Abstract: Compressive strength of concrete is the capacity of concrete to bear loads of materials or structure sans breaking or being deformed. Specimen under compression shrinks in size whilst under tension the size elongates. Compressive strength essentially gives concept about the properties of concrete. Compressive strength relies on many aspects such as water-cement ratio, strength of cement, calidad of concrete material. Specimens are tested by compression testing machine after the span of 7 or 28 days of curing. Compressive strength of the concrete is designated by the load on the area of specimen. In this research various proportions of such aggregate mixed in preparing M 30 grade and M 40 grade of Concrete mix and the effect is studied on its compressive strength . Several research papers have been assessed to analyze the compressive strength of concrete and the effect of different zones of sand on compressive strength are discussed in this paper. Keywords: Sand, Gradation, Coarse aggregate, Compressive strength

This study examined the effect of varying water cement ratio on the compressive strength of concrete produced using palm kernel shell (PKS) as coarse aggregate at different replacement levels. The replacement levels of coarse aggregate with palm kernel shells (PKS) were 0%, 25%, 50%, and 100% respectively. PKS concrete cubes (144 specimens) of sizes 150mm x 150mm x 150mm were cast and cured in water for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days respectively. A mix ratio of 1:2:4 was adopted with water-cement ratio of 0.45, 0.5, and 0.6 respectively while the batching was done by weight. Slump test was conducted on fresh concrete while compressive strength test was carried out on the hardened concrete cubes using a compression testing machine of 2000kN capacity. The result of tests on fresh concrete shows that the slump height of 0.45 water cement ratio (w/c) increases with an increase in PKS%. This trend was similar to 0.50 and 0.60 w/c. However, the compressive strength of concrete cube decreases with an increase in w/c (from 0.45 to 0.60) but increases with respect to curing age and also decreases with increase in PKS%. Concrete with 0.45 water-cement ratio possess the highest compressive strength. It was observed that PKS is not a good substitute for coarse aggregate in mix ratio 1:2:4 for concrete productions. Hence, the study suggest the use of chemical admixture such as superplasticizer or calcium chloride in order to improve the strength of palm kernel shells-concrete.

This paper presents the main results of the research carried out to analyse the mechanical properties of concrete incorporating with eggshells waste. The use of eggshells ash in concrete formulations was investigated as an alternative to landfill disposal. The objective of this study is to find the suitability of eggshells ash as cement replacement in concrete. The cement has been replaced by waste eggshells ash accordingly in the range of1% and 2.5%. The eggshell ash passing the 90μm sieve was used in the investigation. By using 1% and 2.5% amount of the waste eggshells ash, water cement ratio were designed which is 0.47, 0.55 and 0.70 and compared in terms of slump and strength with the conventional concrete. The concrete specimens were tested in the series of compression test to determine the strength of concrete for 3, 7 and 28 days. As a result, the additional of eggshells ash to the concrete mix increase the strength of the concrete. In short, the higher percentage of eggshells ash in the mix means a higher compressive strength for the concrete. Hence, it is suggested that eggshells ash can be used as partially cement replacement in concrete.

Abstract

Cement which is the main ingredient in making concrete contains non-renewable natural ingredients, potassium silicate. This causes an increase in cement prices every year. In overcoming these problems, there needs to be a modification in concrete mixes that are more environmentally friendly. Mixtures that are able to reduce the need for cement and contain potassium silicate such as charcoal are selected in modified concrete mix material by reviewing compressive strength. The purpose of this study was to determine how much influence the composition of charcoal as a substitute for cement in the preparation of concrete material was observed from compressive strength. The composition of the cement mixture will be replaced with charcoal by 0%, 5% and 10% with concrete compressive strength which is expected to have K200 quality. The research method uses an experimental method for sampling data. There are 3 (three) specimens in each percentage of addition of charcoal. The results of concrete compressive strength with a concrete age of 7 days, 22 days and 28 days under normal conditions without mixture are 31 Mpa, 35 Mpa, and 38 Mpa. The compressive strength of concrete mixed with charcoal as much as 5% is 30 Mpa, 31 Mpa, 36 Mpa. In 10% charcoal mixed concrete is 20 MPa, 27 MPa, and 29 MPa. The results of the compressive strength of the three conditions each showed a decrease in the trend of concrete age 7 days, 21 days and 28 days. Even though the trend has decreased, the compressive strength of the concrete produced still meets K200. This shows that charcoal ash can be used as an alternative to a partial replacement of cement in the concrete mixture for K200 concrete quality.

Abstrak

Semen yang merupakan bahan utama pembuatan beton mengandung bahan dasar alam yang tidak dapat diperbarui yaitu kalium silikat. In the paper it was decided to recognize the material characteristics of concrete based on ceramic aggregate, aluminous cement with the addition of zeolite (5%, 10%, 15%) and air entraining admixture. Aggregate crushed to 2 fractions was used for designing the concrete mix : 0-4 mm, and 4-8 mm. The research involved the use of clinoptilolite derived from the zeolite tuff deposit at Sokyrnytsya (Transcarpathia, Ukraine). The dominant component in the zeolite is clinoptilolite in an amount of about 75%. The research carried out by the authors showed that the addition of zeolite, among others, increases the compressive strength of concrete, significantly improves the frost resistance, which in the case of using only aluminous cement is very low. The obtained results confirm the possibility of using the above-mentioned components, which improve the concrete material properties and are environmentally friendly.

Water-cement (w/c) ratio is an important parameter in concrete mix ratio design, which also plays an important influence on concrete sulfate corrosion rate. In this paper, concrete cubic specimens with w/c of ratio as 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 were fabricated, respectively, and put into 10% Na2SO4 solution and tap water for 240 days. During the submerging process, superficial corrosion phenomena were observed and concrete cubic strengths were measured periodically. The results showed that the lower the w/c ratio, the stronger the concrete sulfate corrosion resistance is. At the same time, concrete with lower w/c ratio always correspond smaller corrosion layer thickness. Based on the degradation of cubic compressive strength of corroded concrete specimens, the development models of corrosion thickness of each w/c ratio concrete are established as sulfate corrosion goes on

The suitability of burnt and crushed cow bones (BCCB) as partial replacement for fine aggregate in concrete was studied. The percentages of replacements of fine aggregates of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50%, respectively of BCCB were tested considering 1: 2: 4 and 1: 11/2 :3 concrete mix ratios. The cow bones were burnt for 50 minutes up to 92oC before being crushed. Ninety-six (96) concrete cubes of 1: 2: 4 mix ratio and ninety-six (96) concrete cubes of 1 : : 3 mix ratio measuring 150x150x150mm were tested for the compressive strength at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days respectively. The research revealed that the BCCB acted as a retarder in the concrete. Water-cement ratio increased with the increase in the percentage of the BCCB. The mixes of 1:2:4 and 1::3 at 28 days curing yielded average compressive strengths in N/mm2 ranging from 16.49 - 24.29 and 18.71 - 29.73, respectively. For the mix ratios of 1:2:4 and 1:: 3 at 28 days curing age, it was observed that increase in the BCCB content beyond 40 and 50%, respectively resulted to the reduction of the average compressive strength below recommended minimum strength for use of concrete in structural works.http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v36i3.4

The experiment studies how the freeze-thaw cycles influence concrete compressive strength and elasticity modulus with different water-cement ratio under the air-entraining agent and zero of that value respectively. It can be found that modulus of elasticity and compressive strength of the concrete specimen reduced significantly when there is air-entraining agent; the durability of freeze-thaw resistance, however, makes great improvement; as the cement increases, both of them improves effectively. Through the comparison of concrete compressive strength and elastic modulus with different water-cement ratio and air-entraining agent, the optimal water-cement ratio and air-entraining agent were determined. The results of experiment can be used in concrete engineering design in severe cold area.
