England’s Victorian period is marked as an era of historical, technological, economic, and social change. Although science and technological advancement was very progressive—denoted by the Industrial Revolution which took place in this era—the Victorian society’s ideal of moral values, norms, and beliefs was very conservative. Robert Louis Stevenson, a famous Victorian author, wrote The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde which portrays the complexity of Victorian upper class lives in dealing with the development of science yet facing the strict social norms. This research applies a sociological approach to examine the significant relations between the characterization of the three main characters in the novel—Jekyll, Hyde, and Utterson—and the social issues in the Victorian era. A library research as well as a qualitative method is applied in the process of collecting and analyzing the data. It was found that both Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde symbolize the repressed individuals of Victorian social norms as Jekyll suppresses his inner-self and separates his dual personality apart in the form of Edward Hyde. As the representation of Jekyll’s evil side, Hyde performs violent and criminal acts which oppose the ideal of social morality. It can be concluded that Jekyll-Hyde’s characterization articulates the social criticism against the firm gentlemen image in the Victorian era. In contrast, Utterson’s characterization represents the epitome of Victorian gentleman.

This article discusses the identity of the main characters; Rehana, Leela, and Usha  in Lipstick Under My Burkha film released in 2017. The main objectives of this research are to explore how four major characters negotiate the desire of their lives with the patriarchy and social norms that they should obey. This study employs qualitative research method with a cultural approach using the technique of library research. The text is analyzed by using identity theory by Stuart Hall to interpret how women reach their freedom in life. This study not only analyzes the characters of women who wear a burkha but also analyzes all of the four major characters in this film because the main point of this film is about women's dream that cannot be conveyed. The result shows that the four women characters in this film are trying to reach their dream; freedom for woman. Freedom to dress as she wishes refers to Rehana, a freedom to be loved refers to Shireen, freedom to choose a life partner refers to Leela and freedom to do what they want refers to Usha. The attitude and behavior of the four major characters in this film are limited by the patriarchy (manpower) and the social norms. The patriarchy in this film refers to Rehana and Shireen’s life because there are men power represented by the father figure in Rehana’s life and husband figure in Shireen's life. Then, the social norms appear in Leela and Usha’s lifeasboth of them do immoral acts and make them feel ashame.

Global Mental Health is a field of research and practice that addresses the expansion of universal and equitable mental health care worldwide. This article explores the ways the concept of culture is employed in Global Mental Health literature. Global Mental Health advocates and critics assume an ontological separation between ‘nature’ and ‘culture’ to typify mental illness, linking it predominantly to one or the other of these two categories. Advocates of Global Mental Health view mental disorders as a nature–culture hybrid, while critics see them as typically cultural phenomena. The cultural critique of Global Mental Health can be strengthened by a sociological approach to both the role of critique and the uses of the concept of culture within social sciences. As an alternative to the ontologization of culture, we propose a different theoretical approach to the social issues involved in the expansion of international public health care in mental health: Arthur Kleinman's and Didier Fassin’s moral anthropological approaches.

This study is aimed to present the nature of gentleman in the Regency era as reflected in the selected novels of Jane Austen, entitled Pride and Prejudice and Emma. The men who are categorized as gentleman are shifted over the years. In the time before Industrial Revolution, the term “gentleman” belongs to nobility class, gentry or to men who did not use their own hands to work. However, after the Victorian era, the “gentleman” covers several terms. These are the army, clergy, and even for the merchants. The social class and wealth are the prominent factors that cause the changing of this pattern. Nevertheless, Austen’s concept of gentleman in her two novels is referred mostly by the virtue and behavior.

Digitalization and technological advancement, referred to as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0), results not only in technological innovation but also in the changes in society and public awareness. One such tendency is the demographic aging, which implicates two concerns: the instability of the public pension systems and the social awareness related with the risk of major reduction of benefits in contrast to the expectations and the need for the additional private pension security. The research has aimed to identify the opinions and attitudes of the students from Poland and Ukraine in respect to the broadly understood issues of the old age security, as well as to recognize the prospective differences in this field between the researched populations. The relevant research was conducted using the PAPI method in the years 2018–2019. Within the framework of the research, nine specific hypotheses were presented concerning the attitudes towards the selected aspects of the pension schemes and old-age security. The results were compiled in the form of the semantic differential, and the Mann-Whitney U test was utilized to verify the significance of the differences in the distribution of the answers given by the students. Those served as the basis for formulating the conclusions regarding similarities and differences in the opinions expressed by young people studied populations. Rabindranath Tagore, the prominent voice of the Indian Renaissance skilfully presented the conflicts of spirituality, marginality and liberation in the form of a dance drama Chandalika. The play depicts the class consciousness and desire of a marginalised woman to liberate her inner self. She passionately yearns to challenge the social norms and rebel against the discriminations in society. The paper proposes to locate the conflicts, sense of liberation and marginalisation from the psyche of an ostracised woman Prakriti, in Chandalika. The study also focuses on the socio-cultural impulses of the playwright and the plight of a woman to break the social obstacle of marginality. The play tends the readers and the audience to rethink the idea of equality and liberation. The marginalised experience, differences are shown based on caste, gender bias and other conflicts are raised as an aesthetic exploration in the play. It questions the existing belief of caste and marginality. Tagore is imaginative and modernistic in the presentation of the play. The sequences in the play are depicted through dance. Dance in the play is a powerful symbol. Emotions, conflicts, struggles and dialogues are articulated in its true form with the help of the dance. The playwright further amalgamates the internal, spiritual conflicts of liberation against the social hegemony in the play Chandalika
