cancer, and as a result, various cancers have been associated with thrombocytosis. In addition thrombocytosis has been found to be an adverse prognostic factor in many types of common cancers.Methods: A cross sectional study was designed to evaluate the factors associated with prognosis of the cases of carcinoma cervix in the Department of Gyne-Oncology, GMCH, Aurangabad from August 2016 to August 2017. Variables analysed were the sociodemographic details, literacy level, symptoms, duration, stage of the disease at diagnosis, pretreatment platelet counts were noted.Results: 85% patients were having squamous cell carcinoma, 6 % patients were having adenocarcinoma and 9% patients had adenosuamous carcinoma. 29% patients have platelet count less than 3 lakhs and 18 patients has tumour less than 4 cm.  71 % patients have platelet count more than 3 lakhs, only 6% patients belonged to early stage and 65% belonged to late stage of cancer cervix.Conclusions: Seventy one percent of the cases had platetlet count >3 lakh, of which only 6% were in early stage of disease, whereas 65% belonged to late stage of the disease. All the patients with tumour size of >4 cm had platelet count more than 3 lakh, this shows strong association of platelet count with tumour size >4 cm and advanced stage of the disease. This can be used as independent prognostic factor for prognosis of cancer cervix.

Objective: Studies regarding omentectomy on epithelialovarian cancer are scarce with conflicting results; this study isaimed to investigate the prevalence of occult metastases inpatients with epithelial ovarian cancer of the omentum.Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used by evaluating themedical records of surgically staged ovarian cancer patients in Dr.Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia during the periodof January 2009 to December 2015.Results: A total of 51 subjects were involved in this study. One(2%) of 51 subjects was found to have occult metastases in theomentum. The prevalence of metastases of early stage epithelialovarian cancer in 2009-2015 is 33.3% (17 out of 51 subjects),whereas the omental involvement is found only in 2% subjects(1 out of 51).Conclusion: The prevalence of occult metastases of early stageepithelial ovarian cancer in Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital,Jakarta, Indonesia, from 2009-2015 in 2% (1/51 subjects).[Indones J Obstet Gynecol 2018; 6-2: 119-122]Keywords: cancer, epithelial, metastases, omentum, ovarian cancer,ovary, prevalence

Background: Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is a lethal disease due to late diagnosis and lack of effective screening methods. MicroRNA (miR/miRNA) plays an important role in ovarian carcinogenesis and may serve as a non-invasive biomarker for EOC. This study aimed to assess miR-141 expression in the blood plasma of patients with EOC and healthy subjects and determine its association with the clinical stage of EOC. Methods: This cross-sectional study used blood plasma from 30 newly diagnosed untreated patients with EOC and 25 healthy subjects. The mean age was 47.73 (SD = 10.29) years for EOC and 44.48 (SD = 16.14) years for healthy subject. The total RNA was isolated from blood plasma and reversed transcribed to obtain cDNA. The expression of miR-141 was measured by real- time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and calculated using 2-∆∆Ct methods. The data were analysed using Mann-Whitney test. Results: The expression of miR-141 was upregulated 8.41 fold in the blood plasma of EOC patients compared to healthy controls (P < 0.001). Expression of miR-141 in the advanced stage was upregulated 4.2 fold compared to the early stage (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The miR-141 was upregulated in the blood plasma of EOC and associated with an advanced stage of disease, suggesting it has potential as a biomarker for EOC detection.

Background. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is the main cause of morbimortality in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Increased Eng expression has been demonstrated in SSc patients.Objective. Ascertaining serum levels of Eng in SSc patients with and without elevated systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (sPAP) and comparing them with that of healthy volunteers.Methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out. A commercial ELISA kit was used for measuring serum concentrations of Eng in 60 subjects: 40 patients with SSc with and without elevated sPAP, compared to 20 healthy control subjects. Elevated sPAP was detected by echocardiogram.Results. No association between positive Eng and elevated sPAP was found when compared to the SSc without elevated sPAP group (OR=2.85; 0.65–12.88 95% CI;P=.11); however, an association was found between positive Eng and elevated sPAP compared to healthy controls (OR=23.22; 2.46–1050.33 95% CI;P=.001), and weak association was found between the positive Eng with SSc without elevated sPAP group compared to healthy controls (OR=8.14, 0.8–393.74 95% CI;P=.046).Conclusion. Raised serum levels of Eng in SSc patients compared to healthy controls were found, suggesting a role for Eng in SSc vasculopathy and not just in elevated sPAP. However, prospective studies are needed to verify such observations.

Objective: Although Protein Energy Malnutrition (PEM) has been studied extensively; the best criteria for its detection in early stages have not been established. This study was carried out to observe the change in transaminases, alkaline phosphatase levels when compared with control and also to see their relationships with various grades of PEM. Then to see if certain biochemical parameters could be used to detect malnutrition in early stage. Methods: Cross sectional study between Jan 1999-Dec 2000,124 children from 5 months to 5 years were included in the study. Out of 124 children 98 (79%) were cases and 26 (21%) normal age matched healthy controls. Cases were divided into groups as per Gomez classification (Group 1-Grade I PEM, 37;Group 2- Grade II PEM, 34; Group 3- Grade III PEM27; and Group 4 26 Healthy controls). Three serum enzymes, Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) was analyzed and for statistical analysis student's "t" test was used.
