This research was aimed to find out the types of politeness strategy that is used by 10th grade students to express criticism towards public issues through an anecdote text as well as the implication on the teaching and learning process of anecdote text in SMK TI Bali Global Jimbaran. There were fifteen anecdote texts analyzed in this research and they were collected through a writing test conducted in a 10th grade class in SMK TI Bali Global Jimbaran. The data were classified and analyzed based on the politeness strategy theory proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) and ethnography of communication theory proposed by Hymes (1973). The result of the analysis shows that from the fifteen anecdote texts collected, there were only two types of politeness strategy found to be used in expressing criticism, they are bald on record strategy and off record strategy. There are ten anecdote texts composed by the students found using bald on record strategy, while the other five anecdotes using off record strategy in expressing criticism towards public issues. In other words, more students still used the more risky way of expressing criticisms, therefore it is important for the teacher to choose or design a better model of learning which can improve the students’ pragmatic competence.

Naming or indexing of a radical in a dictionary will foreground dominant meanings of a radical and, at the same time, marginalize the other meanings of a radical as well as the meanings of non-radical components in a character. More efforts should be made to go beyond the dominant meaning(s) of a radical to have a better knowledge of the marginalized meanings of a radical and to identify the meanings of non-radical components in a character. With the assistance of Oracle/Bone Script, Bronze Script, and Seal script, and reinstatement of the significance of the marginalized meaning(s) of radicals or non-radical components, the Chinese character teaching and learning process will be considerably improved and it will become a fun-generating experience.

Considering the opportunity of reconstruction of ideas is very important for success in the learning process. For this purpose, a metavisual strategy was used, comparing images, one made by the students and the other presented by the researcher so they could compare and be able to rebuild their ideas, the latter an image based on a scientific accepted model. The research focus was the comprehension of the symbolic level by the learners while studying two electrochemical interactions by comparing images and rethinking about them. Thirty-two high school students, organized in pairs, participated in the research carrying out a proposed teaching and learning sequence (TLS) in the classroom. First, the students proposed hypotheses and then they had the opportunity to rethink about them modeling their learning. Students were filmed and the transcriptions and registers made by them were analyzed later. The results indicate a qualitative and progressive improvement in the learning of the subject when using the metavisual strategy, bringing evidence that it can be efficient to build and rebuild initial concepts in electrochemistry. Key words: electrochemical teaching, metacognition, metavisualization, metavisual strategy, modeling.
