Turmeric essential oil is known to have antioxidant activity. Various in vitro antioxidantactivity assays has been carried out. Related to this research, it tries to examine the antioxidantpotential of turmeric essential oil and see the composition that is responsible for antioxidant activitycombine with chemometrics. The research method used was a narrative review of 60 articlesobtained from several databases. The review conducted on profiling essential oil compounds thatidentified using GC-MS and evaluation of the antioxidant activity of turmeric essential oil with themost commonly used method including scavenging radical 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)and 2,2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6 sulfonic acid (ABTS). Analysis methods used forgrouping various multivariate data subjects and determaining the relationship between thevariables were Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis (CA). According to thereview, turmeric essential oils are proven to have potential antioxidant activity and have variationsin chemical contents. PCA was success for grouping subjects with various correlated variables,determining variables wich the most influential and correlation between variables. CA method canbe used to group samples without requiring mutually correlated variables.

Background: Curcumin, as the substantial constituent of the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa), plays a significant role in the prevention of various diseases, including diabetes. It possesses ideal structure features as enzyme inhibitor, including a flexible backbone, hydrophobic nature, and several available hydrogen bond (H-bond) donors and acceptors. Objective: The present study aimed at synthesizing several novel curcumin derivatives and further evaluation of these compounds for possible antioxidant and anti-diabetic properties along with inhibitory effect against two carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes, α-amylase and α-glucosidase, as these enzymes are therapeutic targets for attenuation of postprandial hyperglycemia. Methods: Therefore, curcumin-based pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives were synthesized and identified using an instrumental technique like NMR spectroscopy and then screened for antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory potential. Total antioxidant activity, reducing power assay and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH• ) radical scavenging activity were done to appraisal the antioxidant potential of these compounds in vitro. Results: Compounds L6-L9 showed higher antioxidant activity while L4, L9, L12 and especially L8 exhibited the best selectivity index (lowest α-amylase/α-glucosidase inhibition ratio). Conclusion: These antioxidant inhibitors may be potential anti-diabetic drugs, not only to reduce glycemic index but also to limit the activity of the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) producing pathways.

The investigation aimed to study the in vitro and in silico antioxidant properties of Melissa officinalis subsp. officinalis essential oil (MOEO). The chemical composition of MOEO was determined using GC–MS analysis. Among 36 compounds identified in MOEO, the main were beta-cubebene (27.66%), beta-caryophyllene (27.41%), alpha-cadinene (4.72%), caryophyllene oxide (4.09%), and alpha-cadinol (4.07%), respectively. In vitro antioxidant properties of MOEO have been studied in 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical scavenging, and inhibition of β-carotene bleaching assays. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) for the radical scavenging abilities of ABTS and DPPH were 1.225 ± 0.011 μg/mL and 14.015 ± 0.027 μg/mL, respectively, demonstrating good antioxidant activity. Moreover, MOEO exhibited a strong inhibitory effect (94.031 ± 0.082%) in the β-carotene bleaching assay by neutralizing hydroperoxides, responsible for the oxidation of highly unsaturated β-carotene. Furthermore, molecular docking showed that the MOEO components could exert an in vitro antioxidant activity through xanthine oxidoreductase inhibition. The most active structures are minor MOEO components (approximately 6%), among which the highest affinity for the target protein belongs to carvacrol.

This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro growth and biochemical activity of Curcuma longa explants using different MS medium formulations and growth regulators. In all the experiments, plants were grown in MS medium supplemented with agar (6.5 g L-1) and pH adjusted to 5.8. In the first assay, the MS culture medium at 70% strength, supplemented with 30 g L-1 of sucrose, and without the addition of activated carbon, resulted in the highest number of shoots. The sucrose concentration of 60 g L-1, combined with the addition of actived charcoalin half-strength MS medium, resulted in the increased root dry mass, root collar diameter, and relative chlorophyll index. In the second assay, the highest root collar diameter and dry matter of shoots and roots were found in the MS medium supplemented with 4.44 BAP, 0.46 KIN, and 1.08 NAA. The MS medium with 8.88 BAP, 0.92 KIN, and 2.16 μM NAA resulted in the highest number of shoots (7.75), number of leaves (35), and shoot length (88.57 mm). The antioxidant activity was significantly higher in the treatments that resulted in better plantlets growth performance, demonstrating that the antioxidant activity is related to other factors such as a possible role of growth regulators on the elicitation of compounds in plants. Superoxide dismutase had a high enzymatic activity in both assays, whereas the enzymatic activity of catalase and ascorbate peroxidase was dependent on the culture media used.

The purpose of the present work was to evaluate the vegetative growth of Mentha piperita L. cultivated under different water availability, as well its influence in content, chemical composition and in vitro antioxidant activity of its essential oil. Plants were propagated by mother plants microcutting and scions were transplanted to 5 L pots with soil and cattle manure. Afterward, were kept at field capacity for 30 days and under treatment for 40 days. It was treated with different levels of water deficit treatments: (T1): 100 of field capacity (FC); (T2): 80 of FC; (T3): 60 of FC; (T4) 40 of FC with 5 blocks. Vegetative growth was evaluated by dry matter contents of all part of plants and by root/aerial rate. The essential oil of the leaves was extracted by hydrodistillation, analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS and in vitro antioxidant potential was evaluated. A significant decrease in the dry matter of leaves and stems accompanied with a decrease in the roots dry matter was observed with an increase in the water stress. Quantitative chemical differences were observed in the chemical composition of the essential oil, according water availability. Total antioxidant activity showed a gradual increase as water stress progressed.

In the present study, we have evaluated the antitumour and anticarcinogenic activity of turmeric essential oil in vivo. Turmeric essential oil was found to have significant in vitro cytotoxic activity against Dalton’s lymphoma ascites cells (DLA) and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cancer cell lines. Concentration needed for 50% cytotoxicity (IC50) was 8 μg for DLA cells and 18 μg to EAC cell lines. Oral administration of turmeric essential oil was found to significantly increase the life span (56.25%) of Dalton’s Lymphoma Ascites (DLA) induced ascites tumour bearing mice as well as significantly reduced (P<0.001) the solid tumours. 3-Methyl cholanthrene induced sarcoma development was also delayed and there was significant increase in the life span of mice after oral administration of turmeric essential oil. Moreover, turmeric essential oil significantly (P<0.001) inhibited phenobarbitone induced cytochrome p450 enzyme activity in rats.

Coleonema album, a member of the South African ‘Fynbos’ biome, was evaluated for its antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity. Ethanol- and acetone-based extracts from plant material obtained from two different geographical areas were analysed. A bioassay-guided fractionation methodology was followed for screening of active compounds. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)-TLC method revealed the presence of a number of antioxidants which were quantified by the DPPH-spectrophotometric assay and the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay. The C. album extracts possessed significant in vitro antioxidant activity, a large portion of which appeared to be contributed by the phenolic compounds. In contrast, the reducing power of the extracts could not be correlated with the observed antioxidant activity. Identification and structural information of the active components were obtained by a combination of preparative TLC and LC-MS which revealed the presence of coumarin aglycones and glycosides. The results of this study indicate that C. album contains strong antioxidants that warrant further investigation into the relationship between the structure and activity of the active coumarin metabolites.
